Stem Player Inventor Alex Klein Declines to Cut Ties with Kanye West: “He is an incredible artist and I’m a Ye fan,” Wants to Sell Shares in Company (UPDATED)

0

Alex Klein, the founder of Stem Player, declined to say he’d cut ties with Kanye West today in a Q&A on Discord.

Last year, West’s album “Donda 2” was included in the $200 Stem Player.

Klein said that West had not made an investment in his company, Kano Computing. He said he was against hate speech — I’m paraphrasing — but hedged when he was asked by people on Discord if he would cut ties. “I don’t believe in that,” Klein said.

“Ye is an incredible artist and I’m a Ye fan,” Klein said. “It’s very difficult to collaborate with someone who’s telling lies that resulted in your family members being killed,” Klein conceded. Would he work again with West, who he called “Ye” over and over during the hour plus discussion? “Never say never.”

Klein’s discussion with at least 200 people listening seemed naive to me. He’s afraid of making a definitive statement about West, whose antisemitic statements have caused many companies to sever their relationships with him. He did say that new devices from the company would not carry the Yeezy brand name.

“Donda 2,” however, will remain on the Stem Player, Klein says. “There’s nothing on it that’s antisemitic.”

But Klein would not commit to ending the relationship, and seemed to want to keep the door open to working with West should he somehow come around, apologize for offending a whole race of people and agree to work against hate speech.

So far West has not indicated any interest in this. I think Klein will have trouble getting new customers for his electronic products until he confronts this situation– especially if, as he says, he’s going to sell shares in the company possibly via crowdfunding.

A new Stem Player, without West’s music, and associated products will be available shortly. PS What is a Stem Player? It’s an audio device that lets you take music uploaded to it and reorganize it by vocals, music, etc. The new products include a mini projector.

What Klein said about Kanye West, whom he called “Ye” (promounce “Yay”)

from the transcript:

…”I mean you know I still care about Ye I don’t want him to I pray for you and I pray I pray that we can meet again in fellowship and and I’II pray that he is given a spirit of warmth and kindness that I know hes been given before and it’s given that the correct information because good engineering is about having correct information and acting upon it and mine is only as good as the information it receives but you know at the end of the day as long as what’s flowing through Ye is is hatred towards a particular ethnic group and if that’s such a major racial enough that focus of his work it’s gonna be very hard for us to collaborate creatively because that’s just not what I feel and we know we feel it’s a company…”

Bruce Springsteen Hits Number 1 on iTunes, Amazon with Sensational R&B Covers Album

0

Bruce Springsteen opens a new week of record releases at number 1!

Bruce’s “Only the Strong Survive,” a joyous collection of R&B covers, has made the top of the iTunes and Amazon charts this morning. It’s so much fun, and so heartfelt, you’ll be playing it over and over.

Of course, my favorite track is a cover of Dobie Gray’s “Soul Days” featuring the legendary Sam Moore. Sam, 87, is the singer of “Soul Man,” “Hold On I’m Coming” and dozens of other classics as the leader of Sam & Dave in the 60s. Since then, Sam has had an incredible career as many consider him the all time R&B singer, and just a great singer in any realm. He’s also the first artist ever to be featured this way on a Springsteen album. (He can be heard, too, on the William Bell cover of “I Found Another Lover.”

Bruce will be on Jimmy Fallon’s show next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and back again on Thanksgiving. I hope he sings this song!

Box Office: “Wakanda Forever” Has $28 Mil Preview Night, $1 Mil Less Than Last Big Marvel Movie, “Thor: Love and Thunder”

0

Wakanda is forever.

The much anticipated sequel to “Black Panther” took in a huge $28 million last night in previews.

Disney is hoping for more than $175 million for the whole weekend including last night. I think $150-$200 million is more likely. After all, “Thor Love and Thunder” — the last big Marvel release — opened to $29 million in previews. So it’s good to keep expectations in order.

