Johnny Rotten is Back, with A Single About US General Stonewall Jackson

1

Johnny Rotten is back. The leader of the Sex Pistols is returning to the US with his other group, the less political Public Image Ltd. Their new album, “This is Public Image,” hits the US in October. The first single is called “Out of the Woods.” Its unlikely subject: famed US general Stonewall Jackson. From the press release: “is about Stonewall Jackson, one of America’s greatest generals and a tactical genius who, against overwhelming odds, helped win the battle of Chancellorsville in the War of Southern Independence.”

Really, I can’t make this stuff up.

Adele Closes in on 10 Million Copies Sold for “21” Album

2

Adele is bracing for a couple of big milestones this fall. She’s pregnant, and maybe due in a month to six weeks. That’s lovely. But the other news is that her ubiquitous “21” album is closing in 10 million units sold in the United States. So far she’s sold 9.7 million copies. That leaves just 300,000 to go. The way she’s going, all that will take is 10 to 12 weeks. Although with Adele, you never know–there could be another sudden upswing in sales. This week. “21” sold 25, 648 copies according to www.hitsdailydouble.com, and finished 9th for the week. Meanwhile, everyone waits–not just for the baby and the 10 mil mark– but to see if Adele has the theme song for the James Bond movie “Skyfall.” As much as everyone anticipates a new James Bond film, the theme song is incredibly important. Since recent themes from Alicia Keys and others have been disappointments, an Adele track is much desired!

Michael Strahan as Kelly Co-Host: He Put L.A. Beach House on Market Last Week

1

What did Michael Strahan know and when did he know it? Strahan, who lives in Los Angeles, put his main home up for sale last January, a month before his first guest shot as Kelly Ripa’s co-host. He and fiancee Nicole Murphy kept their beach house in Hermosa Beach, California. But a few days before the “Live” rumblings started to go wild, Strahan and Murphy put that house on the market, as well. When I first wrote about the Kelly sweepstakes on July 5th, Strahan was tipped to me as the second guy on the show’s wish list. He was just finishing a five day srint as guest host. He’d come in February, March, and May, each time impressing everyone. Interestingly, his first guest host stint wasn’t until February 7th–by then, a lot of different candidates had already tried their hand at sitting in Regis Philbin’s old chair. Strahan is not replacing Regis–no one can do that. He’s simply the new co-host. Will he tell Regis like stories? If he talks about Eddie Murphy, whose ex wife he will marry, presumably in a Michael Gelman inspired fantasy wedding next February.

Tony Scott Didn’t Have Brain Cancer: Strike 4 for ABC News

3

It hasn’t been a good summer for ABC News. First, they aired a report linking the Aurora, Colorado shooter with the Tea Party. It wasn’t true. That was strike one. Strike three–I’m jumping ahead on purpose–was the announcement that director Tony Scott, who committed suicide, had been suffering from brain cancer. They took the story from TMZ.com, not usually considered a serious news source. This afternoon a source close to Scott, who knew him well, says it’s not true. “There was nothing wrong with him. He didn’t have brain cancer.” The source could not say if Scott was taking anti-depressants or any other drugs that might have caused him to drive up on a bridge where he’d shot movies and jump to his death. But brain cancer: no.

Strike two, I think, was ABC sending a producer and camera crew to Tucson in July to interview Katherine Jackson. She was at a spa, and thought to have been kidnapped by some of her adult children. Here’s what happened: they agreed to let Mrs. Jackson speak from a prepared text without answering any questions. It was a total embarrassment. She was surrounded by Janet, Jermaine and Rebbie Jackson, her kids who spirited her to the spa when she was supposed to be somewhere else. This was serious: Mrs. Jackson was the legal guardian for three grandchildren under the age of 18. Because she was “missing.” she lost temporary guardianship. While the interview was being conducted, her own lawyer–who’d come to Tucson to see her–was told he couldn’t. And he was lied to, told that she had no phone.

Strike four: “Nightline” has been moved to 12:35am, where it will  die a sad death. Past ABC presidents David Westin and Roone Arledge would never let that happen. But now “Nightline” is being replaced by Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show. News has never been sacrosanct at ABC. “Good Morning America” comes from the entertainment division. They often “license” material as a way of paying interview subjects. But “Nightline” — Ted Koppel must be very depressed today.

More importantly, Tony Scott didn’t have brain cancer. ABC relied on TMZ, which itself regularly lifts things from other sites based on a hunch. They make outlandish statements, then move on. If they’re wrong, well, their readership has short memories and low standards. Any way, “brain cancer” sounded like a plausible reason for suicide. Too bad it wasn’t actually true.

Dee Snider of Twisted Sister Tells Paul Ryan to Stop Using His Song

1

Dee Snider of Twisted Sister just sent this out:
“It was brought to the attention of  the management today that Paul Ryan has been using tour client Dee Snider’s composition “We’re Not Gonna Take It” in his political campaign to become the Vice President of The United States of America. Dee does not support Paul Ryan. Accordingly,  Dee has released this statement to Benjy Sarlin, campaign reporter for TPM  in Washington, DC:
I emphatically denounce Paul Ryan’s use of my song “Were Not Gonna Take It” as recorded by my band Twisted Sister. There is almost nothing on which I  agree with Paul Ryan, except perhaps the use of the P90X.
Dee Snider”

