RIP: Actor Miguel Ferrer of “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “Twin Peaks,” And Son of Hollywood Royalty

0

George Clooney writes of the passing of his first cousin Miguel Ferrer: “Today history will mark giant changes in our world, and lost to most will be that on the same day Miguel Ferrer lost his battle to throat cancer.  But not lost to his family. Miguel made the world brighter and funnier and his passing is felt so deeply in our family that events of the day, (monumental  events), pale in comparison.
We love you Miguel.
We always will. “

Miguel Ferrer, well liked actor from “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “Twin Peaks,” has died at the age of 61 from cancer. He was part of Hollywood royalty, the son of the late Oscar winner Jose Ferrer and the amazing singer Rosemary Clooney. George Clooney was first cousin and singer Debby Boone (Daughter of Pat Boone) was his sister-in-law.

I think I met Miguel Ferrer a couple of times and he was always very gracious. He really first came to prominence in the original “Twin Peaks” series in 1990 as Agent Albert Rosenfield. Droll is the best way to describe Miguel Ferrer, and he played off David Duchovny, Kyle MacLachlan and David Lynch on screen beautifully. After that he just worked and worked and worked on tons of TV shows, and it was always great to see him. Ferrer Tweeted last summer about the new episodes: “Happy they released the large and impressive Twin Peaks cast list. So honored and proud to be a part of it.”

Lately Ferrer had been on “NCIS: Los Angeles.” But fans had noticed he was slurring his words in recent episodes. There was talk that he’d had a stroke as well. On last week’s show, he was killed off. I guess the producers knew how had his illness. But Ferrer’s illness must have progressed quickly. Back in July he Tweeted about “NCIS”: “Middle of shooting 802. Starting off as the best season yet by far. Stories and action second to none. Some damn good acting too.”

Jill Hennessy, who starred with him in “Crossing Jordan,” just Tweeted: “Can’t believe this gut-punch…just heard @Miguel_J_Ferrer passed..loved that hilarious, brilliant dude. So much luv 2 his family. Unreal.”

There will be lots of Tweets and toasts from his friends and co-stars.  Condolences to his family.

Beatles: What the McCartney Lawsuit Includes and Excludes in 21 Pages of Songs

0

Paul McCartney’s lawsuit filed today in New York against Sony Music is pretty interesting for what songs it includes and excludes.

In all, there are 21 pages of songs. Some titles are different from what we knew them as, and a couple are downright missing.

For example, “Yesterday” is alternatively listed as “Scrambled Eggs.” That’s how it was originally registered.

But two songs aren’t there, unless they’re hiding under other names– “Give Peace a Chance” and “The Ballad of John and Yoko.”

Long considered “Lennon” songs, they may have been horse-traded with Yoko Ono for McCartney songs like “Maybe I’m Amazed” and the instrumental “Junk.”

Plus, McCartney is including the two hits he wrote for Peter and Gordon, “World Without Love” and “Woman.”

Thriller: Paul McCartney Sues to Get Back His Valuable Beatles Catalog from Sony Music After Michael Jackson Estate Sale

0

Paul McCartney is suing Sony Music Publishing to get back the 251 songs he wrote with John Lennon. This is just a short time after Sony bought up Michael Jackson’s share of their company. Jackson bought the Beatles catalog in 1987 and used it as his personal bank until the day he died. In 1995, he merged his own company with Sony’s then very small music publisher in exchange for desperately needed cash. Jackson was then settling personal lawsuits.

McCartney never forgave Jackson for buying the Beatles catalog behind his back. No matter what he says now, it was always a sticking point. At one point, McCartney, frustrated, wanted to reverse the songwriting credit so it read McCartney-Lennon on songs he wrote alone like “Yesterday.” For the last 30 years, the ownership of his own music has dogged McCartney.

According to copyright law, McCartney would be able to start getting back some of the songs as their status terminated, by filing notices. He was so keen on this that he started filing in 2008 for songs that would become available in 2018. But a similar case involving Duran Duran in the British courts was botched, and apparently McCartney and his lawyers– brother in law, John Eastman, and nephew Lee Eastman– didn’t want the same thing to happen to them. So they’ve made a pre-emptive strike against Sony by filing suit.

