Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, David Byrne Show Up for Cate Blanchett’s Cutely Loopy New York Film Critics Dinner

0

And Martin Scorsese sent in a video, showing that work on “Killers of the Flower Moon” is giving him baggage under his eyes. (The man looks tired, but editing proceeds.)

The New York Film Critics Dinner at Tao Restaurant last night was full of fun and surprises. Seth Meyers, a Colin Farrell fan, showed up to present Best Actor but Farrell was MIA. Stephen Colbert anointed Cate Blanchett Best Actress for “Tar,” which also won Best Feature. That prize was given by Scorsese on video, though he seemed like he might take a nap any minute during his speech.

Talking Heads’ David Byrne presented to Laura Poitras who won the Documentary prize for her “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed.”

The highlights of the night included Blanchett and Banshees star Kerry Condon. Blanchett arrived late last night after flying in from the wilds of Australia. Jet lagged, the star of “Tar” gave a cutely loopy acceptance speech from a sheath of papers. She’s already on her way to L.A. for more awards shows, which means she’s just been flying around the world for two days. My gosh. Condon presented in absentia awards for Colin Farrell and “Banshees” director Martin McDonagh and was so charming half the room was swooning. With her Irish accent and red hair, when she pronounces the word film in two syllables, it sounds like music.

Other emotional speeches came from Best Supporting Actor Ke Huy Quan and Best Supporting Actress Keke Palmer. Quan joked that Palmer’s “Nope” director Jordan Peele, who was in the audience, may change his name to “Ke Ke Ke” because he likes the “Ke” sound (Keegan Michael Key was Palmer’s longtime comedy partner, Keke Palmer– get it?). Quan is part of the 90s nostalgia wave this Year (like Brendan Fraser) but he’s also the happiest man in Hollywood as a perpetual nominee from “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

We also got to meet Danny Ramirez currently flying high in “Top Gun.” He told me he became addicted to the flying in Air Force jets. He’s ready for the “Maverick” sequel. Ramirez next stars as the Falcon to Anthony Mackie’s Captain America” In the next chapter of that Marvel series.

Scorsese, by the way, could not wax more poetic about “Tar.” His abridged comments follow but they don’t include the moment when he looked into the camera and said of Blanchett’s amazing performance, “Cate, I don’t even know what you’re doing there. It feel like the beginning of a new career.” Or something like that. And don;t forget, Scorsese directed Blanchett to an Oscar in “The Aviator.”

Scorsese:

For so long now, so many of us see films that pretty much let us know where they’re going. I mean, they take us by the hand, and even if it’s disturbing at times, sort of comfort us along the way that it will be all okay by the end. Now this is insidious, as one can get lulled into this, and ultimately get used to it.
Leading those of us who’ve experienced cinema in the past — as much more than that— to become despairing of the future of the art form, especially for younger generations. But that’s on dark days. The clouds lifted when I experienced Todd’s film, TÁR.
What you’ve done, Todd –– is that the very fabric of the movie you created doesn’t allow this. All the aspects of cinema and the film that you’ve used, attest to this. The shift in locations for example, the shift in locations alone do what cinema does best, which is to reduce space and time to what they are, which is nothing.
You make it so that we exist in her head. We experience only through her perception. The world is her. Time, chronology and space, become the music that she lives by. And we don’t know where the film’s going. We just follow the character on her strange, upsetting road to her even stranger final destination.
Now, what you’ve done, Todd –– it’s a real high wire act, as all of this is conveyed through a Masterful Mise-en-scène, as controlled, precise, dangerous, precipitous angles, and edges geometrically kind of chiseled into a wonderful 2:3:5 aspect ratio of frame compositions. The limits of the frame itself, and the provocation of measured long takes all reflecting the brutal architecture of her soul — TÁR’s soul.

“Yellowstone” Is Booming But Harrison Ford-Helen Mirren Spin Off “1923” Loses 54% of Audience

0

Just as always, “Yellowstone” is booming on Sunday nights. This past Sunday the Kevin Costner horse opera brought in around 9 million viewers on the Paramount Channel and CMT. Yee hah!

