Golden Globes Sign Five Year Deal with CBS: Awards Show is Back After Many Scandals

CBS has signed a five year deal with the Golden Globes.

The much tarnished awards show scored a 9.6 million audience this year, evidence that home viewers still want it despite scandals.

Or maybe because of them.

The deal is with Dick Clark Productions, which is owned in part by the same company that owns Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard, and many other trade publications.

The Globes used to be run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But the HFPA was disbanded over scandals concerning finances and diversity. They used to be on NBC, which passed on new editions.

It’s a win for the Globes, but CBS is now awash in special programming. One astute TV expert tells me:

“CBS will have the GRAMMYS & AMAs,  the CMT Music Video Awards, the Tonys and the Kennedy Center Honors. Then they are carrying the NAACP Awards and GRO awards which are ratings disasters, They have the Daytime Emmys and get the Emmys every 4 years, Paramount Global can also get CBS to carry the BET Awards as they play on multiple cable channels under the Paramount Global System  or even the MTV Music Video Awards.

“It is like CBS will have an awards show every month, Is every show that industry’s biggest night or the “party of the year” or the “hottest night in country?  This is short sighted.”

Disgraceful: Appellate Judges Cut Trump’s Bond to $175 Million, Allow Him and Sons to Continue Doing Business

0

This just in: A panel of 5 cowardly judges has allowed Donald Trump to post a lower bond — $175 million — for appeal in his fraud trial. They’ve also stayed the order that Trump and his sons are barred from doing business in New York.

Disgraceful. Trump will be crowing about this as a win all over any media that will have him.

Link to the motion.

“It is ordered that the motion is granted to the extent of staying enforcement of
those portions of the Judgment (1) ordering disgorgement to the Attorney General of
$464,576,230.62, conditioned on defendants-appellants posting, within ten (10) days of
the date of this order, an undertaking in the amount of $175 million dollars; (2)
permanently barring defendants Weisselberg and McConney from serving in the
financial control function of any New York corporation or similar business entity; (3)
barring defendants Donald J. Trump, Weisselberg and McConney from serving as an
officer or director of any New York corporation for three years; (4) barring defendant
Donald J. Trump and the corporate defendants from applying for loans from New York
financial institutions for three years; and (5) barring defendants Donald Trump, Jr. and
Eric Trump from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation in New
York for two years. The aforesaid stay is conditioned on defendants-appellants
perfecting the appeals for the September 2024 Term of this Court. The motion is
otherwise denied, including to the extent it seeks a stay of enforcement of portions of the
judgment (1) extending and enhancing the role of the Monitor and (2) directing the
installation of an Independent Director of Compliance.”

Will “Euphoria” Season 3 Ever Happen? Expensive Stars, No Scripts May Make It Impossible

0

Will “Euphoria” season three ever happen?

The saga about troubled high school kids may never happen at this point. HBO says it’s delayed, which may be a nice way of saying, “It can’t be done.”

There are reports that the whole storyline for Season three was scrapped, which makes sense for a lot of reasons.

“HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” the network said in a statement. “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”

No kidding on in-demand cast. Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney have all become huge stars since Season Two. Colman Domingo was nominated for an Oscar. Would this gang really come back to HBO for their old salaries?

Then there’s the problem of Angus Cloud having died in the interim.

By the time “Euphoria” came back, there would have to be a significant time jump to make the characters adults in their mid 20s. They certainly couldn’t be in high school or even college at this point. It’s almost time for a series reunion show!

Maybe creator Sam Levinson should just do one final movie — two hours — and let this thing go. In its moment, it was historic. I don’t think it will work as an X rated “Knots Landing,” but you never know.

Trump Claims Mar-a-Lago Worth Up to $180 Million, Quotes Bible as He Awaits 2 Key Court Decisions

0

Donald Trump says on his social media that Mar-a-Lago is worth between $90 million and $180 million.

He’s also re-posting a quote from the Bible, even though he never goes to church and is a godless entity.

This all comes as Trump sits in a New York courtroom waiting to hear if his Stormy Daniels trial will be postponed. He’s always waiting to hear if New York Attorney General Letitia James is going to seize his properties to pay his $454 million judgement in his fraud case. He can’t raise the money to pay the judgement with a bond.

Trump wrote on Truth Social:

“People must continue to speak of, and remember, that the Engoron number of $450,000,000 for doing absolutely NOTHING WRONG is a big part of the crime being perpetrated against me by Crooked Joe Biden and his political Hacks and Thugs. Engoron’s fraudulent valuation of Mar-a-Lago for $18,000,000, when it is worth 50 to 100 times that amount, is another piece of the Election Interference HOAX. It’s all a giant and totally illegal Witch Hunt against Biden’s Political Opponent!”

He added: “Crooked Pols!!! There should be no FINE. Did nothing wrong! Why should I be forced to sell my “babies” because a CORRUPT NEW YORK JUDGE & A.G. SET A FAKE AND RIDICULOUS NUMBER. “TAKE HIS CASH SO THAT HE CAN’T USE IT TO DEFEAT HIS POLITICAL OPPONENT, CROOKED JOE BIDEN.” ELECTION INTERFERENCE, ALL HEADED UP BY THE WHITE HOUSE – THIS INCLUDES FANI AND THE CORRUPT MANHATTAN D.A. BRAGG ADMITTED THERE WAS NO CRIME, WAS MORTIFIED BY WHAT MARK POMERANTZ DID – AND HE SHOULD BE. WITCH HUNT!”

