Tinker, Actor, Grandson: New “Days of Our Lives” Player is 26 Year Old Grandson of Legendary TV Mogul Grant Tinker

When “Days of our Lives” announced a five part streaming mini series this week, one name on the cast list rang a bell.

Zach Tinker has been hired as the re-cast character Sonny Kiriakis. The 26 year old actor’s last name sounds familiar because he’s the grandson of the late legendary TV mogul, Grant Tinker. The silver haired Tinker was famous for creating MTM Studios with his wife, Mary Tyler Moore, and launched a bunch of classic hits including her self-named show, plus Rhoda, Lou Grant, Hill Street Blues, and St. Elsewhere, among others. After that, he ran NBC successfully for several years.

Zach Tinker, 26, is the son of John Tinker, who wrote for “St. Elsewhere,” the greatest hospital show of all time, which was produced by Mark Tinker (Grant’s son, John’s brother) and Bruce Paltrow, the late great father of Gwyneth. More recently John Tinker has been writing for Hallmark’s “When Calls the Heart” and other series.

I’m told the folks at “Days of our Lives” had no idea their new actor had such a storied lineage.

Zach appeared last year on “The Young and the Restless” and has had a bunch of solid jobs on shows like “American Horror Story” and “NCIS.” He’s certainly following in the family line of work! Zach’s mom is an exec at Disney.

I love stories about Hollywood families. Talent is talent. We wouldn’t have a lot of our favorite people without this tradition, from Michael Douglas, Jane Fonda, and Candice Bergen to Lucie Arnaz, Ben Stiller, Zosia Mamet, Matthew Broderick, John David Washington, and on and on! Sigourney Weaver’s dad created the Today show!

PS Zach could not actually call MTM his stepgrandmother. Tinker and Moore were divorced in 1981. Zach was born, basically, yesterday.

Ten Years Later, Actress Who Had a Concussion on “Spider Man” Musical Returns to Broadway with “Moulin Rouge”

0

When Broadway’s “Moulin Rouge” announced the replacement for Karen Olivo today, I thought, that name sounds familiar.

And it wasn’t who we predicted, namely Deborah Cox.

No, the new Satine in “Moulin Rouge” is Natalie Mendoza. I believe the last time she was on Broadway it was to play Arachne in “Spider Man: Turn off the Dark.” She played the role from June 2011 through January 2014.

But what you may not remember is that she was in the first preview, in December 2010. That crazy, raucous night nothing worked on stage. Everyone was flying around, getting stuck, or overshooting their marks.

Mendoza sustained a concussion that night and left the show. Her injury wasn’t from falling anywhere. She was standing offstage when she was struck in the head by a rope holding a piece of equipment. Ironically, her understudy then was another actress with a similar name to the one she’s now replacing: America Olivo.

Mendoza played one performance. On Facebook she wrote that she was grateful to be down to two nausea tablets and four painkillers a day to cope with her concussion. “Thank goodness I had such a brilliant neurologist who made sure I recovered properly,” she wrote. “Nice to be almost back to normal … almost anyway haha! Thanking God for peace, real friends, love and health and healing.”

At the time, it was said she was heading home to Australia. She’d had enough. But in time, she returned and overcame the various perils of “Turn Off the Dark.”

She’s now replacing Olivo, who bailed during the pandemic because she was upset people in other shows had been treated badly by producer Scott Rudin. She hadn’t even known him, but the whole Rudin scandal sent her off the deep end.

So welcome back, Natalie. I don’t think there’s any aerial work in “Moulin Rouge,” but if there is, I’m sure they have a net!

Last Week’s Ratings for “The Bachlorette” Dropped to Lowest Ever Numbers, 25% Down in the Key Age Group

0

Are you watching “The Bachelorette” on ABC tonight?

Just asking because last week’s numbers were shockingly bad. The series in its 17th season fell by 25% in the key age group, and 17.5% in total audience.

The actual number was 3.1 million, the lowest rating ever for “The Bachelorette” or “The Bachelor.”

I don’t know what’s going on with the show. Last week, I was washing my hair and missed the latest shenanigans among these sociopaths. But I do know that since Chris Harrison was bounced, the whole thing has toppled. Over 600,000 viewers have exited since the first episode of this season. Maybe everyone’s watching “F-Boy Island,” on HBOMax, which I thought was a parody or a spin off from “30 Rock.”