“For years following service of the first Termination Notices, Defendants gave no indication to Paul McCartney that they contested the efficacy of Paul McCartney’s Termination Notices,” reads the complaint. “Defendants’ affiliates did, however, oppose at least one other artist’s terminations of transfers under the terms of the 1976 Copyright Act.” That would be Duran Duran.

In heaven, Michael Jackson must be having a fit. The whole snatching of the Beatles catalog allowed him to carry on with abandon, spending money he didn’t have, borrowing millions, and living as if the future didn’t matter. The sale to Sony last year (the deal was only finalized this past September) was something he would have abhorred. But once again, Michael’s lawyer, John Branca, must have seen this train coming down the tracks. Branca cut a great for Michael’s kids, selling for a reported $750 million.

If Sony loses the Beatles catalog in 2018, the next question will be: who will administer it?  McCartney could administer his side of it through his MPL  company. (Lennon’s reps already made a deal for his side to stay with Sony.) Or another hungry publisher, like Universal, which sells McCartney, Lennon, and Beatles albums via its record company, could come calling.

It’s a long and winding road.

Matthew McConaughey Based His “Gold” Character on His Brother Named Rooster, And His Dad’s Pals “Who Didn’t Look in the Proverbial Mirror”

0

In “Gold,” Matthew McConaughey is snaggle-toothed, has a beer belly and a receding hairline. At last night’s premiere of “Gold” in New York, Gaghan told me the actor came up with the look for modern prospector Kenny Wells himself — which was inspired by his father and his business partners who sold materials in the oil business.

“His brother Rooster did the same thing,” said director Stephen Gaghan. (Yes Rooster is the name of McConaughey’s brother.) The director added, “Matthew came with a lot of insight in how the man would be, how he would talk, how he would walk, how he would dress.”

On the red carpet, McConaughey, who speaks in a thick Texan drawl, told me he started preparing and getting into Kenny Wells’ life for a while, eating as his character would, some of which involved cheeseburgers.

“I looked up into the mirror one day and noticed that I’d put on about 18 pounds, so like, ‘Well this is okay, that’s right.’ This is who Kenny Wells is, a consumer. Life, food, drink, smoke, everything! And then I looked back at my own life and the Kenny Wellses I’d met through my dad,” said McConaughey. “They were all large, physically almost larger than life. Kenny’s not fat. Kenny’s full. He’s a full man. When I say consuming, like they were all kind of heavy, burly and strong and they weren’t people who looked in the proverbial mirror. Most of them didn’t live past 60 years old either. Some of them died of heart attacks early because of their lifestyle.”

There were a few celebs in the mix last night other than the cast, an eclectic group that included Salman Rushdie, famed songwriter-performer Valerie Simpson, R&B star Freddie Jackson, and Tony winner Lena Hall. Oscar winner Paul Haggis brought six people who’d won an auction for his Haiti charity Artists for Peace and Justice. Haggis, an exec producer on “Gold,” had developed the script early on.

“Gold” co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Edgar Ramirez were stuffed into a corner of the Plaza Hotel’s Palm Court later for the after party, where Weinstein Company co-president Bob Weinstein held court literally. (This is his movie, from the Dimension side of the company.) Howard, who is finally ramping up her career, has a big blonde teased hair do as Wells’s girlfriend, a waitress. We thought it was a wig.

“It’s MY hair!” she shouted back over the din over disco music. “You should play an an all out floozy sometime,” I responded, impressed.

Bryce shot back a wide grin. “With a heart of gold!”

“Ocean’s 8” with Bullock, Blanchett Et Al Courting “Zoolander 2” Box Office Fashion Curse of Anna Wintour

0

Now comes news that “Ocean’s 8,” the all-female style “Ocean’s Eleven” is courting the fashion curse of Anna Winour and “Zoolander 2.”

