Exclusive: Why “Killers of the Flower Moon” Director Martin Scorsese Missed the Gotham Awards — He Got an Acting Gig

0

So where was Martin Scorsese last night? I asked around.

One friend said, “Taking a nap, I hope!”

No kidding. Scorsese filled in for his striking actors doing all the promotional stuff for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” He did every appearance and interview. Scorsese is 81 but that didn’t stop him. He was unflagging.

Last weekend he was supposed to appear at the Marrakesh Film Festival. He cancelled at the last minute, which got tongues wagging.

Last night, he got out of the Gotham Awards even though there was a tribute to him and the film, His bff Robert De Niro and actress Lily Gladstone filled in for him.

So what’s up? It turns out Scorsese is “exhausted” because he’s been in Italy filming a scene for two for artist-director Julian Schnabel in his new film, “In the Hands of Dante.” The film stars Jason Momoa, Gerard Butler, Al Pacino, Oscar Isaac, and Gal Gadot among others. It’s based on a book by Nick Tosches.

Scorsese was already serving as Executive Producer for Schnabel, who’s made great films like “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” and “At Eternity’s Gate.” But the movie involves the mob underworld, and who better to play such a part for the famed artist than the man who made “Goodfellas” and “The Irishman”?

It’s a good time for Scorsese to take a break before the real Oscar campaigning begins. “Killers of the Flower Moon” is a masterpiece, and he should soon be reaping the rewards. And next year, we’ll get to see him on screen. (Although as you may know he makes a cameo in “Killers.”)

Gotham Awards: “Past Lives” is Unlikely Choice for Best Feature, Best Performance Goes to Lily Gladstone

0

Tonight’s Gotham Awards almost went off without a hitch. (See De Niro story)

Overall, the night was a hit, with Jeff Sharp and co. upping their game by turning the night into a black tie affair. To supplement the indie films that were nominated, the Gothams offered tribute awards to a bunch of big ticket movies who brought their star studded casts. They included “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Barbie,” “Rustin,” etc.

The new idea worked so that indie filmmakers got more attention by being mixed in with big names.

Lots of people met each other for the first time, too. One of the best moments was when Bradley Cooper and Colman Domingo got a chance to say hello to each other. They may be the top choices for Best Actor at the Oscars in March.

A big surprise for the night was Celine Song’s “Past Lives” getting Best Feature after Song lost both Best Director and Screenplay. Plus Best Performance went to Lily Gladstone, not for “Killers of the Flower Moon” but for a small film called “The Unknown Country.” I think this shows how much good will Gladstone has — watch for the Oscars for “Killers.”

I got to meet a lot of cool people including Da’Vine Randolph and Danielle Brooks, each of whom will be in the Oscar mix. Rebecca Hall and Morgan Spector were best looking couple of the night, and they were each presenters.

Yes, the Gothams were used this year as a marketing tool for Oscar movies, but that was just fine. When Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman presented the final award, Best Feature, it lent glamour to the proceedings. (Imagine that they are now our elders, our vets! They’re too young!

Moore and Portman’s co-star in “May December,” Charles Melton, was the surprise winner in Supporting Performance. (The acting awards are gender free, which most people feel is a big mistake. But that’s for another time.) Melton had the women swooning in his shirt free outfit. We joked that with this win he could now afford a shirt. (He didn’t laugh as much as I thought he would, but he’s a very nice, earnest guy– so far!)

Other stars in the mix: Penelope Cruz, who inconceivably lost Best Supporting (because it was gender free), looked gorgeous, would have won Best Supporting Actress for “Ferrari” and will be Oscar nominated. And Willem Dafoe, sans “Poor Things” scars, back to normal and thankful everyone’s enjoying that movie — which will open soon, plus “American Fiction” star Jeffrey Wright, and “Rustin” veteran actor Glynn Turman.

Leonardo DiCaprio was in the house, but he was more like a cypher. “Killers” director Martin Scorsese was a no show, but I know why– next item.

Gotham Awards: Robert De Niro Snaps at Apple Studios for Cutting Trump, John Wayne Out of Speech: “How dare they!” (Listen)

0

Robert De Niro is very unhappy with Apple Studios.

Reading his speech honoring Martin Scorsese and Killers of the Flower Moon at tonight’s Gotham Awards. De Niro became momentarily confused by the Teleprompter. Then he realized his words including a damnation of Donald Trump had been severely edited.

De Niro proceeded to read aloud what he intended to say. He went on thank various people but when he got to Apple he immediately disowned them.

A fervent critic of Trump. De Niro suffers no fools. It’s hard to imagine how this will play out with Apple on Tuesday.

How it began: De Niro reading from the Teleprompter suddenly stopped and shuffled papers.

He said, “I’m going to go back. I’m sorry. Okay, there was a mistake in this. I’ll keep going. Just keep scrolling.”

“I just want to say one thing,” he said, getting the papers in order (this took just nano seconds but the whole room fell silkent. “The beginning of my speech was edited, cut out, and I didn’t know about it. And I want to read it. History isn’t history anymore. Truth is not truth. Even facts are being replaced by alternative facts, and driven by conspiracy theories and ugliness.”

Now he had the attention of the room completely.

He continued: “In Florida, young students are taught that slaves developed skills that could be applied for their personal benefit. The entertainment industry isn’t immune to this festering disease. The Duke, John Wayne, famously said of Native Americans, ‘I don’t feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them. There were great numbers of people who needed new land and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.’”

The John Wayne line stopped the show. I think even the waiters looked up.