Anyway, we’ll see who tunes in tonight for this claptrap, and if the numbers can somehow be spun to say ABC won the night, but lost the war.

Rapper DaBaby Career in Free Fall: Governor’s Ball Drops and Erases Him, Following Lollapalooza Scrub

0

Rapper DaBaby is in a career free fall.

Latest news is the performer whose real name is Jonathan Kirk has been dropped from the three day Governor’s Ball festival in September in New York. They’ve scrubbed him from their posters and website.

On Twitter the festival wrote: “Founders Entertainment does not and will not tolerate hate or discrimination of any kind. We welcome and celebrate the diverse communities that make New York City the greatest city in the world. Thank you to the fans who continue to speak up for what is right. Along with you, we will continue to use our platform for good.”

This and DaBaby’s ousting from Lollapalooza comes after reports of the rapper’s incendiary homophobic comments in public last week. Elton John, Madonna and other celebrities have denounced him. He responded on Twitter with this:

“Anybody who done ever been effected by AIDS/HIV y’all got the right to be upset, what I said was insensitive even though I have no intentions on offending anybody. So my apologies But the LGBT community… I ain’t trippin on y’all, do you. y’all business is y’all business.”
That didn’t make things any better, of course. DaBaby will have to call Nick Cannon, who was briefly ostracized for being anti-Semitic last year. Cannon went on a big apology tour and wormed his way back into the good graces of people who could make money off of him. (Others, not so much.)
Who will be next to drop DaBaby? He’s set to be at the Hot97 Summer Jam at the Meadowlands is August 22nd. I would imagine they are scrambling to find a replacement right now.

BREAKING Kathy Griffin Says She Has Lung Cancer, Will Have Half of Left Lung Removed Today in Surgery

0

Comedian and actress Kathy Griffin has just dropped a bombshell on Twitter: she has lung cancer. And she’s about to have half her left lung removed in surgery.

Griffin says she never smoked. We are sending prayers and love to her. Kathy is a delight and I know she will beat this!

She says in her note that the last four years have been rough. She got into trouble and was briefly “cancelled” for posting a decapitated, bloodied head of Donald Trump to social media. It was very funny but not to Trump supporters. Happily, Kathy came back from that debacle. But this is a gut punch. Again, send prayers and light and love, consult all experts with the universe. I know that the spirit of Joan Rivers is watching over from heaven!

LISTEN The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) Dropping New Music: “The Dawn” is Coming, Maybe with Ariana Grande

0

Abel Tesfaye is in “the zone.” He’s just having a hit after hit as The Weeknd. Right now he’s got a terrific remixed duet of “Save Your Tears” with Ariana Grande all over the radio. (It sounds like they sang over an old Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark record!)

The Weeknd is dropping new music this week called “The Dawn.” He posted a snippet to Youtube last night. His last album, “After Hours,” was famously snubbed by the Grammys. Now he says he won’t submit any more music to them. If I were the Grammys, I’d just enter it themselves and hit him with a bunch of nominations this time around.

This clip starts with a disco riff but ends with a melody and a good foreboding. I’m ready!

PS And still no new Adele, six years anniversary coming November 15th.

Jennifer Hudson Goes to Detroit And Wins Over Aretha Franklin’s Family, Friends at Private “Respect” Screening

0

Jennifer Hudson went to Detroit Sunday and showed “Respect,” her Aretha Franklin biopic, to the Queen of Soul’s family and friends. Now, that’s brave.

On Friday she also attended the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, where the movie was screened before a very discerning crowd.

From both locations, I’ve gotten word that the movie went over very well. Hudson is unsurprisingly headed to another Oscar nomination, maybe even a win next spring.

The movie opens on August 13th.

Earlier in the day Sunday, Hudson made the rounds with director Liesl Tommy at the Detroit Historical Museum and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. There are exhibits all over saluting Aretha right now.

People close to Aretha who saw it Sunday night tell me Jennifer is sensational, the singing if exceptional, and that Aretha would be proud. What I’ve also heard is that Liesl Tommy’s movie is not perfect. (Few movies are.) “It’s a little choppy,” I heard, but that may be because TV’s “Nashville” creator and “Thelme and Louise” director  Callie Khouri’s original screenplay was amended by Tracey Scott Wilson, who often collaborates with Tommy on her theater pieces.

