Whitney Houston Remembered at Clive Davis’s All Star Pre Grammy Bash

0

Whitney Houston was not out of anyone’s memory on Saturday night. Her death, exactly one year ago, was remembered at the annual Clive Davis pre-Grammy dinner at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Last year Whitney died a couple of hours before the party was set to begin, and it went on, solemnly.

Last night, Davis celebrated Whitney’s by showing a rare 20 year old clip of her singing “All The Man I Need” from a performance for soldiers. Whitney’s brother Gary and sister in law Pat were in the audience. And upstairs the hotel posted a guard in front of the room where Whitney died. The number has been removed from the door. And if anyone asks, the reply is that it’s a storage room.

Otherwise the annual pre Grammy dinner was a rousing success, with a much lighter atmosphere than last year, and supercharged with A listers galore in the audience and top notch talent on stage that included Usher, Miguel, The Lumineers, Emeli Sande (pictured), Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye, Jennifer Hudson and the absolutely amazing Gladys Knight.

I had the pleasure of sitting with Joni Mitchell for most of the show. Joni loved Emeli Sande. “She’s a real artist.” When Usher sang she said, “Now, he’s the shit.” She said of Sting: “He’s the child James Taylor and I never had.” She thought Miguel was “hot” and danced to Knight doing “Midnight Train to Georgia.” Our friend, famed record producer Richard Perry, said: “I’ve never seen Joni have so much fun.” She was among the last to leave the ballroom when the show ended.

Among the guests: Sting and Trudie Styler, Joni Mitchell, Johnny Depp, Jennifer Hudson–who performed, plus Larry and Shaun King, Sean Diddy Combs, Ron Burkle, Brandy, Joan Collins and husband Percy–Jackie Collins, she said, was home with the flu, plus Melanie Griffith who came with pal Nikki Haskell–Antonio Banderas is in Spain on business. Plus, of course, the great Quincy Jones, producer Richard Perry, singer Anthony Hamilton, and John Mayer with girlfriend Katy Perry. The pair cut a smashing figure in white tie for Mayer and a stunning white beaded gown for Perry.

Davis was introduced by CBS chief Les Moonves, who came with wife Julie Chen. ABC News’s Cynthia McFadden was at what I called “the broadcaster’s table” along with Gayle King. I actually met Carly Rae Jepsen, the “Call Me Maybe” girl.” She was delightful. Joan Rivers and daughter Melissa were there, as was Kathy Griffin. Joan reached over the little wall that separated her from the table below, and asked hot singer Emili Sande if she could pass the salt. She did!

The table configurations were all interesting. Imagine Joni Mitchell seated with Alice Cooper and Paul Stanley from KISS. Yes, indeed. With Brandy adjacen to them. It’s that kind of thing that makes the night interesting. Former Motown leader and producer Suzanne dePasse was seated with Clarence Avant, another great R&B music label legend, and BET’s Debra Lee. And so on. I ran into Kelsey Grammer and wife Kate, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, most of Earth Wind and Fire, and some of BoyzIIMen.

Also: the great Peter Asher, Warner Music Group owner and Russian billionaire Len Blavatnik, Sony Music chief Doug Morris, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, and Sony ATV Music Publishing giant Marty Bandier with beautiful wife Dorothy. Oh yes, and Wiz Kalifa, Elle Varner, Tyra Banks (just gorgeous), Sylvia Rhone, Brett Ratner, actor Scott Speedman, songwriter extraordinaire Diane Warren, and eminent trumpeteer Chris Botti.

Did I mention that people were falling over themselves to meet either Magic Johnson or San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick? The latter is a lot bigger than he looked on TV, by the way, and cleaned up nicely in a suit and tie. I said, “You were in the Super Bowl. It doesn’t matter if you won.” He replied, sweetly: “Yes, it does.”

There was a soulful tribute to L.A. Reid as  an industry icon, with speeches from Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Doug Morris, and the Usher performance that wowed the crowd. Earlier in the day I sat through Usher’s rehearsal in the empty ballroom. I can tell you he does not lip synch. What a voice!