As I wrote yesterday, the film is not great as its own movie. As a tribute memorial to Chadwick Boseman, it’s excellent and reverential. And it sets up a third movie down the line in two or three years.

But Boseman himself is sorely missing from “Wakanda Forever.” The film has no star, and there are some long, very dull stretches that audiences may enjoy for bathroom breaks. They key to the film’s success is a good third act with a couple of surprises.

The weather is dreadful tonight in New York-New Jersey-Connecticut which may affect some box office. But tomorrow morning we should wake up to $75 million opening (including that $28 million). Let’s see!

Steven Spielberg’s Oscar Bound “The Fabelmans” Opens Today in Limited Release, More Important Than Ever

0

Today, Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” an autobiographical film from him written with Tony Kushner, is released in limited run. In two weeks it will go wide. It could not be more pertinent or important right now.

With all the talk on antisemitism sweeping the country– something we didn’t think we’d ever in a modern world– “The Fabelmans” hits home. It’s at once a ‘fable’ about Spielberg becoming a movie maker, and also the story of a family divided even in love. And they are a Jewish family, depicted on screen rarely. Here it’s so pressing that The Fabelmans light Chanukah candles and talk about their religion. For Jewish audiences who have watched countless Christmas films, seeing “The Fabelmans” is like taking a warm bath.

Of course, the movie is more than just that. Spielberg and Kushner have made one of those rare films that is an instant classic, a “real” movie, the only one I’ve seen this year. “The Fabelmans” hearkens back to classic films like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “The Best Years of Our Lives,” peeling back the stories of members of this family at its own pace, then drawing them all together.

Michelle Williams leads the cast as Mrs. Fabelman, a stand in for Spielberg’s late real life mother. I was lucky enough to know Mrs. Spielberg just slightly because of her L.A. kosher restaurant. It’s remarkable how Williams has transformed herself into this small but vibrant person. Williams is absolutely the lead actress of the year, making her Mitzi vulnerable, smart, and no one’s victim. She’s ahead of her time.

All the other actors in this movie deserve call outs including Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Jeannie Berlin, Robin Bartlett, and most especially Gabriel LaBelle, 19, who will win all the awards this season for younger actor. He’s remarkable. And then there’s Judd Hirsch, who is now somehow 87, and beloved for decades. His one short turn as Mitzi’s uncle — explaining what an artist is to young Sammy — is stunning. Hirsch was nominated for an Oscar in 1981 for “Ordinary People,” went on to fame in TV in “Taxi” and other shows, has two Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Play, and now his time has come. Bravo!

Don’t miss this movie It’s not playing on Netflix. Get in the car, and go. You will not be disappointed.

Thanks to Amazon, Antisemitic Film Promoted by Kyrie Irving is Top of Home Viewing Chart Sandwiched Between Top Gun and Bullet Train, Book is Best Seller

0

Despite calls by Jewish groups and petitions from celebrities, Amazon.com and Jeff Bezos refuse to remove an antisemitic documentary and book from their platform.

The movie, called “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America,” is available for purchase or rent on Amazon Prime. The book, which was its source material, is available as well. In fact, thanks to Amazon it’s number 36 on their bestseller list. A movie and a book no one ever heard of have been turned into bestsellers. They are full of hate and lies. And each of them are labelled Best Sellers.

But this is what happens when there are no consequences for a hate crime.

NBA player Kyrie Irving promoted the antisemitic film on Twitter. The film, unknown to just about everyone, became a hot topic. Irving was fined by the Brooklyn Nets and was suspended for just five games. That was his punishment. Irving should have been suspended for a whole season. But so far the NBA has done little.

Now we have to live with the consequences. The film is sandwiched between “Top Gun Maverick” and “Bullet Train” on the home viewing chart for this past week. People have been watching it. Paying to see it. Buying it and keeping it.