You may recall that Wintour was heavily featured in “Zoolander 2,” and the New York fashion world– including real designers– was too big a part of that comedy.

The result was disaster on a huge scale. “Zoolander 2” made just $28.8 million domestically, and finished with $55 million worldwide. Paramount took a huge hit. Ben Stiller did, too. Talk about being sold a pig in a poke. By the time Stiller and Owen Wilson’s “Vogue” cover hit, “Zoolander 2” was dead.

Now “Ocean’s 8” is begging the same question. I just hope it isn’t digging the same grave. Wintour is once again front and center, along with her obnoxious Met Ball– a once classy event now overrun with PR freakery like the Kardashians.

According to reports, the “Ocean’s 8” producers have spent a fortune re-creating the Met Ball, including the K’s, and promising Wintour has possibly yet another speaking role.

Did they need this? They already a slew of stars like Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, and “surprise” appearances by Matt Damon and maybe George Clooney. I’m nervous this turning into “Ocean’s Twelve,” a smug celebrity back pat and not a plot and character driven adventure. The Met Ball thing is certainly a turn off to the male audience, who will not care about the publicity that Wintour and the Kardashians churn up on shows like “Extra!”

50 Years After Sgt. Pepper, Beatles Paul and Ringo Are Back on Artist Peter Blake’s Canvas

0

Believe it or not, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” the greatest album of all time, turns 50 on June 2nd in the US (June 1st in the UK.) The very famous cover was made by artist Peter Blake. It’s probably the most parodied cover in rock history.

Now Blake has sent himself up with a 2017 edition mural to cover the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in London during renovations. The massive blow up features celebrities who regularly stay in the hotel from Sigourney Weaver and Morgan Freeman to David Oyelowo and Dame Edna.

But look who else made the cut– Sir Paul McCartney and Lord Ringo Starr, the surviving Beatles. In fact, if you look closely, Ringo really got a nice spot in the center on the front panel. Paul’s portrait, which is larger, appears on the side panel. This is as close as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band can come to getting back together again.

There are 100 celebs on the mural, and it’s an eclectic group that also features Jane Seymour and Helen Mirren. See how many others you can ID.

Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton Set to Give Lily Tomlin SAG Life Achievement Award

0

There are few more enduring relationships than the cast of 1982’s “9 to 5.” Stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton have remained good friends for the 37 years since that hit comedy opened and became a classic.

Now Fonda and Parton will present Tomlin with her SAG Life Achievement Award on January 29th. That should be quite the ceremony as the trio relive their “9 to 5” success.

But also, it’s pretty cool because Fonda and Tomlin are each nominated for SAG Awards for Best Actress in a Comedy for their Netflix series, “Grace and Frankie.” The hit show is going into its 3rd season with no end in sight.

Parton has also stayed very busy with new albums and Hallmark TV movies. These women– all over 70–Parton turns 71 on Thursday– never ever stop. And we’re pretty happy about that.

Exclusive: Will Smith and Jada Pinkett $150,000 Nation of Islam 2015 Donation Verified

0

EXCLUSIVE We always worried about Will Smith and Jada Pinkett’s flirtation with Scientology. For several years they underwrote their own private school in Calabasas, California that incorporated Scientology curriculum. They often gave money to Scientology organizations through their 501c3 tax free foundation.

But now they have a new cause. In 2015, according to federal tax forms, the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation made possibly its largest donation ever: to the Nation of Islam. The 2015 Form 990 shows a donation to Muhammad’s Holy Temple of Islam, Chicago, for $150,000.  The Holy Temple of Islam is a dba for Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam.

Farrakhan had Tweeted news of the donation back in September 2015. He wrote: Last night in Philadelphia, The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan announced that he called upon Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith to support 10-10-15. And he said the couple happily donated $150,000 to offset the cost of hosting the upcoming historic gathering! Will Smith attended the Million Man March in 1995.” But the gift was not officially verified until now.