There were other parties around town on Saturday night, and I’m sure they were all fine. But Clive’s dinner remains the most coveted invite in Hollywood save for the Vanity Fair Oscar party. And I think even Whitney would have approved of this night overcoming the agony of last year with this rousing celebration of music, music music. And really, as long as I live I will never forget Joni Mitchell doing the train dance to “Midnight Train to Georgia.”

If you had asked me in in 1973, when i was sixteen and that song was on the radio and Joni was hotter than Taylor Swift, and Clive was having hit after hit at Columbia Records, if any of this would happen 40 years or so hence, I would have asked what you were smoking. But it’s like that every year at Clive’s party.

PS On a sadder note from the music biz family: condolences to Seymour Stein, my friend who founded Sire Records, discovered Madonna, the Ramones, etc. His eldest daughter, Samantha, also a friend, a mother, a sister and a lovely human being, succumbed to brain cancer on Friday after a 21 month battle. It was only three years ago that Samantha’s brilliant mother, Linda Stein, was killed in a now infamous New York crime. They will each be missed tremendously. Samantha was a gem. Please send love and prayers to Seymour and his daughter Mandy.

Springsteen on Musicians: “We Are A Brother and Sisterhood of Magical F-Ups”

0

Bruce Springsteen, aided by producer David Foster, waded out into the dinner audience of around 3000 people last night at the L.A. Convention Center and auctioned off a Fender guitar for $250,000 at the annual MusiCares charity dinner. Springsteen, honoree as Person of the Year, first got a clutch of rock stars to sign the high-polished instrument including Sting, Neil Young, Katy Perry, and Elton John. Then he added 1 hour personal guitar lesson and lasagna made by his 87 year old mother, who took a bow from her table.

Tracy Powell, who said she was a mom from Maryland but was born in New Jersey, and was seated in the back half of the cavernous ballroom, shimmied up the Boss in a glittery mini skirt and bought the package for a quarter of a million dollars. And that was before almost two dozen A list musicians, including Springsteen himself and members of the E Street Band, took the stage and sang Bruce’s songs in a knockout two hour show.

Powell’s winning bid also got her a ride in the sidecar of Springsteen’s Harley Davidson, eight tickets and backstage passes to an E Street Band show plus a private tour conducted by the Boss.

Springsteen was accompanied to the show by his wife Patti Scialfa, plus his daughter, mother and cousins, a married couple who he later said “helped us raise our kids.”

They just added to the buzz of the high energy crowd. And wow–what a group! With Jon Stewart as emcee, the annual MusiCares dinner was a memorable one. Although it lacked much in the way of R&B it still had a lot of soul and, curiously, quite a bit of country and blues. There were significant standing ovations for everyone from Sting, who rocked to perfection a muscular “Lonesome Day” to Jackson Browne’s haunting “American Skin (41 Shots).”

The performances ranged from Elton John’s blistering “Streets of Philadelphia” to Neil Young– complete with cheerleades– on “Born in the USA,” Mavis Staples and Zac Brown chanting “My City in Ruins,” and John Legend serenading the audience with “Dancing in the Dark” from a revolving platform in the center of the room. Spanish star Juanes sang “Hungry Heart” bilingually, and Tom Morello added his crazily magnificent guitar to several numbers.

A highlight: Patti Smith singing her famed 1978 hit collaboration with Springsteen, “Because the Night,” which she dedicated to her late husband Fred “Sonic” Smih and to Bruce. Springsteen said later, “Patti, it’s your song.” He added: “I play it almost every night.”

In the audience: Trudie Styler, David Furnish, Bonnie Raitt, Katy Perry, directors Cameron Crowe and J.J. Abrams, celebs like Tom Brokaw, Sean Penn, John Stamos, Rita Wilson, Jimmy Jam Harris, Kathy Griffin, Sela Ward, Denise Rich, Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O’Brien, Les Moonves and Julie Chen, plus E Street Band members Nils Lofgren, Garry Tallent, Max Weinberg and Jake Clemons along with Scialfa.

Springsteen spoke eloquently, and with a lot of humor as always, He is one of the great speechifiers. He said of the assembled musicians, “We are a brother and sisterhood of magical fuck-ups.”

