Reality Bites: Rapper Snoop Dogg Takes a Job as an Executive with DefJam Records, Will Receive Paycheck, Benefits, 2 Week Vacation

Reality, as we all know, bites.

This is even true for Snoop Dogg, aka Calvin Broadus. The rapper known for being stoned all the time and appearing in commercials with Martha Stewart, is taking a 9 to 5 job. He’s going to be an exec with DefJam Records. Presumably he’ll get a paycheck and benefits.

What is forcing Snoop into dreary domestication? Snoop’s biggest record was “Doggystyle” in 1993. This year “Doggystyle” has so far sold 5,000 copies, roughly half of his total sales. There’s streaming money, but none of this is enough to underwrite his lifestyle. And there’s no touring for the last year. The pot isn’t free. Neither are the cars and everything else that makes Snoop a Dogg.

Snoop can currently be heard on a remix of “Peaches,” the Justin Bieber single, with Usher and Ludacris. “Peaches” is a big hit, but there are a lot of people who divide that peach pie. Even Justin Bieber may have to take a job soon!

PS Does Snoop know about the hour long lunch break, two week vacations, and Universal Music HR handbook? I know I’m not telling him.

Music News: Mariah Changes Management Looking for a Hit, Could Wind Up Singing the National Anthem at Citi Field

0

MARIAH CAREY is looking for a hit. Evidently, she wasn’t getting any help from her management company, Roc Nation. Her manager Melissa Ruderman jumped from Roc to Range Media in January. Now Mariah has followed. The UK Sun and Deadline.com suggested that Mariah had a falling out with Jay Z, who owns Roc. Mariah responded by saying she was proud of the number 1 single she had with Jay Z, called “Heartbreaker.”

Only: “Heartbreaker” was a hit in 1999. Mariah has not been able to muster a new hit in over a decade. Her only record that sells is “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Every November it takes off, and gives Mariah a new lease at number 1 for about a week.

But for people under 30, that’s all they know of Mariah. Can Range Media help her? They’re not really a music outfit. It seems an odd choice. Also, Range is owned by Point 72, the financial firm guided by Steve Cohen, owner of the Mets and survivor of a financial scandal with the SEC. He had to pay them $1.8 billion in fines as SAC Capital, Point 72’s previous name. I’m not sure Mariah understands she may soon be singing the national anthem at Mets games.

One story said Mariah wanted to an “R&B album,” whatever that means. What was she doing before? What Mariah should do is record an album of real songs, not deploying her high octave over yodeling. When she covered “Without You” and “I’ll Be There,” her audience responded. Her song, “Dreamlover,” is the only single in her carton of hits besides “Vision of Love” with a melody and a hook. Cover some cool R&B oldies not so well known, have some new ones crafted like Bruno Mars’ latest hit. That’s the only way Mariah will get on radio or back on the charts.

Hollywood: Nancy Davis’s Annual Race to Erase MS Gala Raises $1.4 Mil With a Drive-in at the Rose Bowl

0

Earth Wind & Fire definitely made the attendees at “Drive-In to Erase MS Gala” at the Rose Bowl this past Friday night, forget that COVID even happened. And Nancy Davis just doesn’t give up.

The combination proved a winning night, which raised $1.4 millions dollars help find a cure for multiple sclerosis.

Davis herself was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1991 at the age of 31. She started her foundation in 1993 and has used her platform for good ever since to raise awareness and funds. She is the intrepid daughter of the late Marvin Davis and the much admired, classiest woman in Hollywood Barbara Davis.

Will she ever stop? Nancy told us, “We got two more drugs this year, we have twenty-two now, all with FDA approval. We have such generous supporters that we were able to keep our research going, it’s kind of a miracle. But I’m not finishing until we find a cure, and we are going to find a cure, there is no doubt about it.”

Lance Bass kicked off the night followed by Nancy’s lovely daughters Isabella and Mariella Rickel. (Their dad and Nancy’s husband is respected entrepreneur Kenneth Rickel.) The girls gave their beloved Mom a heartwarming introduction.

Nancy then spoke of her history with MS and as she wrapped up, she thanked the guests and noted, “unfortunately, we can’t have everybody rush onto the stage like we usually do because of the CDC rules. But by next year, we’ll all be back!”

Stacy Bendet’s Alice + Olivia fashion show followed her, then the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” stars Dorit Kemsley, Kyle Richards, Kathy Hilton and Sutton Stracke started the auction. When Earth, Wind & Fire —  playing their first gig since the pandemic — played “Boogie Wonderland,”  the grateful crowd started to dance and didn’t stop.

The band followed with “Sing a Song,” “September,” “Lets Groove” “Shining Star,” and the event’s annual closing number, “Lean On Me,” where the lovely Siedah Garret, David Osmond, Greg Phillinganes and Nancy’s family, joined. As Nancy says, “I am so excited that we were able to have the breakout post COVID event where everybody got together and celebrated and felt so healthy and good, got out of their sweatsuits and celebrated finding a cure for MS!”