But that’s not going to matter. Says one viewer: “It’s not about Aretha’s personal life or details of her love life. We don’t get a lot about her great sisters. It’s about her music and how she found her voice, and her style. That part works, and that’s all that matters.”

That is all that matters. I can tell you that’s all Aretha wanted from a movie, for it to cement her in the culture through film. She’s already there with the music. But she knew the power of cinema. And no one alive today could represent her on the big screen as well as Jennifer Hudson.

In the Detroit crowd: Aretha’s beloved cousin Brenda and husband James Corbett, the Queen’s sons Kecalf and Eddie, Aretha’s grandchildren, devoted niece Sabrina Owens and her husband Oliver, Cristal Franklin, her daughter Brooklyn, great sister-in-law Earline Franklin (who once made me the most delicious Southern lunch with Aretha in the Hamptons), head of security and friend Hilton Kincaid, Aretha’s hair stylist, Carlton Northern plus Aretha’s long time assistant Zoretha Coleman, and her favorite photographer, Linda Solomon.

The lieutenant Governor of Michigan was also there with two local congresswomen.

There’s a big premiere in Los Angeles next Sunday, and then shows begin on Thursday night the 12th with special preview screenings all over the country. I’m told the end of the movie is very emotional, as the real Aretha appears and sings, followed by a scrapbook of rare photos. What could be better? For everyone who knew Aretha well, we’re so happy she’s getting this tribute.

Of course there are plenty of stories to tell still about the magnificent Ms. Franklin– funny, sad, poignant. They’ll all be told in time, I’m sure!

Billie Eilish Has Sold a Lot of CDs, LPs, and Downloads of Her New Album Since Thursday Night, Like 145K Copies

0

Billie Eilish can breathe a sigh of relief. Even if it’s shortlived, her second album is a hit.

“Happier than Ever” was released at 9pm west coast time in Los Angeles and proceeded  to sell 145,000 copies through Sunday.

Two thirds of the sales were physical– LPs, CDs, and downloads. The rest was from streaming.

Ironically, no single has taken off from the album although the title track, “Happier than Ever,” has gotten as high as number 24 on iTunes.

This should be happy news for the 19 year old since she released five singles ahead of the album and three of them were strikes, not hits.

I tried the album and the only song I thought had some energy was “My Future.” But the album is not for me, it’s for teen girls.

The songs themselves wouldn’t seem to much potential life apart from the album. They’re personal in a specific way and don’t have much in the way of melodies. But it’s the power of a 19 year old speaking to her peers that’s selling the copies. And traditionally, you can”t beat that.

Hitsdailydouble.com think  “Happier” will go to 220,000 copies by Thursday night. Meanwhile, there are new albums this week from Prince, Julia Fordham, and the Bleachers that I’d rather be listening to.

Box Office: “Green Knight” (G’night), “Stillwater” Tanks, “Jungle Cruise” Sinks, “Old” Gets Old Fast

0

People went to the movies this weekend but not in droves. And in one case just not enough.

That would be Disney’s ‘Jungle Cruise,” which took $34 million at the Box office and maybe $30 mil more on Disney Premiere Access. But it’s not enough! This movie cost $200 million. This is going to be a long slog. They’ve picked up $27 million abroad, but more, more, more! Not a hit by any stretch. Not a disaster, Yet.

“Green Knight” from A24 got a lot of hype but not much love from the audience. Just under $6.8 million weekend. Love Dev Patel but really have no interest in this. Since no one from A24 responded, I will venture into a theater this week for my Rotten Tomatoes review.

M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old” got “old” fast. Total take is now $30 million. Not surprised since this is not a movie anyone would want to see again, let alone the first time.

Really in worse shape is the G.I. Joe movie “Snake Eyes,” basically dead after 2 weeks at $27 million.

Kudos to Focus Features for wrangling $4 million so far from “Roadrunner,” the Anthony Bourdain doc that had some controversy surrounding the director inventing dialogue for the deceased globe trotting gourmand. That’s a much better showing than “Summer of Soul,” and at least this one was original.

