The annual Global Citizen concert may be in trouble this Saturday.
The forecast calls for rain — and pain.
A huge Nor’easter is on its way to New York, which isn’t good for events in Central Park. Believe me, I know, I was there during the post-pandemic concert in the middle of a hurricane. It’s not pleasant.
Lauryn Hill is the headliner, with Wyclef Jean, Alicia Keys and friends, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Lainey Wilson, and Shaboozey.
Central Park is not set up for sheltering stars in the rain. Again, the Welcome Back concert flooded so quickly that the show had to be cancelled after two or three acts played. No one wants to be on metal stage during a lightning storm.
During the Welcome Back, Patti Smith, Barry Manilow, and Elvis Costello were stuck in the one structure available. Patti lit out for Smith & Wollensky steak house when it was clear she was not going on stage.
Another problem is no shelter or cover for the audience. It’s all open space. Even with parkas on and umbrellas, you’re in an exposed situation.
All in all, potentially bad news for a “charity” that does nothing but has proven adept at paying high salaries to its staff and putting on rock concerts.
