Home Celebrity Jerry Lewis: MDA Hosts Just Lie, and Tell Audience He Retired

UPDATE: The hosts of the MDA Telethon just lied to the audience and told them that Jerry Lewis had retired. Do they think the viewers live under a rock? Everyone knows that Lewis was ousted. I’m told that “American Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe is basically running the show. “It’s all Idol people backstage,” says a source. Lythgoe told the audience in opening remarks that Lewis told him he was retiring. This was echoed by the other hosts. Lewis must be seething, and with good reason. They made it sound like he’d died. Unbelievable.

  1. Another year without Jerry.I should say another rotten year with a terrible telethon.A great show reduced to a terrible show,is this what happens when you get old.I am 57,not that old.I cannot fathom what Jerry felt after all those years of dedication.A show thtvI always looked forward to and would till look forward to today.Everyone in the world is not 20 or 30 you know. The people that made this decision are terribly old and unappreciative people of all his hard work and true dedication. When he cried on tv he did so from his heart. If you think these 4 new hosts replaced him, forget it.That could never happen.Because of all his years of dedication he should have left when he wanted to.He is not a stupid man.He knows when he could no longer do it.He could have further reduced his time on the actual telethon, that could have been another option .Letting him continue in some capacity is called RESPECT,which the people at MDA do not have.I will not associate with them
Anymore after I have donated my whole life, because of what they did to Jerry.
If they don’t respect Jerry they don’t deserve my respect or my pledge. An absolutely awful way to tret people.

  2. I just want to say that I felt like a part of my life was taken away from me. Growing up the show was a big part of my summer. We used to collect door to door and head downtown to drop it to our local news station. We would wait up all night because my cuz was playing drums for Sammy Davis Jr. at 3am. It was tradition! Yes ….it was cut throat the way the said good bye to Jerry. Nobody understands more than Jerry the pollitics of show biz. I’m sure he told them to screw off! If there is one thing that really makes me angry …is that out of respect the name should always be…………………………

    The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon.

  3. What I find amazing is that Nigel Lithgow, a citizen of England has the gaul to sing American patriotic songs at the end of the telethon. I think he steam rolled the board into changing too much, too quickly and leaving Mr. Jerry Lewis out to dry. I think Jerry thought to heck with it, and left, and did he likely did not want a bs celebration of his time on the telethon this year, because he felt betrayed. This likely pissed Nigel Lithgow off, and snow balled he entire thing out of control. I will be looking at MDA’s 1099 report for this year, once it is available, as I have a feeling they called in every favor, and had some of their corporate friends donate personally, and not via the corporate structure to inflate the numbers this year. I cannot support any non profit/charity that treats people like crap, which is what the MDA did. My money will now go to Cancer research, Alzheimers, or one of the other many, many charities. God Bless Jerry Lewis, God is sad that the MDA treated him like crap.

  4. Jerry Lewis did so much for MDA…he was the voice of MDA….without him MDA would not be the orgainzation it is today!!!!I think Nigel is bigger in his own mind than he really is!!!!!Let’s see where MDA goes from here…it would be interesting to see the figures of support from the day Jerry was ousted to next year’s telethon. I would want to see the figures and not just from the lips of Nigel!!!!! Good luck but I will not support MDA any longer!!!!!

  5. SHAME ON YOU PEOPLE AT MDA. HE DEVOTED HALF HIS LIFE
TRYING TO FIND A CURE FOR ALL HIS KIDS..ITS TIME TO LOOK AT THESE BOARD MEMBERS AND REPLACE THEM… BY THE WAY WE ARE ALL GETTING OLDER …. NO MORE DONATIONS…………..

  6. This was the most dirty, low down thing done to a person of notoriety possible, just short of assassination. Whatever his faults were, Jerry made that organization what it was, and he raised billions for that cause, which benefitted the kids but also the well paid rats who stabbed Jerry in the back. The scoundrels at MDA have even removed Jerry from their website, and edited their message boards. Rats like that are not to be trusted.

  7. I think “corporate” america is getting ridiculous. Between the Union’s and special interest groups, real americans have no chance. The president does not run this country, politicians do and now they run the MDA telethon too. Jerry Lewis is what made the show so loved and watched. People appeared on the show because he was loved by all and everyone knew it was all about the kids for him.
We watched some this year and the whole show was boring and poorly run. Unless they bring Jerry Lewis back next year we will NEVER

  8. I gave because I know Jerry would want his kids to continue being helped.

After 41 yrs I was outplaced and I know how it feels. Jerry did a great job for all the years with MDA. Its a shame people can just throw people away for the all mighty dollar (or 33 cents, if it even worh that much)

  9. THE TELETHON WAS JERRY LEWIS! THE KIDS LOOKED AT HIM AS A HERO WHO WOULD ALWAYS BE THERE FOR THEM AS WELL AS ADULTS! HE GAVE THE EXTRA MILE, HE GAVE US THE TRUE SENSE THAT WHAT WAS BEING DONE WAS WHAT WE SHOULD DO! YOU WILL NOT GET THAT FROM THESE PEOPLE, TO THEM IT’S JUST A SHOW. JERRY WAS FROM THE HEART. MDA BIG WIGS SHOULD BE ASHAMED! I WILL SUPPORT THE KIDS BUT NOT MDA! I THINK WHAT THEY DID TO MR> LEWIS IS A DISGRACE!

  10. I will nolonger watch the telethon and my donations will be sent elsewhere
out of respect for Jerry Lewis… This was no way to trear Mr. Lewis….

  11. Mr. Lewis may or may not have a legitimate grievance, but the telethon was never about him but about the charity. Mr. Lewis should consider that and be magnanimous, saying “I hope each year’s fundraising is bigger than the last” until that glorious day when the cure is eventually found.

  12. My Brother died at 19 as a result of MD many years ago when the telethon was in it’s infantcy. Jerry himself would tell you that it’s not about him, it’s about the chilren that will die because of MD, it really IS all about the money. I don’t blame anyone for feeling disgusted at the way the organization treated Jerry, I feel the same way. Please consider support in another way because the lives of so many can be touched with just a little help from you all.

  13. Sadly, only a small portion of donations go to those needing help. Maybe in a twist of fate, this actually is a good thing for Lewis – Greed, etc. is taking over MDA. I never liked Lewis as an actor – except for his role in King of Comedy – but do respect his work w/ MDA. Maybe this is fate’s way of telling him to get clear of this corrupt organization.

  14. Too bad for MDA. With treatment like this for the guy that put them on the map, I don’t think I can support their cause any longer. It appears there are simply too many jerks in the mix and that is a real shame for the people who can benefit.

  15. Jerry Lewis originated the MDA Labor DAy Marathon fund raiser. — if it were not for Jerry Lewis, there would be NO Labor Day Marathon. Jerry LEWIS IS this marathon. I’m appalled at the way this is being handled. Mr. Lewis is an AMerican Icon — a well respected AMerican Icon — it is shameful and disgusting and disgraceful the way he is being treated — many people watch and GIVE just to honor Jerry Lewis. I doubt very seriously that MDA will benefit nearly as well as it has in previous years simply because of the way in which it has dishonored Mr. Jerry Lewis, AMerica’s most treasured comedian and supporter of those suffering from Muscular Dystrophy.