MusiCares rundown: Adam Raised a Cain [Alabama Shakes] Because the Night [Patti Smith] Atlantic City [Ben Harper, Natalie Maines, Charlie Musselwhite] American Land [Ken Casey] My City of Ruins [Zac Brown, Mavis Staples] I’m on Fire [Mumford & Sons] American Skin (41 Shots) [Jackson Browne, Tom Morello] My Hometown [Emmylou Harris] One Step Up [Kenny Chesney] Streets of Philadelphia [Elton John] Hungry Heart [Juanes] Tougher Than the Rest [Faith Hill, Tim McGraw] The Ghost of Tom Joad [Jim James, Tom Morello] Dancing in the Dark [John Legend] Lonesome Day [Sting] Born in the U.S.A. [Neil Young & Crazy Horse]
Springsteen: with Jake Clemons, Nils Lofgren, Patti Scialfa We Take Care of Our Own Death to My Hometown [with Tom Morello] Thunder Road [with Roy Bittan, Morello, Garry Tallent, Max Weinberg] Born to Run [with Bittan, Morello, Tallent, Weinberg] Glory Days [with all]

“Silver Linings Playbook” Meets Joe Biden

0

“Silver Linings Playbook” writer-director David O. Russell missed the Writers Guild panel in Hollywood last night for a good reason. He was in Washington, DC on Thursday, visiting Vice President Joe Biden with his star, Bradley Cooper. They were there to discuss programs and tolerance for mental health issues. “Silver Linings” continues to go nuts at the box office.

Oscar First: Shirley Bassey Bringing “Goldfinger” to Show

6

Okay, this is so cool: Dame Shirley Bassey will be performing “Goldfinger” on the Oscars. For some reason, she’s never been on the Academy Awards show. But this is part of the James Bond 50th anniversary tribute.

Bassey will join Adele, who will sing her James Bond theme, “Skyfall,” the fourth Bond song ever nominated for an Oscar and possibly the first to win the prize . I mean, come on, this plus Barbra Streisand, the movie musicals tribute– it’s going to be a great night. Adele, Barbra, Shirley–a diva trifecta!

“We are thrilled to welcome the legendary Dame Shirley Bassey to our Oscar show,” Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a statement. “Her association with film music is world renowned and we are proud that she will be making her first Oscar appearance on our telecast.”

Who’s next? Paul McCartney? Carly Simon? Sheena Easton? Rita Coolidge? Duran Duran?

Meantime, Walter Ross has been announced as the conducted of the Oscar orchestra. And you know Rob Ashford is doing choreography. Announced presenters include Meryl Streep, Jean DuJardin, Octavia Spencer, Christopher Plummer, the cast of “The Avengers” and Daniel Radcliffe. Of course, Seth MacFarlane is hosting.

I hope the Oscar show is four hours long and comes with a pillow, blanket, and snacks. Why not? This is shaping up as the all time Oscar blow out. There are so many great announcements from the Academy, I keep expecting one that the show will be in 3D.

PS Bassey could also sing “Diamonds Are Forever.” Wowza!

Movie Awards: SAG Claims Next January 18th, A Week Early

0

Soon the Oscars will have to be given out as the movies open. This just in: The Screen Actors Guild declared this morning that the 2014 SAG Awards will be presented a week early next year–Saturday, January 18th. Come on, really?

Ordinarily the SAGs would have occurred on January 25th. But all these awards shows want to be first. First! So the SAGs will now come on the first Saturday of the Sundance Film Festival. Why not complicate everything, I say?

So based on this, the Golden Globes have to be on Sunday, January 12th. The Oscar nominations would be announced on Thursday January 9th. And so on. The actual Oscars, under the present schedule, would be on February 22nd. But maybe now they’ll be earlier.

Maybe everything should be on the same day– Awards Day! The audience can be seated in one theater on New Year’s Day, and the different awards groups can have 30 minutes apiece at the podium.

Superstar Hitmaker Clive Davis: “I’m Still a Student of Music”

1

Clive Davis is rocking Grammy weekend in silver Prada sneakers. Last night music industry Bible Billboard–beautifully redesigned and a print-must-read–honored with the Visionary award at a swanky cocktail party at the Redbury Hotel. Universal Music chief Lucian Grange was also honored at the event as the number 1 Power Player in the business.