Taylor Swift Will Never Ever Be Allowed at A Kennedy Wedding Again

4

Maybe Taylor Swift, 22, is just as immature as her high school boyfriend, Conor Kennedy, 18. The Boston Herald reports that Conor’s aunt, Vicki Kennedy, asked him not to bring the country singer to a family wedding in Boston this past weekend. They ignored this, and went anyway. Vicki Kennedy wasn’t happy. Conor, by the way, is starting his JUNIOR year of high school next week, not senior. Apparently, he’s two years behind in school. He lost his mother four months ago. Is there any parenting going on here? Or is this just a free-for-all? Vicki Kennedy at least took a stand. http://bostonherald.com/track/inside_track/view/20220822inside_track_headline/srvc=home&position=6

PS The house in the Kennedy compound was not sold to Swift, after all, but to a Wall Street guy. http://www.showbiz411.com/2012/08/15/taylor-swift-and-the-kennedys-a-weird-yet-plausible-explanation

Taylor has the biggest selling downloaded single for a female singer this week, the second biggest ever for anyone of any sex. The actual biggest selling single of all time, is “White Christmas,” by Bing Crosby. It’s sold 50 million copies since 1942.

Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour” Finally Coming to DVD, BluRay

2

Is it really happening? The Beatles’ film “Magical Mystery Tour” is finally coming to DVD and BluRay in proper condition. There’s also a theatrical release on September 27th. “MMT” follows a restored “Yellow Submarine.” What’s next? Can we dream: “Let it Be”? OMG. Anyway, you can read all this beatles.com or here:

The Beatles’ Classic 1967 Feature Film Restored For Worldwide DVD and Blu-Ray Release on October 8th

In September 1967, The Beatles loaded a film crew onto a bus along with friends, family and cast and headed west on the A30 out of London to make their third film, this time conceived and directed by The Beatles themselves.

“Paul said, ‘Look I’ve got this idea’ and we said ‘great!’ and all he had was this circle and a little dot on the top – that’s where we started.” (Ringo)

In the wake of the extraordinary impact of the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album and the One World satellite broadcast of All You Need Is Love, The Beatles devised, wrote and directed their third film, Magical Mystery Tour, a dreamlike story of a coach day trip to the seaside.

The film features a fabulous supporting cast of character actors and performers, (including Ivor Cutler, Victor Spinetti, Jessie Robins, Nat Jackley, Derek Royle, and the inimitable Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band).

Apple Films have fully restored the long out-of-print, classic feature film for October 8th release worldwide (October 9th in North America) on DVD and Blu-ray with a remixed soundtrack (5.1 and stereo) and special features.

A special, boxed deluxe edition will also be available, and, for the first time ever, there will be a limited theatrical release from September 27th.

This new release also feature three new edits of some of the song performances, as well as scenes that were cut out of the original film.

Gwyneth Paltrow Producing All Star, All Network Stand up to Cancer

0

Oscar winning multi tasking Gwyneth Paltrow is producing the bi annual “Stand Up To Cancer” with Joel Gallen on September 7th. This is the show that runs on every network at 8pm that night, commercial free. Among the stars they just announced are Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Michael Douglas, Jessica Biel, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Seth Rogen, Emma Stone, Katie Couric, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Alicia Keys and Tim McGraw. Also appearing will be Simon Baker, Jordana Brewster, Diem Brown, Dana Delany, Chelsea Handler, Marg Helgenberger, Rashida Jones, Minka Kelly, Joe Manganiello, Jillian Michaels, Masi Oka, Ana Maria Polo, and Alison Sweeney. It’s a worthy cause, with all proceeds going to cancer research. Beloved producer Laura Ziskin, who died last year after a brave battle with breast cancer, produced the first two “Stand up to Cancer” specials. Gwyneth’s equally beloved dad, Bruce Paltrow, who gave us “St. Elsewhere,” succumbed to cancer a few years ago. Katie Couric is the founder of this project, in memory of her husband Jay Monahan.

“The Master” Sneaks More Screenings at 70 MM Theaters Around Country

1

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” screened tonight in San Francisco and in Philadelphia. PTA and wife Maya Rudolph of “Saturday Night Live” fame (also daughter of the late great singer Minnie Riperton) were in attendance at the former. “The Master” also screened this morning in New York, after having screened three or four times in NYC already. PTA is taking it to any 70 MM theatres he can find, with good reason: the movie is visually stunning.

And while official reviews are being embargoed until next week, I can tell you this: “The Master” is a stunner. And while it doesn’t address Scientology head on–it is, after all, a work of fiction that ultimately has to address its own issues–Tom Cruise, John Travolta and the like will not be jumping for joy on couches. Meanwhile, “The Master” shows at Venice and Toronto, then opens the fall Oscar season with a bang on September 14th. More on this unusual movie as developments warrant.

Taylor Swift Sets Record for Selling Most Crap in One Week to Teens

7

Taylor Swift Kennedy–er, not yet exactly– set a record last week. She sold the second highest number of digital singles so far, and the most for a female ever. The godawful “I’m Never Going to Write a Song about Anything Other than a Celebrity Break Up” sold 623,000 copies through digital downloading services. Uh wait, the song is called “I Am Never Getting Back Together with You” or something. It follows all her other songs with the exact same theme.

Swift is 22. She’s dating HIGH SCHOOL senior–yes he returns to high school next week– Conor Kennedy, age 18. By the time she was 22, Carole King had written “The LocoMotion,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “Chains,” and “He Don’t Love You Like I Love You.” By the time they were 22, John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote–like– everything. Mozart wrote “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” when he was 5. I can’t believe anyone likes that stupid “Getting Back Together” song so much. But the Kennedy publicity has been off the wall. Conor should ask for a cut of sales.

Justin Bieber may now take a look through the Kennedy cousins to see if there’s anything there for him.