But “Yellowstone” is not creating hit spin offs. Following the main show at 9pm comes the very expensive “1923” prequel starring huge movie stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. The thinking was that this combo would make another “Yellowstone.” Alas, it’s not happened.

While “Yellowstone” has 9 million viewers, “1923” is not taking off as planned. On Sunday, 54% of the viewers tuned out at 9, leaving just 3.7 million on the main channel and a similar decline on CMT.

“1923” follows other “Yellowstone” spin offs like “Tulsa King,” and “1883,” which had likewise samplings but haven’t found the popularity of the original show.

What’s missing from “1923”? I’m not sure but according to people who saw it, Ford and Mirren only appear briefly. This sounds a lot like back in the day– waaaay in the past– when the “Dynasty” spin off “The Colbys” advertised Barbara Stanwyck as their matriarch. She lasted a few episodes and then rode off into the sunset.

Dolly Parton, Cyndi Lauper, Belinda Carlisle, Gloria Estefan, and…Debbie Harry Releasing a Single

0

It’s taking five divas from the 80s to record the official song from “80 for Brady.”

The football themed movie set for next month stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field, and Rita Morena. It’s a comedy and all the ladies travel to see their hero, Tom Brady, play ball. When the movie was made, of course, Brady was married. Now he’s single. If only they’d known when they made it that he’d be available!

Anyway, Diane Warren has written a song for the film called “Gonna Be You.” She got together not one, not two but five female hit songmakers from the 80s to sing the song. They are Dolly Parton, Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Estefan, Belinda Carlisle, and — weirdly — Blondie’s Debbie Harry. So that’s country, pop, Latin, and two new wavers.

The song releases on January 12th. PS At least it’s not a new “Lady Marmalade”!

Broadway Box Office Jumps Astounding $17 Million During Christmas Week, Shows Set Records

0

Wow. After a lackluster week before December 25th, Broadway came roaring back the week ending New Year’s Eve.

Box office was up by a shocking $17 million, totaling $51 million. That’s insane.

Many shows claimed records for their theaters including “Funny Girl” and “Hadestown.”

Fourteen shows played to 100% capacity — or more. “The Lion King,” “Music Man,” and “Wicked” led the way, “The Lion King” took in over $4 million in one week! “Hamilton” was not far behind with $2.7 million, and “Funny Girl” right behind it with $2.4 million.

Some smaller shows, like “Ohio State Murders” and “Top Dog/Underdog” did very well, also. So did “Leopoldstadt.”

Well, they always say Broadway is dead. But it’s not. Welcome back, everyone!

Grimes, Mother of Two Elon Musk Children, Tweets: “I’m the luckiest girl on earth,” Says “Fame and notoriety is a unique hell”

0

Grimes is the stage name for Claire Elise Boucher. She’s a writer, singer, and performance artist. She has two children with Elon Musk, named X and Y. (Their real names are unpronounceable.)

Today she posted a minor rant to Twitter, and Musk has not replied. She’s in a tough spot. She wants to be an artist of her own measure, yet she can’t avoid the fact that she’s tied to the world’s second richest man who may have lost his mind a little this winter. I don’t know what’s in her book but it will be pored over for information about the Tesla-Twitter owner and anything it might say about him. She should really call it “Grimes and Misdemeanors.”

In the Tweet she says “Fame and notoriety is a unique hell.” It should be “are a unique hell.” I guess her copy editors will catch that.

Good News: Jeremy Renner Posts to Social Media After Horrific Accident: “I send love to you all”

0

Jeremy Renner looks pretty good considering his horrific accident on New Year’s Day. He’s had two surgeries and is still listed in critical but stable condition after being run over by a snow plow on his property near Reno, Nevada. According to some reports he was helping someone on the extremely snowed in road. Everyone wishes him a speedy recovery. It looks like he’s on his way. You can’t keep an Avenger down!

“Elvis” Getting Huge Oscar Push This Sunday with Free Showings in 10 Cities, HBO Max Birthday Special

0

Warner Bros. is giving Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” the biggest Oscar push ever because, frankly, this is a wide open race for Best Picture.

