Janet Jackson: The Sales Numbers, and Why They Don’t Matter

0

I had a lot of static over my Janet Jackson story this week. Her single, “No Sleeep,” isn’t selling and is getting so so radio play. I said it, and everyone went crazy. But her situation is no different than that of every artist over 40 or who’s associated with the 1990s. That’s the way it is. Generations change. Even Bruce Springsteen can’t get his new tracks played on rock stations. They just want “Born to Run.”

So far, according to Nielsen Sound Connect, “No Sleeep” has sold 59,000 copies — that’s paid downloads. When you factor in paid streams, the number is 76,000. This is the equivalent of nada. Here, from Hitsdaildouble, are the sales figures for the top 10 last week:

Selena Gomez f/A$AP Rocky, “Good for You” – 179k
OMI, “Cheerleader” – 175k
Taylor Swift f/Kendrick Lamar, “Bad Blood” – 147k
Rachel Platten, “Fight Song” – 136k
The Weeknd, “Can’t Feel My Face” – 116k
Andy Grammer, “Honey I’m Good” – 101k
Wiz Khalifa f/Charlie Pluth, “See You Again” – 98k
Silento, “Watch Me” – 97k
Walk the Moon, “Shut Up + Dance” – 92k
Major Lazer f/MØ & DJ Snake, “Lean On” – 84k

You get the picture. “No Sleep” does have well over 2 million views on YouTube. But that’s all free. No one is paid. No one paid for it. So yes, Janet is popular, but hopefully that translates into ticket sales at concerts. The single is a loss leader. There may be a break out track on the new album that does better.

As for radio play, “No Sleeep” appears on only one chart– Urban AC. That’s like R&B soft rock. It’s a niche. She’s not on any mainstream cross over chart.

This is not BMG’s fault, or Janet’s. It’s just the business. It’s just Chinatown. And the numbers don’t matter. It’s all about her tour.

Music: Neil Young Still on Spotify, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour Makes Album Based on Most Annoying Sound in World

0

NEIL YOUNG announced yesterday that he was “done” with streaming and was taking his music off of all streaming services. He said the sound was bad. We know Neil likes hi end sound since he has his Pono music player and Pono Music Service.

Still, I don’t know what he’s after. I’ve been listening to him on Spotify and it sounds fine. The fact is, Spotify and all that is made for transient listening– the computer, the car, the beach. It’s like a transistor radio. If you want great sound, go to a STEREO system with an amp and nice speakers.

Anyway, it’s 24 hours later and Neil is still on Spotify. Nothing has changed. Unlike Prince, who took everything down, Neil may not be finding it so easy. And you know what? His “Monsanto Years” sounds pretty good on Spotify…

DAVID GILMOUR of Pink Floyd has announced a new album coming called “Rattle that Lock” in September. His inspiration is the most annoying sound in the world– the three note alert that’s played in French rail stations over the loudspeakers every few minutes. To me it always sounded like a version of the “Close Encounters” alien signal. Dave says when he heard it at the Aix en Provence train station it made him want to dance. Isn’t creativity weird? So he’s made a whole album based on this horrid sound, and I’m sure it will be a hit. But I won’t be able to listen to it. That sound makes me anxious that I’m missing a train…

Mission: Possible– HBO Putting Scientology Doc “Going Clear” Back into Theaters

0

Cue the Lalo Schifrin music. HBO is taking on Tom Cruise in a big way. They’re re-releasing “Going Clear,” Alex Gibney’s Scientology documentary. They’re putting it back into theaters on September 25th, just as “Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation” fades from theaters. Or, “MI5” may still be in some theaters.

“Going Clear” fully chronicles Tom Cruise’s crazy alliance and membership in the religious cult. It’s a ballsy move. HBO is owned by Warner Bros. As I’ve said before, this makes the possibility of Tom working at that studio again ever so slight.

Certainly, though, HBO and WB see what’s happening: Leah Remini is everywhere talking about insider stuff at Scientology, Kirstie Alley is being sued, John Travolta may wind up in court soon, too. Cult leader David Miscavige’s father is writing a tell all book. So why not jump back in?