Bruce Springsteen Returning to Broadway Show June 26th for the Whole Summer! The Boss Coming to Save Broadway!

“I loved doing Springsteen on Broadway and I’m thrilled to have been asked to reprise the show as part of the reopening of Broadway.”

Bruce is coming back to save Broadway! And he’s playing the best Broadway house, the St. James Theater, previous host of “Hello, Dolly!” and “The Producers.” It’s a magical theater.

He’s returning June 26th with “Springsteen on Broadway” for the whole summer, and who knows, longer, probably! The first run came to 229 performances from Oct 12, 2017 to Dec 15, 2018.

Proceeds from Opening Night of Springsteen on Broadway at the St. James Theatre will be donated to a group of local New York and New Jersey charities including the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Food Bank for New York City, Fulfill (Monmouth & Ocean Counties Foodbank), Long Island Cares, NJ Pandemic Relief Fund and The Actor’s Fund.

After that, Bruce will clean up. He made gazillions during the show’s first run, and kept extending over and over. The house was always full.

“Kimmy Schmidt” Actress Ellie Kemper Posts Unnecessary Statement About Being Queen of 1999 Pageant

“Kimmy Schmidt” actress Ellie Kemper has finally posted a statement about her participation in a 1999 pageant.

It was unnecessary and too late. The media mob has moved on. But I told you all about this pageant and the group that puts it on, called Veiled Prophet. They’ve had Black members since 1979. They are a municipal fundraising group that donates money, time, and energy to minority organizations. But the media lynch mob went after them and Kemper anyway, blissfully oblivious to the facts.

Kemper took too long to respond. Her PR team did a bad job. But here’s what she says now:

Watch this Video: Amazon Chief Jeff Bezos Is Going to Be a Rocket Man Next Month, Taking His Brother on 11 Minute Flight

0

Jeff Bezos is going up where we don’t belong.

The Amazon chief, his brother, and the highest bidder are going on an 11 minute space flight on July 21st. They’ll be aboard one of Bezos’s rockets made his company Blue Origin.

Is it hubris or bravery? The third member of the group will pay upwards of $3 billion.

So this is why Jeff, at least, has been in physical training for more than a year. I can’t tell from the video if the brother has been, too.

So up they’ll go, outdoing Richard Branson, Elon Musk, and all the other swashbuckling billionaires who have to be first, the best, the richest. They’re not trained by NASA, and the flight is totally private. If they don’t make it make, they can’t sue the US government.

See the video below. The flight will only be 11 minutes long, but will reach heights of more than 60 miles above Earth.

Clive Davis Plans Concert of All Time for Central Park August 21st: Paul Simon? With Garfunkel? Bruce? Alicia Keys? Diana Ross? Stay Tuned

0

Clive Davis is planning the concert of all time for Central Park set for August 21st. People are going to start sleeping on the Great Lawn today to get ready. This is bigger than big.

The New York Times broke the story that Bill DeBlasio asked Clive to put together a Welcome Back to New York show for the Park. This was after Clive’s second marathon Zoom Grammy gala last month.

Who else could do this but the all time impresario of music? I’ve been lucky enough to attend decades worth of Clive Davis shows privately. There has never been a public show. This will be Clive’s “Gotterdammerung,” the be all and end all of shows.

Who might appear? Knowing Clive his wish list is Simon & Garfunkel, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Carole King, Jennifer Hudson, and oh yeah, Bob Dylan. Just for starters. Earth Wind & Fire, Carly Simon, Barry Manilow, and Dionne Warwick could be thrown in. I know Clive’s first thought, if only Aretha could be here…

Can he get all these people? What about Elton? Billy Joel? And can Central Park deal with this?

The answer is Yes. You know, when you watch DA Pennebaker’s film “Monterey Pop” shot in 1967 you see a young man wearing a white tennis sweater in the crowd, enthralled as Janis Joplin performs. He’s rocking back and forth, having a great, a square among hippies but a visionary among the stoned. That’s Clive. He signed her, and the rest is history. This will be his Monterey Pop Supreme.

So get ready. Vaccinate! Stake out your spot. Bring the tents and chairs. It’s going to be the longest, greatest night– or should I say day and night ever? A source close to this said to me, “It’s going to be three hours.”

I don’t think so.

Why am I suggesting these artists? Clive “broke” Simon & Garfunkel in the 60s. They love him. They gave the most historic Central Park Concert in 1981. Diana Ross and Carole King have each had their own historic CP shows. Alicia Keys is Clive’s artist. Imagine her singing “Empire State of Mind” with Jay Z? Amazing. Springsteen and Billy Joel need no explanation. Carly, Dionne, and Barry were all hit makers under Clive. Jennifer Hudson, also a Clive artist originally, could represent Aretha as her “Respect” movie opens a week earlier.

And we could be there all night!

