Very few people know the name Linda Martell. But they’ll be finding out about her tomorrow night.
That’s when Beyonce releases her country album, “Cowboy Carter: Act II,” which evidently features Martell, Willie Nelson, and Dolly Parton, too.
Martell retired in 1974, when she was just 32. But she was the first black woman to take on country music, and remains revered in the right circles. I wouldn’t be surprised if Beyonce makes a movie about her life. (Just remember, I called it first!)
“Act II” also features a duet with Dolly Parton on her classic hit, “Jolene,” and one with Nelson. This would be Beyonce’s clever nod to the King and Queen of country music. The album also incudes Beyonce’s big hit, “Texas Hold ‘Em.”
“Act II” sounds like it will be a mega hit for Beyonce, very thought out as a way of crossing her over from R&B and hip hop. She was exposed to country music growing up in Houston, so this is very natural. Will she finally get the Grammy Album of the Year? Very likely.