Happy 90th Birthday, Oscar Winner DA Pennebaker, Father of Cinema Verite

0

DA Pennebaker (Donn Alan) turns 90 years young today. He’s the survivor member of the gang that created cinema verite– Richard Leacock, Al Maysles, Bob Drew were his accomplices. Penny– as he is known– took a home a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award two years ago in the Documentary category. His landmark films include “Don’t Look Back” and “Monterey Pop,” several important political docs including “Primary.” With his filmmaker wife Chris Hegedus and producer son Frazer Pennebaker, Penny’s other achievements include the Oscar nominated “The War Room,” as well as a film I made with them in 2002 called “Only the Strong Survive.” Penny’s fans include Michael Moore, Richard Linklater, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and so on. He’s been a great friend and mentor to me, a guiding light for so many, and we thank him and celebrate him today!

Neil Young Pulls His Music From Streaming Services: “It’s Not Because of the Money”

0

Neil Young is pulling off his music off of streaming services, presumably all of them including Spotify and Apple Music. He says it’s not about the money, but it’s about the money. He joins Prince in this endeavor.

Just a note: Taylor Swift is still not on Spotify. But joining AppleMusic has given her about 50,000 extra sales in the last three weeks. Just sayin’…

The older artists have little leverage renegotiating royalty deals. It’s a shame. The streaming services will only cave to Swift and maybe one or two top names besides the Beatles– who btw are still on on Apple Music.

PS His catalog is still on Spotify at 1:04pm.

Neil’s post:
Streaming has ended for me. I hope this is ok for my fans.

It’s not because of the money, although my share (like all the other artists) was dramatically reduced by bad deals made without my consent.

It’s about sound quality. I don’t need my music to be devalued by the worst quality in the history of broadcasting or any other form of distribution. I don’t feel right allowing this to be sold to my fans. It’s bad for my music.

For me, It’s about making and distributing music people can really hear and feel. I stand for that.

When the quality is back, I’ll give it another look. Never say never.

Kennedy Center Goes Pop with the Eagles, Carole King, George Lucas, Seiji Ozawa, Cicely Tyson, Rita Moreno

0

The new Kennedy Center Honors show will be more rock and pop, and pitched to the release of the new “Star Wars” movie.

David Rubenstein, who kicked out the founding producers last year, wanted to jazz up the show for better ratings and more entertainment. It’s a bag of mixed results.

Rubenstein has three music inductees– The Eagles, Carole King, and long time Boston Symphony Orchestra conductor Seiji Ozawa. The latter means there will be a little bit of classical music.

But the show is pitched to pop with The Eagles– The Eagles, unbelievable– and Carole King. By picking two pop acts, Rubenstein forgoes any other fine arts representative from dance, jazz, opera, etc.

Then they throw in George Lucas, who should have gotten in a long time ago. This is a tie in with the new “Star Wars” movie. So you can count on Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, wookies, etc to be on stage.

Cicely Tyson is in, after missing the cut forever. She’s 90 years old, looks 70, and just won a Tony Award a couple of years ago. Everyone loves her. She’s overdue.

The final choice is Rita Moreno. They skipped over Jane Fonda and a bunch of really active Oscar winners for Moreno. The winner of an Emmy, Oscar, Grammy and Tony is a lovely woman, but kind of an uninspired choice. But this may have been a push from the older committee members reacting to the Eagles.

The Eagles? Good god.

Well, this is how it was going to be once Rubenstein ousted George Stevens, Jr. after 37 years.

Exclusive: Clint Eastwood Makes Surprise Appearance At Warner Bros’ New Studio Tour Debut

0

Clint Eastwood made Warner Brothers executives’ night, last night as he made an impromptu appearance at the kick off at unveiling of the new 25,000 sq. ft., expansion for the Warner Bros. Studio Tour: ‘Stage 48: Script To Screen.’

Clint casually sauntered in at the beginning, skipping the red carpet, going through the door and literally surprising everyone. This ageless icon came by himself, and casually strolled in, dressed in a polo shirt, slacks and sneakers, much to the delighted aghast of all. An insider told me that no one knew he was on the lot prepping for his upcoming hero pilot Sully Sullenberger film, starring Tom Hanks as Sully. He was told about the opening and he wanted to see it.

Eastwood was quickly was surrounded by excited executives and given a tour. Clint, whose scripts, memorabilia and more is featured throughout the tour, signed a long-term pact with the Studio in 1975.

I managed to ask him what he thought of it all, and true to Clint, who seemed transfixed and impressed uttered, “fantastic, the whole thing is impressive.” Besides all things Clint, the original ‘Friends’ set is there; you can act out a scene, the Batpod from “The Dark Knight,” the space capsule from “Gravity,” the Exosuit from ‘Edge Of Tomorrow,’ and so much more. Clint is right, it’s all really fun. I tried all the photo opportunities, flying on the broom out of ‘Harry Potter,’ the ramped up motorcycle in ‘Batman,’ and a space suit from ‘Gravity.’ Clint however, skipped all that but just looked on with bemusement. Doesn’t get much cooler than him.