“Lying has become just another tool in the charlatan’s arsenal. The former President lied to us more than 30,000 times during his four years in office. And he’s keeping up the pace in his current campaign of retribution. But with all his lies, he can’t hide his soul. He attacks the weak, destroys the gifts of nature and shows disrespect, for example, by using ‘Pocahontas’ as a slur. Filmmakers, on the other hand, strive — this is where I came in and I saw that they edited all that,” he said.

Again, not a word in the room. De Niro went in for the wrap up but no one expected this: “So I’m going to say these things but to Apple and thank them all that…Gotham, blah blah blah, but I don’t feel like thanking them at all for what they did. How dare they do that, actually. But now I will go to: Accepting the award for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’…”

It may be the most famous moment from any Gotham Awards. I would not want to be Apple executives this morning.

The Kinks Reunite: After Years of Feuding, Ray and Dave Davies Look Happy Together at Football Game

0

The Kinks are finally at peace.

Brothers Ray Davies and Dave Davies have famously feuded on and off for 50 years. Eventually, their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group imploded and they went their separate ways. They made solo albums, wrote books and attacked each other in print.

So it’s very reassuring to see them post a photo looking like loving bro’s. It’s about time. We don’t need a new album but maybe a big Kinks farewell concert. Their many hits include “You Really Got Me,” “Sunny Afternoon,” “Destroyer,” “Lola,” “All Day and All of the Night,” and many, many more.

What brought them together? Arsenal Football, of course!

Colbert Out for a Week with Ruptured Appendix, Chooses Threads to Make Social Media Announcement

0

Stephen Colbert is out for a week He ruptured his appendix and had surgery for Thanksgiving.

He must be aggravated after missing a week for COVID just two weeks ago.

More importantly, Colbert used Threads as his social media for the announcement. He skipped Twitter X and Instagram. This means a lot.

He wrote: “Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week. I’m sure you’re thinking, “Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?” Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix. I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas.”

Stephen will get better, no doubt. But Twitter? If more celebrities turn to Threads and away from Elon Musk’s platform, emergency surgery will be needed!

Donald Trump Gets Sensitive About Cognitive Decline Accusations, Says It’s Sarcasm When He Says Obama, Means Biden

0

Donald Trump is getting sensitive about accusations of his cognitive decline.

On social media this morning he says it’s just “sarcasm” when he mistakes Obama for Biden in his speeches. Now he obviously is being facetious.

Trump, who looks like a large lump of cold mashed potatoes, insists he ACED his medical exam recently. He also rails against every modern, progressive concept. He wants to return to 1949 ASAP.

Here’s his post:

NBC Today Show X Account Mixes Up Black Celebrities Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy, Al Roker

0

The Today Show X account thinks Will Smith has a son named Eric (he doesn’t).

They also don’t know the difference among Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, and Martin Lawrence.

This is really embarrassing. Who’s going to tell them?

Taylor Swift Domination of 2023 Complete: Eras Tour Movie Coming to Streaming on December 13th — With Extra Material

0

Taylor Swift will complete her domination of 2023 on December 13th.

That’s when she’ll release her “Eras Tour” concert movie to streaming. It will still be in theaters as well.

“Eras Tour” has made $250 worldwide. But here’s a chance for fans to cough up more dough in Taylor’s direction. She’s also sold the most number of albums in 2023 of any recording act, completely dwarfing everyone else. She’s probably sold the most merch, too.

Swift is also current Homecoming Queen at the NFL thanks to dating Travis Kelce, and she’s selling out stadiums on every continent.

She’s just a girl with a dream!

Model Gigi Hadid Posts Propaganda Video Claiming Israel Harvests Organs of Dead Palestinians “For Years”

Model Gigi Hadid certainly hates Israelis, and by extension, Jews.

She’s reposted a propaganda video on Instagram telling her followers that Israel harvests the organs of dead Palestinians “for years without their consent.”

Hadid is represented by IMG Models, which must drop her immediately.

Hadid has also been paid six figure sums for endorsing brands like Maybelline, Tommy Hilfiger, Stuart Weitzman, Messika, Moshino, BMW, Reebok, Michael Kors, Vogue Eyewear, etc. She is associated with many famous fashion labels as well. Let’s see if they stick with her now.

This role model model appeared in blackface on the cover of Italian Vogue in 2018. Why wasn’t she cancelled then?

RIP R&B Queen Jean Knight, Her Bouncy New Orleans Hit “Mr. Big Stuff” Lives On 50 Years Later as a Radio Standout

0

Jean Knight had one big hit, but boy, what a hit.

“Mr. Big Stuff” was a humongous radio smash in the summer of 1971. You couldn’t get away from it and you didn’t want to. Jean sang it with such personality, it was the kind of single you never get tired of hearing. It earned her a Grammy nomination, too. And to this day, “Mr. Big Stuff” is heard over and over again.

“Mr. Big Stuff” was part of the revitalized Stax Records of the early 70s. Interestingly, though, it was recorded at the nearby Jackson, Mississippi record label, Malaco. But as her bio says, they didn’t know what to do with it. (Right after losing “Mr. Big Stuff,” Malaco was smart to jump on the bandwagon for Denise LaSalle, and hits with her.) It was recorded in the same session as King Floyd’s hit, “Groove Me.”

Jean was paid once to record the song. But because she didn’t write it, she received no royalties beyond record sales– if she even got those. When you hear her voice over those bouncy New Orleans horns, remember that it’s coming to you for free.

So sorry to hear that Jean has passed at age 80. She’s part of R&B history. Condolences to her family and friends.

Here’s her official bio.
