ABBA, Disbanded 40 Years Ago, Gets Major Grammy Nods for New Album That Didn’t Sell

ABBA broke up in 1982. Their hits lived on, but they disappeared.

Last year they released a reunion album called “Voyage.” It was met with indifference and sold around 212,000 copies in the US according to Luminate. It was a bad album with no hits. It disappeared quickly.

Today, “Voyage” received three major Grammy nominations including Album of the Year, Pop Vocal for a Group, and Record of the Year.

What the heck? Kudos to their marketing team. They resurrected the dead, literally.

If anything, ABBA could have turned up in Traditional Pop or something. It’s unheard of for legacy acts with great albums — see Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and dozens more — to make it into the contemporary categories. So however ABBA pulled this off, bravo.

“Yellowstone” Returns with a Roar: 20 Million People Watched Over 14 Channels Sunday Night

“Yellowstone” came back Sunday night for Season 5, and it was a hit with a capital H.

Over 20 million people watched over 14 different Viacom channels on Sunday night. The main channel, Paramount Network, garnered 9.4 million viewers at 8pm. At 9:14pm, 8.4 million either stayed or tuned in for a second showing.

In addition to those two, 12 other Viacom channels showed the premiere. The total comes more or less to 20 million. So people really wanted to see this show. They watched it on MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, all really odd places. But it helps to have a monopoly on cable channels.

So the fix is in as they say. The show’s fans are going to watch this season in the millions. But questions linger about Kevin Costner, whether he’s gotten all he can get from it and wants out. There’s a lot of speculation. Can “Yellowstone” survive without John Dutton? That will be the season cliffhanger, for sure

For some reason, the Grammys have resurrected ABBA’s “Voyage” album for Album of the Year. It didn’t sell, wasn’t good, and basically forgotten. Go figure.

Other nominees for Album of the Year include Beyonce, Adele, Coldplay, Bad Bunny, Brandi Carlile, Lizzo, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar.

Some bright spots: Elvis Costello for Best Rock Album for “The Boy Named If.” Sting and Shaggy were nominated for Best Reggae Album for their album of Sinatra gone reggae “Come Fly Wid Me.” They’re each terrific and deserve it.

A lot of albums were snubbed. But a lot weren’t. Full list coming.

2023 Grammy Nominations: Complete List Including Two We Suggested– for Elvis Costello, and for Judy Collins

There are some weird nominees and some which I approve of. In the latter, I wrote on November 2nd that we’d like to see nods for Judy Collins’ album “Spellbound” and Elvis Costello’s “The Boy Named If.” And so it happened! (Judy is in folk, Elvis is in traditional rock.)

But ABBA? Really? No one bought the album, radio ignored it, and it wasn’t very good.

Among Song of the Year: only one song had a single songwriter: “Just Like That” by Bonnie Raitt. She should win without fail. (But you know she’ll lose to one of those teams!)

I would probably give Album of the Year to Lizzo or to Bad Bunny. Nothing against the others, but it’s time for a fresh look at this category.

“Black Panther” Sequel “Wakanda Forever” Cools Down Considerably in Monday Box Office After Huge Weekend

Is Wakanda Forever or is it fleeting?

After a mammoth first weekend, “Wakanda Forever,” the sequel to “Black Panther,” slowed down considerably on Monday.

The Monday box office was a respectable $11 million — believe me, any movie would be happy to have that number.

But Exhibitor Relations points that after a $181 million weekend, the 72% drop is a surprise. It’s much less than Mondays for this year’s previous Marvel releases, “Thor Love and Thunder” and “Dr. Strange 2.”

What does it mean besides kids were doing their homework? Word of mouth may not be so enthusiastic after the first wave saw the movie and realized that the Black Panther was really dead and so was Queen Ramonda. And Killmonger’s pop up seemed slack to say the least.

Bruce Springsteen Starts 3 Day Run on “Tonight Show,” Calls out Great R&B Singers, Says Wife Patti Will Never Be Called “Grandma”

Bruce Springsteen started his three day run on Fallon last night. He had a great talk with Jimmy, calling out Sam Moore of Sam & Dave, and the late Sam Cooke as his inspirations.

We also learned that Bruce’s wife Patti Scialfa will not be called “Grandma” by their first grandchild. And Bruce doesn’t want to be called “The Boss,” he joked.