New Rock Hall Inductee Billy Preston Died 15 Years Ago Today, His Estate is Still Not Settled

0

The great keyboardist, musician Billy Preston died 15 years ago today. His estate is still not settled.

Preston, known as the actual Fifth Beatle for his work on the Fab Four’s records, was recently announced as a new inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He will be inducted in Cleveland this October.

Billy, who I knew, lapsed into a coma in November 2005 after a botched medical situation and died the following June. He’d made it clear that his remaining relatives, and those who claimed to be relatives, were to have nothing to do with his estate.

Every year on this date I write this story. At one point, in 2016, it seemed like this might be all over. But when scoundrels are involved, there is no end to the skullduggery.

Billy’s family actually opened a probate claim on him three days before he died. That’s much how much they wanted to see him dead. Probates are generally opened only after someone has passed. If it worked the other way, anyone could file a probate claim on a living person with the reasoning “they didn’t look so good when I saw them.”

Hmmmm…

So the estate case has dragged on and on for one and a half decades, disgracefully. A woman claiming to be Billy’s half sister, whom no one had ever met before he died, continues to slug it out with his actual estate. She has no birth certificate or anything else proving her claim. But on and on this goes.

Still, Billy’s music lives on. The hits “Will it Go Round in Circles” and “Nothing from Nothing” are heard on the radio constantly. The song he co-wrote, “You Are So Beautiful,” is a classic. In August we’ll be seeing him in Peter Jackson’s documentary about the Beatles, “Get Back,” from the “Let it Be” sessions.

Maybe the courts will finally give Billy some peace this year.

Here’s a copy of that probate claim made on June 3, 2006 — three days before he died, by Billy’s family. Will it go round in circles? So far, yes.

UPDATED Billie Eilish’s Latest Single, “Lost Cause,” is an Actual Lost Cause, Image Change from Slacker to Femme Fatale May Be Cause

0

UPDATE WEDS JUNE 9TH The single has dropped to number 59. It’s dead. Lots of money is being poured into it with advertising, billboards, etc. But you can’t make people like a song. The fans are not taking to these two songs. Crossing fingers for better singles when the album arrives.

EARLIER Billie Eilish, the teen phenom with 7 Grammy Awards from 2020, and more still this past year, is having a tough time on the charts right now.

On Thursday she dropped her latest single, called “Lost Cause,” following a disappointment with “Your Power.”

Now “Lost Cause” seems like an actual lost cause. The single has sold just 2,600 downloads, pushing it down to number 25 35 on iTunes. With streaming, the number is higher– 53,800– but on Spotify’s Global Viral chart, “Lost Cause” is at number 13. It simply didn’t take off.

Eilish and her brother Finneas have certainly demonstrated their hitmaker abilities. And Eilish is popular as ever. But a change in image from slacker girl to pin up last month in Vogue, going platinum blonde with a Marilyn Monroe hairstyle, may have been too much of a jolt for her loyal followers.

That’s the only explanation for this abrupt sales drop. And Billie will be continuing that image change with her second album, coming July 30th, called “Happier Than Ever.” Her fans may not like her being so happy!

“General Hospital” Star Kirsten Storms Recovering from Brain Surgery at a Real Hospital with Real Doctors

Actress Kirsten Storms, who’s been playing Maxie Jones on “General Hospital” for years, is recovering from brain surgery.

She writes on Instagram right now:

“I spent the last few years having random health issues that I disregarded as side effects to my medications or just something I was experiencing due to age. When I went to get an MRI for some severe neck pain I have been experiencing for the last few months (I assumed this neck pain was also causing my frequent “migraines”) my amazingly thorough orthopedist ordered an MRI of my head just to be on the “safe side” – even though that isn’t his area of expertise.

“Truly a great doctor.

“That’s when we stumbled upon a rather large, very full of fluid, cyst that was attached to the lower portion of brain. I feel very fortunate that my situation wasn’t more serious and that I had a wonderful neurosurgeon who immediately knew how to fix it. I’m not gonna lie, brain surgery had me nervous, but I’m immensely thankful to my family, friends, and incredible “work family” who have been supportive, kind and loving during a time when I’ve been feeling a lot of emotions. Work is a great place to be everyday and for the 2 months leading up to my surgery I found a lot of comfort being around the people I’ve worked beside for so many years. I’m excited to get back to it after my recovery. (Yes, they shaved a portion of my head, so please no comments if you don’t like my hair. It’s temporary.)

Again, thank you to everyone for sending positive vibes my way. It’s not gone unnoticed. ♥️

“Fun fact: I now firmly believe the new plates in my brain will give me some sort of special ability. Fingers crossed I can suddenly knit a sweater in 1 day. Ooo maybe 1 hour. 😮”

Storms said in a previous posting that her pal, Emme Rylan, also of “GH” fame, was taking care of her.

Wishing her a speedy recovery. So she can get back to the fictional hospital. And those doctors usually lose their patients. Good thing she was in real hospital!