On Sunday, which would have been Elvis Presley’s 87th birthday, so the studio is having free showings all over the country of the “Elvis” movie. There are ten shows in each of 10 cities, at 5pm including New York, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas, Toronto and Vancouver.

All above screenings will take place at 5:00 PM local time except Los Angeles, which begins at 4:00 PM PST.

Memphis, home to Presley’s beloved Graceland, will also host an afternoon screening at 2:00 p.m. in the estate’s Guest House Theater for fans in town for Elvis’s Birthday Celebration. Tickets will be available here.

There’s also a 30 minute special coming to HBO Max on Sunday called “Just a Boy from Tupelo.” Warner’s is also partnering with Graceland for a bunch of events at our national monument to Mr. Swivel Hips.

Look for a possible surprise next week as “Elvis” could turn out to be winner at the Golden Globes. It isn’t controversial, it’s well made and because Tom Cruise has sort of 86d “Maverick” from the Globes and ditto Brendan Fraser with “The Whale,” “Elvis” could be the solution. Austin Butler has picked up steam, too, for Best Actor.

Warner’s is also weighing on Sunday with a big pre-Globes party for “Elvis.” Suspicious minds at work here…

Tesla Stock Price Starts the New Year in Short Circuit with Shipping, Inventory and Twitter Causing New Lows

0

It’s just not a great time for Elon Musk.

Twitter kicked off 2023 dropping $15.08 to $108.10. It could have been worse: the low for the day was $104.64.

Today’s drop was 12.24%, the average daily drop for Tesla in the last couple of weeks.

The company has shipping and inventory problems, yes. But the ongoing Twitter conflicts don’t help the situation. Meanwhile, Musk remains up beat on Twitter. I’d like his happy pills!

UPDATE Golden Globes Issue “Disappointing” List of First Round Presenters, Biggest Name is Quentin Tarantino

0

The Golden Globes have released their first list of presenters, and one colleague of mine has described it as “disappointing, to say the least.”

The biggest name on the list is Quentin Tarantino. The others are much less well known including Ana De Armas, Ana Gasteyer, Billy Porter, Colman Domingo, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Natasha Lyonne, Nicole Byer, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Tracy Morgan.

It could be that some of them are already guaranteed awards just for showing up. Some people were surprised (and happy — I’m a big fan) to see long ago “SNL” star Ana Gasteyer. But she’s in an NBC comedy returning this winter called “American Auto.” She may be the first of many NBC TV stars promoting their shows.

As for Jamie Lee Curtis, she’s loved by the Globes. This is her eighth nomination this year. She’s won twice. I’m surprised she’s not the host!

Golden Globes Fight Extinction as Studios Decline to Host After Parties for Next Week’s Show

0

The Golden Globes are fighting extinction.

When their show airs live next Tuesday from the Beverly Hilton, it will be a much different scenario than in the past.

Traditionally five or six large– and I mean huge — parties take place at the Hilton immediately following the show. HBO takes over a massive downstairs space, Warner Bros. has its own large room, plus Netflix, Universal, Sony set up gigantic tents. The hotel is brimming with guests crisscrossing the hallways.

This year, however, there are no studio parties. The only party will be one sponsored by Billboard magazine, which has actually nothing to do with the Globes. But Billboard is owned by MRC, the company that now owns the Globes and Dick Clark Productions. They will stage a party where HBO used to, in Club 55, downstairs at the Hilton where breakfast is served and there’s an outdoor patio. The rest of the Hilton will be silent aside from actual guests.

Some parties will take place over the weekend. Netflix is having a celebration on Sunday, so is Warner Bros. But that’s it.

Studios are wary of showing approval for the Globes after two years of scandal revolving around diversity and finances. The Globes had no Black voters until they were pressured to in 2020. Since then they’ve added about a dozen. But that group are not members, and it’s unclear if they will even participate in the show.

NBC has wisely only given the Globes a one year contract after not showing them at all last year. Will this be the final installment? And what will happen if “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser wins Best Actor in a Drama? Fraser has already said he will not come to the event after being groped by a Hollywood Foreign Press Association member during an event in 2003.

Stay tuned…