Bruce had no less than eight backup singers with him. Two of them are quite famous– Vaneese Thomas and Fonzie Thornton. Vaneese is the daughter of legend Rufus Thomas and sister of Stax star Carla Thomas, Fonzie sang with Luther Vandross and Aretha Franklin. They are the creme de la creme.

The big mystery at the LA premiere of Netflix’s sequel murder mystery “Glass Onion; A Knives Out Mystery” last night: where was star Daniel Craig, aka Benoit Blanc?

Director Rian Johnson explained to the crowd at the Academy Museum that Craig was “heartbroken” but had come down “with a bug.” The massive cast — which includes Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr and Janelle Monae — had to carry on without their leader. (And you thought James Bond was impervious to all ailments!)

Stuber introduced director/writer Rian Johnson as a “filmmaker who continues to grow, continues to entertain and continues to deliver great part for his actors and great entertainment for you the audience.” Rian then thanked the packed house and brought out the all star cast. He noted, “There’s two people who are missing from here. up here. Dave Bautista who is shooting right now. And Daniel Craig — I’m wondering if we can record just a little video and say we all love you Daniel. Is everyone down for that?”

When the audience (which included Kate Hudson’s famous mom Goldie Hawn, “Game of Thrones” producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, and Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon) enthusiastically shouted ‘Yes,’ Johnson then instructed the audience, “everyone all together say, ‘we love you Daniel.’” Johnson ended with “this is insane right? Pretty crazy, just have fun.”

At the after party, Craig’s lovely daughter actress Ella Craig, who was with the powerhouse producer/actress Colleen Camp, told me that, “My dad has the flu. This is the first time in 10 years he’s missed something like this. He’s really upset about it.” But Daniel should know that the audience was loving the movie. The film played beautifully with raucous laughter from the crowd. With a clever script and terrific actors, “Glass Onion” is a dazzling and delightful whodunit.

“Glass Onion” will be in theaters on November 23rd, and will start streaming on Netflix Dec 23. 2022.

I don’t report on a lot of election news, but this is sweet. Kari Lake, who is quite crazy, has lost her bid for Governor in Arizona. The election has been called for Katie Hobbs.

This is another huge loss for Donald Trump and his MAGA Candidates. It’s a relief to know that they couldn’t get away with their plans to destroy the country. Hobbs played it smart. She just let Lake talk and talk but wouldn’t get into a debate with her.

Lake was among the more dangerous, stupid and annoying people running for office this year. She was just lampooned on SNL by Cecily Strong but seriously her ideas and plans would have sent Arizona into not just the Twilight Zone but another level of madness.

Now Arizona has a Democratic governor in Hobbs and a re-elected senator in Mark Kelly. The next election will be to remove Krysten Sinema, their Senator who claims to be a Democrat but has only worked against progress and mental health since she was elected.

The only real sticking point for in this election: the horror of Sarah Huckabee Sanders as governor of a state. Of course, it’s Arkansas, but still…I hope their Dem party can get it together to remove her in four years.

The Great Roberta Flack, 85, Announces ALS Diagnosis, But She’s Been Ill For Some Time

Today the manager of the great legend Roberta Flack announced the famed singer has been suffering from ALS, aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

This is not news to people who know her. Roberta has been very ill for a long time, and has been living in a very good facility where she’s getting top notch care.

I saw Roberta last April, and I’d seen her a couple of years earlier where you could see that she was battling the disease.

There have been few artists as talented as Roberta Flack. Her most famous hits are “Killing Me Softly with His Song” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” But her work with Donny Hathaway is superior in every way. Their self titled album, produced by Arif Mardin, should be on everyone’s playlist even now. That album includes their classic, “Where is the Love?” and their cover of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” — the best version of that song.

Roberta was already a respected jazz singer and pianist when she recorded “First Time.” When the album was released, it languished. Then jazz fan Clint Eastwood used the song in his movie, “Play Misty for Me,” and it took off like a rocket. You couldn’t turn on a radio in the 1970s without hearing Roberta’s sophisticated, soulful renderings.

So sending all good thoughts, prayers (which no one likes to say anymore) and lots of love to Roberta, and mainly thank you, for making the world sound a lot better.