Yesterday afternoon Clive presided over press calls with Grammy nominated singer songwriter Miguel in preparation for his annual gala on Saturday night. Usher, Patti Smith, The Lumineers, and — shhh–maybe Bruno Mars– and the totally amazing Gladys Knight are rumored to be joining Miguel for historic performances at the Beverly Hilton Hotel ballroom.. Plus the usual raft of A list stars will make Davis’s dinner and show traditionally the most glamorous party.

If all this weren’t enough, Clive is releasing his 600 page autobiography, called “The Soundtrack of My Life,” on Februry 19th. The book is tightly under wraps until that day, but Billboard does have a terrific excerpt this week about Davis’s days working with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Clive is also on the Billboard cover–and as editor Bill Werde told me, “It’s the best cover we’ve ever done.” I agree!

Our LEAH SYDNEY caught Clive yesterday with Miguel for a private chat:

Leah- How do you feel about  tomorrow night?

Clive-  “I get as excited as the first. I’m very excited.”

Leah-Snazzy silver sneakers Clive!

Clive-  “They’re Prada sneakers.  Not ordinary sneakers.  They’re comfortable.  It’s the afternoon, I might even wear them at night. But I have different colors so I’m set.”

Leah-How has the party changed over the years?

Clive-  “The great thing about this party is that it hasn’t changed. The party celebrates music like no other party.  The party gets a guest list of people that attend from all walks of entertainment.  They’ll be actors, they’ll be heads of motion pictures studios.  Les Moonves chariman of CBS says it’s his favorite party of the year.  And of course the artists, they come back every year. And the executives. It’s a thrill because there is nothing like it.  They all have a great time.  Every year they come back and they say, ‘My God, it’s the best night ever.’  That makes me feel great.”

Leah-Who are you championing now?

Clive- “Miguel is not an artist that I’ve been involved professionally involved with.  But as a student of music, I feel that what Miguel is doing represents the best of the new music that is coming.  So that in choosing among  performers that might have broken through in the last year or two, I’m really happy to give him his featured spot.”

Leah-You’re still a student?

Clive-“Yes definitely.  Are you kidding?  I still bring home tapes on the music as it meets the chart every week to keep my ears current.  I’m looking for Jennifer Hudson, other artists like that.  If you do it, you pull yourself into it.  You take nothing for granted.”

Mr. Aerosmith Campaigns: Steven Tyler Will Testify Today

0

Rockers Steven Tyler and Mick Fleetwood–Hawaii residents who don’t want anymore telescopic snooping– will testify in Hawaii this morning about intrusive paparazzi. Fleetwood will tell the paps to “go their own way.” Tyler will advise them to “dream on” if they think they’re going to keep interfering in his life from a mile or more away. It’s about time, really.

This is from a press release this morning: Steven Tyler has gone from breaking the law, to making the law with his new proposed Senate bill.

Hawaii Senate Bill 465, also known as the Steven Tyler Act, would create a civil cause of action for “constructive invasion of privacy” in the state of Hawaii. Tyler initiated–and is a proponent and vocal supporter of–the bill and will appear with fellow Hawaii resident Mick Fleetwood on Friday, February 8 as the bill is presented in a Senate hearing at the State Capitol in Honolulu, Hawaii.  At this writing, the bill is being endorsed by 2/3 of the Senate.

The proposed bill (SB465) was modeled after the California Civil Code Section 1708.8, which was adopted by the California state legislature in 1998.  SB465 would add a cause of action for constructive invasion of privacy in addition to the current cause of action for physical invasion of privacy in Hawaii.  In the simplest terms, the proposed bill would provide a legal remedy for celebrities photographed while they are engaged in “personal or familial activity” and have a reasonable expectation of privacy.  This new law would go beyond the more traditional invasion of privacy, which generally requires a physical trespass, by imposing liability on people who use zoom telephonic lenses or other high tech audio devices to capture images or audio of public figures as they are in their homes, or other private places, and then turn around and sell those images or audio files.

The ideals of the proposed bill, SB465, are already enshrined in the constitution of the State of Hawaii. Article 1, Section 6 grants the people the right of privacy, not to be infringed without a “compelling state interest.” Article 1, Section 7 goes further stating the “right of the people to be secure in their persons…against invasions of privacy shall not be violated.”