Amy Schumer Talks Dirty at the Apple Store, But Waits til Child is Removed

0

Amy Schumer turned up at the Apple Store in SoHo the other day for a Q&A to promote her film “Trainwreck,” directed by Judd Apatow. Schumer plays a committment-phobe Manhattan career woman who as a young girl was taught by her father (Colin Quinn) that “monogamy is bad,” so she movies quickly from one guy to the next. It was standing room only and Schumer, who is 34, talked about her onscreen character, and pointed out similarities and differences between them.

The talk gets a little raunchy, so be prepared.

Schumer, whose material often comes from a lot of real-life experiences, was asked about her best maneuver for getting out of a bad date:

“Okay, well, like this wasn’t a date,” she said, “but one time I was with this guy, who was uncircumcised…Like no offense, you guys, but I never dealt with that before. He did not give me a heads up, so – no pun intended – so I just like saw it and it wasn’t well kept. I told him, ‘And by the way, you know what? I really, I just realized I’m not over my ex-boyfriend.’ Like I just made up an excuse.”

“That night I had a complicated shirt on, and so I’m laughing because I can’t get my f–king shirt on, just getting redressed, and I was just laughing because it was such a horrible excuse…So that’s like a date right?”

She added, “I talked about it on stage at some point. Yeah, I hope he didn’t see it. He was French, so maybe he didn’t see it. I guess they don’t do that here, but I’m a Long Island Jew. Everybody’s had a bris where I’m from. Thank God!”

Where did she find the courage to be so damn funny, a young woman asked?

“Just ignorance. I don’t know, I think something’s wrong with me. I’ve always been an asshole…Thank you for your question.”

What differentiates a successful actor from one who is less successful, someone asked?

“I think the non-working actor is still playing with hope. They’ll be happy once they get work and their parents will be proud of them. Whereas, the working actor is a little less happy because their hope is gone.”

Schumer was asked about writing a character who had a lot sex and was not judged for it. But she noticed a child listening to what was about to be extremely inappropriate humor: “There’s a kid here. Do you want like maybe to wear earmuffs? I’m just recommending that to you. I don’t know where your parents are…”

Child removed, she spoke:

“With my stand up I’ll talk about sex a lot. It’s just because it’s funny, not because I’m having so much of it. I’ve mainly been in long relationships… No one’s ever come on my face. I’m just saying those things. I like broaching those subjects. People are just like, ‘Oh she’s the sex girl. She’s a whore.’ I just want to talk about it, so I think I’m really proud of what we were able to do with this movie because I think you learn a lot about someone rather than just this snap judgment. You’re like, ‘Oh, this where she’s coming from and this is what’s going on with her,’ so I hope people leave it a little less ready to judge a woman who’s sexually active outside of wedlock, or in order to conceive a child.”

From having self esteem issues, how did she turn into a bad-ass confident chick she is now a young woman asked:

“It’s a mixture of not caring anymore, you know, it’s just you just really realize that everyone hates themselves, everyone worthwhile hates themselves and understanding that we’re all having a tough time and that there’s ups and downs and I think. I also think, (back in) 2007 when I was doing Last Comic Standing and Facebook just became a thing, people were really chiming in on whether or not they would have sex with me. and it was around then. Some people you’ll totally you’re going to be their thing, you’re a fucking goddess, and then other people think you’re totally vile and said, ‘I can’t believe anyone’s ever been inside you.’ They’re both right…And sometimes it didn’t matter. It feels so good to fucking be yourself and to throw people out of your life that don’t let you be yourself.”

One person clapped.

“Thank you. That was my publicist.”

“And also realizing that the guy for me, like the guy who wants to be with a perfect girl, is not a possibility… So it’s like, this is how it’s going to be. I don’t want to be hungry. I ate several scones today and the right person will think that’s really great.”

Jennifer Lawrence: First Trailer for “Joy” Shows She’s Back in the Oscar Race

0

Jeez Louise. David O. Russell has released the first trailer for “Joy.” And guess what? Jennifer Lawrence already has that Oscar look in her eye. The movie reunites Russell, Lawrence and Bradley Cooper for their third movie. This is an unbeatable team. PS Curious about the remixed version of the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”