Review: The Suicide Squad Rises from Wreckage of 2016 to Be the Best of All DC Comics Movies

0

Stop me if you’ve heard this already: James Gunn has made a miracle of  comic book movie with “The Suicide Squad,” and Margot Robbie could actually get an Oscar nomination for playing Harley Quinn.

So what else? I laughed and cried with “The Suicide Squad,” not be confused with 2016’s “Suicide Squad” which lacked the article defining it as well as a sense of humor, rhythm, or focus.

Gunn comes to DC comics from his Marvel hits “Guardians of the Galaxy” and its sequel. Those movies had a new energy, an off the cuff, glib, knowing feel to them that made them seem fresh and alive. Gunn proved that he was adept at directing ensembles and delineating characters you cared about, even Groot and Rocket.

In “TSS,” Groot and Rocket — the Rosencranz and Guildenstern of “Galaxy” — appear in new forms. There is Weasel (played by Gunn’s brother), King Shark (Steve Agee, voiced by Sylvester Stallone), and two very animated rats (who don’t say anything but are very evocative).

To this group we add the Suicide Squad as assembled by returning Viola Davis (who you will hear use uncharacteristic foul language), representing the government. She’s trying to rescue the people of a small island nation off the coast of South America called Corto Maltese. From a motley crew (long story) of colorful characters she taps criminals, idiots, and losers including Harley (Robbie), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag). and some newbies including Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2. (Her father, Ratcatcher 1, turns up briefly in the person of Taika Waikiki.)

There is also David Dastmalchian as the Polka Dot Man, the first Freudian super hero in movie or comics history. He can only attack villains if he equates them with his mother, who haunts him the way Mae Questel hovered as the monster in Woody Allen’s part of “New York Stories.” PDM’s super power is dispensing explosive polka dots (I’m not kidding). He is completely bizarre.

There are others, including Pete Davidson’s Blackguard and Michael Rooker’s Savant. There are a LOT of characters, they come and go but all make solid impressions. You imagine the original screenplay must have been 300 pages. Gunn’s story is brimming with ideas but to his credit he cuts away all the fat and sticks to his main branch. Just when it looks like we’re going to get overcrowded with eccentrics spewing funny lines, Gunn pares back.

And there is a lot of humor. It’s a very witty screenplay with lots of humorous volleys back and forth among the Squad. Jon Cena’s Peacemaker gets one of my favorite lines when he admits “I am the Peacemaker and I’ll kill anyone who gets in my way to make peace.” (He’s getting his own TV series soon.)

I don’t want get too far into the weeds here. What you need to know is that for three quarters of the movie, Gunn holds the reins tight. Eventually we have to get to a huge final, crazy fight sequence with a gigantic blue starfish. (Don’t ask.) But his set pieces are top notch. There’s kind a mini masterpiece with Harley Quinn breaking loose from kidnapping to the sounds of Louie Prima singing “Just a Gigolo ” and “Ain’t Got Nobody”) that is the best use of music and visuals I’ve seen in a long time. Watch for psychedelic flowers.

Elba is outstanding as Bloodsport, who should be the Nick Fury of these movies. He’s an overnight sensation. Kinnaman is very, very good. The Agee/Stallone King Shark is a hoot, and kudos to the artists who worked on him.

As with all James Gunn movies, the music rocks. At the start, he explains the characters and their early fates so perfectly with Jim Carroll’s punk classic, “People Who Died” that I jumped for a minute. Who uses that song? James Gunn. Plus, Gunn almost breaks the fourth wall, using Easter eggs galore and nice scene setting title cards (very modern versions) to keep the story straight and always moving forward.

All the production levels are A plus. The main thing, you’ll want to see “The Suicide Squad” again, and again. I can’t wait to see it again. And more time: Margot Robbie, who’s played Harley Quinn in the original movie and her own film, exceeds all expectations. She’s the heart and soul of this operation.

“The Suicide Squad” is easily the best DC comics movie, one of the 10 best super hero movies ever of all studios. Previews are August 5th, opening day is the 6th, and I look forward to writing a great box office story that weekend. Try and see it on a big screen and not at home. Get a vax, wear a mask, and enjoy it the way it’s meant to be seen!