Trump did re-post a tweet from a fan from the Bible.

“They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, And fought against me without a cause. In return for my love they are my accusers,But I give myself to prayer.”

He actually doesn’t have a prayer.

Opinion: Strong Feeling How “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Ending Will Echo “Seinfeld” Prison Disaster

0

We’ve just finished episode 8 of the final season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” There are only 2 episodes left. How will this 22 year old show end?

I have an idea now. The two themes of this season have been Larry’s arrest and pending court date in Atlanta; and several people asking him about the final episode of “Seinfeld.”

That episode, which is universally disliked, had Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer wind up going to prison for being bad people. The episode was so bad that several seasons ago, “Curb” addressed it and tried to make it right.

Tonight, we saw Larry’s lawyer stage a mock trial to give Larry the chance to work out his testimony. It was a failure, and Larry was found guilty. But even Susie warned him about a real trial that might leave him in jail.

So I think we’re headed back to Atlanta for the trial in which Larry is accused of giving water to a voter waiting on line. I do think the trial will go badly. The possible ending: convicted Larry carted off to jail.

Will that be the end? Or will there be a last minute twist? Will any of the Seinfeld cast show up? Who will say, You deserve this after the Seinfeld ending?

Tonight’s show was like a classic “Curb,” not vulgar, very much written carefully so all the plot points lined up. The main story was about Richard Lewis buying an old car that had a bad smell. Sound familiar? Remember the smell in Jerry’s car was so bad he tried to trade it in? We’re coming full circle. Special guest Steve Buscemi should have been on “Curb” years ago.

Michael Jackson’s Mother Unlikely Legal Opponent for Estate: Sources Say She’s Being “Encouraged” by Kids Who Need Money

0

Katherine Jackson, Michael’s 93 year old mother, has been in the news lately. She’s been trying to stop Michael’s estate from selling a half ownership in his MJJ Music for $600 million d to Sony.

Having lost the case, she wants to fund an appeal and have the estate pay her lgal bills, according to reports. The Estate refuses. Meantime, the sale is going through.

This weekend it was announced that her only ally in the case, grandson Prince Michael II aka Blanket or Biji, was no longer on her side. Michael’s two other kids are out of it, as well.

So what’s going on? Katherine Jackson’s name may be on the papers, but she’s not actually trying to stop the sale of her own volition. Sources tell me she’s being “encouraged” by her eldest daughter, Rebbie, and son, Randy. Since none of Michael’s siblings are heirs to the estate, when their mother dies the siblings are out of luck for money.

“Katherine wants to leave her kids money,” says a source. “But she doesn’t have any.” Indeed, the estate pays all her other expenses, including use of a grand estate in Calabasas, California. Rebbie — whose husband died several years ago — lives with her full time and enjoys those benefits. Randy is said to be working for sister, Janet, but has always lurked in the background.

Not all the Jackson siblings are involved in this mess. Jermaine, for example, is remaining silent. His son, Jafaar, is starring as Michael in the new biopic, so he’s not going to rock the boat. Jermaine also remains out of the country, I’m told. Jackie Jackson joined the estate some time ago. Janet has her own money, obviously. Tito Jackson is said to be spending his time in Oklahoma pursuing business interests.

Michael — who died in 2009 –cdid not want his brothers and sisters to get any part of his estate, which is now worth hundreds of millions. The Estate — lawyer John Branca and record executive John McClain — have turned what was a bankrupt business at Michael’s death into a huge money making venture, with the film, a hit Broadway show, a Las Vegas show, and increased sales of records.

The Sony deal — which means MJJ Publishing is valued at $1.2 billion — is not the Beatles catalog. It consists of songs Michael wrote, and others that he bought over the years by artists like Sly & the Family Stone as well as hits written or performed by Jerry Lee Lewis, Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, Ray Charles, Percy Sledge, Dion and others.

What will happen? The deal is going through, Michael’s heirs — his children — will benefit. His siblings will not. Are there more lawsuits in the future? Without a doubt.

Banana Republic Report: Trump Says Thrilled to Be Getting Award from His Own Golf Club

0

Donald Trump is certainly not self-aware.

On the eve of possibly losing a massive amount of real estate in his New York fraud case, the loser business man — found guilty of sexual assault and disparagement of his victim — is boasting like a fascist dictator in a parody.

Trump posted to his social media that he’s thrilled to be at his own golf club and getting an award. LOL. You cannot make this up.

Trump actually writes: ” It is my great honor to be at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach tonight, AWARDS NIGHT, to receive THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY & THE SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY. I WON BOTH! A large and golfing talented membership, a GREAT and difficult course, made the play very exciting. The qualifying and match play was amazing. A large and distinguished group will be there tonight. Very exciting, thank you!!!”