The gift to NOI represents about a fourth of their total donations for 2015, which came to $680,983. That’s the most the Smiths– who average around a half a million dollars a year in charitable giving– have ever disbursed. The Southern Poverty Law Center has listed the NOI as a Black Separatist hate group, anti-Semitic, racist and anti-gay.

The NOI donation is also three times their highest donation in 2015. They gave $50,000 each to the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking, the Runa Foundation (a group that helps the rainforests), and Youth Speaks, in San Francisco.

The foundation lists only one paid officer, Karen Evans, of Baltimore, who received $95,000 in compensation and benefits. She’s the aunt of Jada Pinkett Smith.

Bruce Springsteen Cover Band Leaves New Jersey Inaugural Ball Gig Dancing in the Dark

0

The B Street Band, a Bruce Springsteen cover gig, has dropped out of the New Jersey Inaugural Ball. The Jersey Republicans will be dancing in the dark this Friday. Originally the band- — a riff on Bruce’s E Street Band– said they’d signed a contract before the election. But then when Trump won they came under criticism, notably because Bruce and much of the band do not support Trump or his crazy ideas. B Street probably faced canceled bookings because of it, not to mention Springsteen’s ire. He and members of the band have occasionally shown up and joined in with them.

Here’s the statement:

To our most loyal fans and to Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street band community

With deepest apologies to our fans and the New Jersey Inaugural Ball committee, the B Street Band is withdrawing from performing at this year’s inauguration Gala.
Our decision is based SOLELY on the respect and gratitude we have for Bruce and the E Street Band.
Bruce’s music has been the foundation of our livelihood. The B street Band would not exist without the talents of Bruce and our E Street brothers.
We are most grateful to these rock legends and look forward to many more years of emulating and performing the Forever Music, of Bruce Springsteen.

Box Office Dump: “Silence” is Not Golden, “Monster Trucks,” “Monster Calls” Are Monster Flops

0

The January box office dump is in full swing.

Both “Monster Calls” and “Monster Trucks” are monster flops. And Martin Scorsese’s “Silence” is a huge disappointment, and a marketing disaster.

“Silence” was so late that Paramount probably should have done what they did with “Wolf of Wall Street”– waited out the Oscar window, taken the film to Cannes or Venice, and then come in next fall for 2018 Oscars. There was no time to build a consensus, explain what was happening, or what the film was about. The result i that a real masterpiece has been dumped, with no awards and no audience. It’s always easy to say these things in hindsight, but boy– what a wasted opportunity!

Meanwhile, Paramount — which has good hits with “Arrival” and “Fences” — had to dump “Monster Trucks.” A $10.5 million weekend for a $150 million project is mind bending.

Just a note about “Arrival”– here’s a case where Paramount played it like a Stradivarius. Early fall build up from festivals, lots of screenings, everyone was available. The outside publicist, Julie Tustin, just kept at it. And the payoff is $100 million box office, plenty of nominations and accolades. If they’d tried to force it in right before Christmas, “Arrival” never would have made it.

Warner Bros. is also taking a big hit this weekend. Ben Affleck’s “Live by Night” is dead. We saw this film before Christmas and knew it was a big ol flop but we weren’t allowed to say anything. Sienna Miller is the only highlight here, and she’s not really in it. Also, remember, Ben talked to Lindsay Lohan about playing that part back when she was in rehab. Anyway, you’ll see this on an airplane and think, What is this?

Focus has a huge disaster with “A Monster Calls.” It’s funny, too, because they have excellent reviews. But as with most well reviewed Focus Films, there’s no marketing or publicity. Focus has a new marketing chief who might be able to reverse their trend. I hope so. “Nocturnal Animals” was so good, and it all went south. “Loving” made not a dent.

A hit: Peter Berg’s “Patriots Day.” I didn’t like that it became a documentary at the end– that should have been a separate film. But it works on a direct level. And nice work from everyone. Plus, they tell the story from the terrorist’s POV, which makes the film a lot more engaging than it might have been.

PS A24 should put some money into “20th Century Women.” What a shame to let this evaporate. And Amazon should give a little more elbow grease to “Manchester.” Worth it!