“The paradise of Hawaii is a magnet for celebrities who just want a peaceful vacation,” TYLER says.  “As a person in the public eye, I know the paparazzi are there and we have to accept that.  But when they intrude into our private space, disregard our safety and the safety of others, that crosses a serious line that shouldn’t be ignored.”

STEVEN TYLER allowed his name to be used for the bill after it was drafted by his attorney and manager, Dina LaPolt, at his bequest and presented to Senator J. Kalani English (Hana, East & Upcountry Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe) for consideration.

Justin Timberlake Releases Cover Art, Track Listing for New Album

0

stippled-photoHere’s the cover art for Justin Timberlake’s “20/20 Experience.” You know, I’ve sat behind that thing for 50 years saying “1,” “2,” no back, whatever. And now, here it is. Justin must be blind as a bat too. Anyway, he will make a big splash performing on the Grammy Awards and then, later that night, at the Hollywood Palladium. Then he will announce a world tour beginning in late summer. There’s also a track listing for “20/20” which, I am  told, is not all R&B. There’s some straight up pop too. Let’s hope there’s a special version of “Suit and Tie” without Jay Z–not that we don’t love Jay Z, but it would be nice to hear that song on its own.

Track listing:

Pusher Love Girl

Suit & Tie

Don’t Hold The Wall

Strawberry Bubblegum

Tunnel Vision

Spaceship Coupe

That Girl

Let The Groove Get In

Mirrors

Jennifer Hudson, Anjelica Huston Can’t Save “Smash”: Second Season Premiere Tanks

0

I tried watching “Smash” last night. I watched as much of it as I could take. Apparently, I wasn’t alone. Most of the people who watched the Betty White special on NBC also tuned out as “Smash” smooshed along. Betty had about 6 million viewers at 8pm. “Smash” had 4.4 million at 9pm. Everything did better–“NCIS,” “New Girl,” “Vegas,” even “Raising Hope.” I even sampled “Mindy Kaling” for five minutes.

For the “Smash” return, they enlisted Jennifer Hudson to be in a faux Broadway musical, and she was simply outstanding. Returning as the lead character–the producer of a Broadway show– Anjelica Huston is a movie star–looking like Cleopatra who ate the canary. Debra Messing is a fave, too. “Smash” is pretty much over, I would think. A worthy experiment. But no one knew how to write a nighttime soap.

“Smash” has too many heroines, and no one to root for. I couldn’t figure out if Megan Hilty or Katharine McPhee was the star. (If you know, please email me.) The men are all foreign or gay or both, and very poorly defined as characters. Jack Davenport kept squinting — I thought he was trying to read the TelePrompter. The most hilarious part–and this is where I got out to look for a hockey game–was when McPhee discovered a waiter and a bartender in a restaurant had written the next great Broadway musical. Are you really kidding or what?

Then there was a kind of nod to the “Rebecca” scandal of last year–Huston’s producer character has been taking mysterious money–is it mob money or what? It was so out of character. And anyway, Huston was the Oscar winning star of “Prizzi’s Honor.” She’s too smart for that. It made no sense.

And the Devils beat the Rangers.

Josh Groban, Canadian Duo Lead Warner Brothers Records Revival

0

Warner Bros. Records is back. From the dead. Despite the yeoman efforts of the people who work there, WBR was kind of handcuffed during the Bronfman-Cohen era. Their stock plummeted, everyone was fired, and no new acts were developed. But good news! It looks like Warner Bros. Records, the label in the Warner Music Group that just never could get it together, is humming. Next week comes Josh Groban’s new album, “All that Echoes,”  will likely finish at number 1 next Monday with over 130,00 copies sold. The single, “Brave,” is a winner, too. Groban, a great guy, finally has a solid pop hit.

The label is also suddenly forward charging with Canadian duo Tegan and Sara. Their 13th album, an “overnight sensation” called “Heartthrob,” debuted this week on the charts at number 3. They’ve got a hit single called “Closer,” too. Today Warner’s announced it signed a group Skaters, and they have a hit called “I Wanna Dance But I Don’t Know How.” Warner Bros. Records languished for so long, it’s not funny. But it’s good to see them back in the game now that they’re owned by Len Blavatnik. Bravo! Can’t wait to hear what’s next.