You can read an open letter signed today by a number of celebrities asking Amazon and Barnes & Noble to remove the movie and the books supporting it immediately. Among those signing the letter are Mila Kunis (Actress), Debra Messing (Actress), Mayim Bialik (Actress), Sherry Lansing (Former CEO of Paramount Pictures), Tracy-Ann Oberman (Actress), Emmanuelle Chriqui (Actress), Haim Saban (Chairman & CEO, Saban Capital Group), Orly Marley (President, Tuff Gong Worldwide), Rick Rosen (Co-Founder, Endeavor), David Draiman (Frontman, Disturbed), Nina Tassler (Producer and Partner/Co-Founder, PatMa Productions); Diane Warren (Songwriter, Producer), Iliza Shlesinger (Comedian), and Ben Silverman (Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Propagate Content).

You can add my name to the list. This must be done immediately.

PS You can also read this insane story from the New York Times about NBA president Adam Silver absolving Irving. He — Silver — should be fired immediately.

Review: Underwhelming “Wakanda Forever” Is a Movie Without a Star, A Holding Place Til the Next Movie

0

Let’s face it, “Black Panther” was a cultural phenomenon. It made over $700 million in the US, and Chadwick Boseman was nominated for an Oscar. It was a significant film.

If Boseman had lived, who knows what a sequel would have been like? He really projected heroism and nobility. He was the center of “Black Panther,” you couldn’t take your eyes off of him.

Unfortunately, “Wakanda Forever” is a movie with a hole at its center. Boseman’s T’Challa is gone, and the movie doesn’t know how to get around that problem. T’Challa didn’t have a brother or son to replace or succeed him. The original film was already heavily stacked with powerful females, and they are all back. But without Boseman, there’s no movie star, no leader.

Disney has pumped up the Marvel fan base like crazy. But I think they, like the regular audience I saw “WF” with this afternoon, will be disappointed. The opening act is all about losing and mourning T’Challa, which director Ryan Coogler milks for everything he’s got. They’ve even turned the opening Marvel logo sequence into its own memorial momtage. And then there’s the majestic funeral. The only thing they’re missing is lox and bagels at the shivah.

Then, however, you have to have a movie — and they don’t. The world is mad at Wakanda for not sharing its vibranium, the magic material in the water under the powerful island country. Even the UN is mad the Wakandans won’t share it with them. (There’s a UN in the Marvel universe? For what purpose?) Eventually enemies arrive to try and dig the stuff up. Tenoch Huerta plays Namor, the leader of the pack, dressed as a gladiator from a 1950s epic. He is no Thanos (Josh Brolin) the really upsetting villain from the Avengers movies. Forget the hype. Namor is silly. There’s never a suggestion he’s going to win.

You could call this movie “The Woman King,” but that title obviously is unavailable. But with T’Challa gone, he’s briefly succeeded by his mother, the always sensational Angela Bassett. Bassett is a STAR. Unfortunately, her Queen Ramonda exits the movie at the halfway point. Letitia Wright’s Shuri becomes the Black Panther, but does not fill the void. The two remaining women — Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira — are top notch but they also are written as supporting players. (Also, once Ramonda has left, Shuri doesn’t seem to miss her much.)

Well, nature abhors a vacuum. And that’s what the second act is, even with cameo appearances by Julia Louis Dreyfus and Martin Freeman as rogue CIA agents. Winston Duke as M’Baku flits in and out but isn’t much of a presence. So when this two hour forty one minute extravaganza rolls to a somber ending, the audience just sits there hoping for something to chew on. Eventually they get it: a post credits Marvel when the gorgeous Nakia (the very underused Nyong’o) reveals she had a child with T’Challa who she’s been hiding in Haiti. He will be the Black Panther of the third and final movie. Yes, the audience applauded.

Except a huge first weekend at the box office. But what comes next, I can’t say. Other than a cameo from Michael B. Jordan as Eric Killmonger, the deceased villain of “Black Panther,” there’s not a lot of big moments here. There’s also almost no mention of T’Challa’s Marvel buddies except for a passing reference to the Hulk. This just adds to the feeling of being lost. But this happens with middle movies of trilogies. In two or three years the big finale should be more upbeat.