Are the people who play with him and attend these events actually this stupid? He’s like the head of his own banana republic. The Gap is in his mind.

Beatle Bonanza: “Layla” Painting Sells for $1.9 Mil at $3 Mil Cashout Auction of Pattie Boyd Harrison Clapton

0

I have nothing but admiration for Pattie Boyd Harrison Clapton.

On Thursday at an auction at Christie’s in London she realized over $3 million for her collection of rock and roll memorabilia.

Chief item was the original painting that was used for the cover of Derek and the Dominos’ “Layla and Assorted Love Songs” album. La Jeune Fille au Bouquet, circa 1950-55, painted by Emile Théodore Frandsen de Schomberg, sold for $1.976 million.

Eric Clapton bought the painting from the artist’s son in 1970, a year after he died. In the late 70s, Clapton gave it to George Harrison, possibly in exchange for Pattie, who divorced Harrison for Clapton. Then a decade later, Harrison gave the painting to Pattie. Did he know how much it would be worth? I’ll bet he did. And he probably didn’t want it, since “Layla” was all about Boyd while she and Clapton were having their affair.

The rest of the auction was all personal items involving Boyd’s two ex husbands and the Beatles including jewelry and correspondence. A telegram from Eric to Pattie in 1970 — when she was married to George — reads “DOES YOUR SILENCE MEAN BEGONE?” It sold for $5,000. (Obviously, her silence did not mean that. It meant, All things must pass.)

We learn from Eric’s letters and cards that he called his wife “Nelly” or “Nell.” There was plenty of signed correspondence, even a Clapton sculpture that sold for nearly $10,000. Pattie just turned 80 years old, so it was the right time to cash out. She represents a generation of rock legend wives and girlfriends who, if they were smart enough to keep all their gifts and minutiae, have big pay days coming for being muses without credit.

PS Everything worked out for George Harrison. He married Olivia Trinidad in 1978, had a son Dhani, and they have tended his legacy with the utmost respect. Pattie has been married to her partner, Rod Weston, since 2015. They’ve been together since 1991. Clapton has been married for 22 years. He has four daughters.

New Board Game “Hollywood 1947” Trivializes Devastating Communist Blacklist That Destroyed Lives: Holocaust Next?

0

This sounds like something from “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Someone has actually made a board game mocking the devastating Hollywood communist blacklist perpetrated by Senator Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn. The creators are named Travis Hancock and Sarah Keele and the company is called Facade Games. (This is real, not a joke, “Hollywood 1947” can be purchased on Amazon for home entertainment.)

The Blacklist ruined thousands of lives in Hollywood from 1947 to the mid 1950s. The House UnAmerican Activities Committee dragged actors, directors, etc in front of Congress to determine if they were Communists — and to name others who might be.

The result was the immediate destruction of careers. Screenwriters were forced to use pseudonyms on their scripts, or have “fronts” (as seen in the film “The Front” with Woody Allen). Actors were barred from being in films, turning to theater or the early TV business centered in New York. Many lost their livelihoods.

Some of the best known people on the Blacklist were actress Lee Grant, 98, who went on to win an Oscar, and writer Dalton Trumbo, more recently portrayed by Bryan Cranston in a biopic.

What are these game makers thinking? What’s next, the Holocaust?

The description reads: “Hollywood 1947 is a social deduction game. You must never show your cards or loyalty to anyone, but you may say whatever you’d like about the cards you put into a movie, or about your true allegiance. Open discussion about which cards were added into a movie is encouraged. However, if you are a Communist or the Rising Star, lying will often help you accomplish your goals since the majority of players will be Patriots.

“In the game each player will secretly be a Patriot, Communist, or Rising Star. Each round every player will have a unique Job to perform (such as the Screenwriter, Gaffer, Director, Actor, Editor, etc). These jobs will affect what kind of movie is getting made that round, what cards are in players’ hands, and who will receive special information. Players can choose to skip their jobs to instead re-roll any two of the dice in the game. At the end of each round the players with stars showing on their dice will get to add a card into the movie.”

It’s unclear if there are cards that read “Lose your home,” “go to jail,” or “kill yourself.”

I can only think of the great people who lost their careers including Zero Mostel (only allowed back in 1968 with “The Producers”), theater legends Morris Carnovsky and Phoebe Brand, Lillian Hellman, Dashiell Hammett, Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin — people whose work is revered now, who lost more than decade of their lives.

This isn’t funny, it’s shameful to turn people’s real lives into a board game. Yikes.

Disney Pixar Releases Animated “Luca” to Theaters 3 Years After Streaming, and Makes Just $550,000

0

Disney/Pixar released “Luca” to theaters this weekend. The audience was, let’s say, unimpressed.

Animated “Luca” was originally streamed in 2021 and not put in theaters. They thought this would help launch Disney Plus. Since streaming numbers are not available, no one knows what happened.

But we know what happened now. “Luca” made just $550,000. So much for that.

Disney/Pixar recently did the same thing with two other animated films. The results were just as bad. The great film, “Soul,” which won two Oscars, took in just under $1 million. “Turning Red” came in at $1.3 million. Both of those had already been available on Disney Plus for some time.

Lesson learned? Who knows?