PS This movie is not going to be a Best Picture nominee. The special-ness of “Black Panther” is just not here.

Paul McCartney Releasing Limited Edition Souvenir Box of Eighty 45 RPM Singles in a Red Pine Crate

0

Paul McCartney’s had a lot of hits, from “Another Day” to “Uncle Albert” and more recent releases.

On December 2nd he’s releasing a real box set — in a box — of 80 remastered 45rpm singles, many of them UK and foreign releases, hard to get stuff, in reproduced covers.

Yes, these are singles with holes in the center. I hate to say it, but I probably hae the first 40 or so from original purchases! But the new mixes sound great — two are below — sound amazing. The whole thing comes housed in a two-piece, four-walled Redwood pine and Birch Ply wooden art crate manufactured in the United Kingdom.

There are only 3000 copies, whatever the price is they’ll sell out immediately if they haven’t already. I do hope there’s a CD version of this box sometime. Go to paulmccartney.com for more info.

John Travolta-Bruce Willis D Movie “Paradise City” Starts with a Zero on Rotten Tomatoes, Not Going to Movie Theaters

0

Not a shock: John Travolta and Bruce Willis’s D movie, “Paradise City,” is a bust.

So far three critics have posted to Rotten Tomatoes with “rotten” reviews. That gives “Paradise City” a zero.

The NY Times’s Glenn Kenny writes: “[It] sounds like one of those fake movies joked about on “Seinfeld” or “30 Rock.” And yet “Paradise City” is a reality of sorts, albeit an uncomfortable reality.”

Willis, of course, can’t actually speak and has been exploited by his family and business associates to keep making these pieces of trash. Travolta hasn’t made a decent movie in years– maybe decades — and can’t, apparently.

“Paradise City” is not going to movie theatres. It’s streaming tomorrow on some platforms, seems like for $14.99. LOL.

Madonna’s Daughter Lola Lourdes Leon Drops Soundalike Single with Offensive Title

0

The music you never wanted or needed is here.

Lola Lourdes Leon, Madonna’s oldest child, has released a single from her new EP. The new song is offensively titled “Cuntradiction.” It sounds like sludge sung by a younger version of Madonna. Lola’s stage name is Lolahol.

Poor Lourdes. We always thought she was the smart one. But now it seems she’s been launched as new-Madonna with videos featuring a lot of slithering and controversial songs. She doesn’t realize Madonna more or less earned the right to do those these things after winning over a pop audience with songs like Lucky Star, Holiday, and Like a Virgin.

This is not going to work. The songs are all electronic and sound very similar to each other. One of them has a male lead singer, and Lola is featured on her own track.

What Will Happen with Kanye’s StemPlayer? Computing Company Preparing Launch of New Product, Unclear if Rapper is Involved

0

What’s happening with Kanye West’s Stem Player?

Last week I reported that West didn’t actually own the trademark for Stem Player from UK company Kano Computing. They do. Now Alex Klein from that company has Tweeted (see below) that a Stem Player 2 is coming. It probably won’t be with Kanye’s music inside it.

The Stem Player is a sound device that was unveiled last year. When it came out it cost $200 and contained West’s album, “Donda 2.” It was the only way the album was available, so few people heard it or bought it.

The music may have just been licensed to Kano, which owns the rights to the player. It’s unclear if Kano is still in business with West, but as I reported previously they seem to have declared independence from him on social media.

Also, Stem Player instructions also include the way to delete “Donda 2” from the Player so it can be used for other things.

Klein writes on Twitter today: “STEM2 will have a completely unique way of discovering music based on where you are and who you’re with”

No one from Kano has ever returned an email or phone call. It’s highly unlikely that Kano is continuing with West since its founder, Alex Klein, is Jewish, and so are several other executives with the company.

Kano’s main business, by the way, is not selling pop albums. It’s making computers and devices for schools.
