(Watch) Early 90s All Star Nostalgia Single Is a Hit with New Kids, Salt-n-Pepa, Rick Astley, En Vogue

0

Out today is “Bring Back the Time,” a an all-star late 80s/early 90s slice of nostalgia. It’s already number 2 on iTunes.

The New Kids on the Block single features Rick Roll himself, Rick Astley, Salt-n-Pepa, and En Vogue all warbling about the good old days 30 years ago.

We’ve seen this kind of thing before, from other generations. In the 70s there was a nostalgia for the 50s. Then it was the Sixties in the 80s. The Seventies came back in the 90s. And so on. It’s a novelty song that will get a lot of traction for a short time. If you were 12 in 1989, “Bring Back the Time” will mean a lot to you.

The Fat Lady Sings: Met Opera Star Anna Netrebko Ousted from All Shows After Not Denouncing Putin

Metropolitan Opera star Anna Netrebko is out of the opera “Turandot” this spring and “Don Carlo” next season after not denouncing Vladimir Putin’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine.

Frankly, if Netrebko has taken this position, her opera career may be over. What a shame. She has a magnificent voice, as you can hear below.

But Netrebko, while declaring she supports the people of Ukraine, won’t criticize Putin or Russia for an unprovoked war. Yesterday’s New York Times explains it all.

Here’s the press release from Lincoln Center:

Not complying with the Met’s condition that she repudiate her public support for Vladimir Putin while he wages war on Ukraine, soprano Anna Netrebko has withdrawn from her upcoming Met performances in Puccini’s Turandot this April and May, as well as the run of Verdi’s Don Carlo next season. “It is a great artistic loss for the Met and for opera,” said Met General Manager Peter Gelb. “Anna is one of the greatest singers in Met history, but with Putin killing innocent victims in Ukraine, there was no way forward.”

Netrebko will be replaced in Turandot by soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska. A replacement for the role of Elisabeth de Valois in the 2022–23 performances of Don Carlo will be announced at a later date.

Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska, who has sung Turandot previously at the Ukrainian National Opera and at the Bolshoi, made her Met debut in 2012, singing the title role in Verdi’s Aida, which she again sang with the company in 2014. Her other Met roles include the title character in Puccini’s Tosca, Santuzza in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, and Abigaille in Verdi’s Nabucco. She has also performed widely at many leading opera houses, including Milan’s La Scala, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Barcelona’s Gran Theatre del Liceu, and many others.

The spring run of Turandot is conducted by Marco Armiliato and also stars Yonghoon Lee as Calàf, Ermonela Jaho as Liù, and Ferruccio Furlanetto as Timur. The production is by Franco Zeffirelli.

Kanye Posts Pity Party Video, “My Life Was Never Easy,” After Divorce Decreed, Shouts Out Pete Davidson (Lyrics)

0

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are divorced today. So Kanye has posted a new video called “My Life Was Not Easy,” in which he shouts out Pete Davidson, Kim’s boyfriend and rants about his tough upbringing. He didn’t really have such a bad upbringing, but everyone’s childhood is their own.

The video is interesting from a cinematography standpoint. He’s holding a decapitated head in his hand a la Hamlet holding Yorick’s — as in “Alas poor Yorick I knew him well.” Is Kanye Hamlet? Is his father haunting him? Or is he Yorick, the court jester? Anyway. Kanye’s father, Ray West, is alive. It’s his mother, Donda, who is sadly not with us.

The divorce is the topic of the video, as you’ll see. Is this song on “Donda 2”? No one knows because “Donda 2” can only be listened to officially on a $200 device that few are buying. (It’s being bootlegged everywhere, however.)

Kanye’s antipathy for Pete Davidson is pretty weird considering he– Kanye– has had a few girlfriends already in public.

Lyrics:
My life was never (Eazy)
My life was never (Eazy)
Started in my Cutlass clutchin’ heat like it’s an open oven
Puffin’ chronic, Puff and Biggie out the window, speaker subbin’
Run into the Crips, it ain’t no discussion
Bullet wounds drenched in Hennessy and teaspoons of Robitussin
Head up faze, got a few concussion, yeah
Compton’s amazed, Dr. Dre percussion
God, please grant my nigga eternal life, we need the beats
Aftermath where you fall asleep, you do not eat
And my belly is full, gorilla ridin’ the bull
Banana clips in the pool, swan dive in Clase Azul
The opps, I’m on they ass, grandmama whoopings in school
This Wilmington and Brazil where niggas die in they jewels
Too many Problems, too many YGs
So many ties to dollar signs, easy to end up on E
I got shot up like Columbine, the Crips descended on me
Sign my name on the dotted line, that was vengeance on beats
This is the way
My life was never (Eazy)
My life was never (Eazy)
There it is, there it was
Don’t interrupt just because
It’s no love
Shoulder shrug (shrug)
How I ain’t bring nothin’ to the table when I’m the table?
I’ma turn up the music, wake up the neighbors
I’ma get that “Thug Life” tatted ‘cross the navel
This is how I am in real life, not just on cable
“Mr. Narcissist, ” tell me ’bout my arrogance
No more counselin’, I don’t negotiate with therapists
God Ye, wanna let God in?
But tonight, I guess I’ll let my pride win
Cousin Dre sent me scriptures, helped me see life better
Nigga, we havin’ the best divorce ever
If we go to court, we’ll go to court together
Matter of fact, pick up your sis, we’ll go to Kourt’s together
I watched four kids for like five hours today
I wear these Yeezy boots everywhere, even in the shower today
I got love for the nannies, but real family is better
The cameras watch the kids, y’all stop takin’ the credit
Noncustodial dad, I bought the house next door
What you think the point of really bein’ rich for?
When you give ’em everything, they only want more
Boujee and unruly, y’all need to do some chores
Rich-ass kids, this ain’t yo’ mama house
Climb on your brother’s shoulders, get that Top Ramen out
God saved me from that crash
Just so I can beat Pete Davidson’s ass (who?)
And my new bitch bad
I know Illuminati mad
This that New-minati, bitch
This that two Bugatti rich
This that “God did this”
Only God did this
There it is, there it was
Don’t interrupt, just because
Ain’t no love, shoulder shrug
Won’t He do it? Yes He does
Won’t He do it? Yes He does
Won’t He do it?
My life was never (Eazy)
This next one gon’ be (Eazy)

Canadian Justice Scandal: Deleted Emails by Toronto Police in Fraud Trial Suggest Prosecutor Repressed Evidence for a Conviction

0
I told you some time ago about former music business manager Steven Nowack, of Toronto. In the spring of 2019, he stood trial in the equivalent of federal court in the U.S., which in Canada, is called the Ontario Superior Court of Justice,  accused of fraud. He wound up being convicted and going to jail. He’s finally out now.

To make matters worse, Justice Robert F. Goldstein– who presided over the trial– revoked his bail and Nowack was held in custody at the extremely unpleasant Toronto East Detention Centre. I visited him there in September 2019 before he was moved punitively to a medium to maximum security prison called Joyceville, in Kingston, Ontario. Nowack, I believe, is innocent and was wrongfully convicted by a jury of 12 counts of fraud over $5,000 in what the government alleged was a $15 million dollar case.

Nowack’s stay in prison was miserable and unnecessary. It turns out that during his trial — according to transcripts — he was not only verbally abused but also lied to by the judge and the prosecutor. Goldstein sent  the jury out of the courtroom a total of 126 times in 60 days.  There were certain things he didn’t want them to hear. And he made sure they didn’t. When the jury ultimately rendered its decision — conviction — they had no idea the subject of missing evidence had been discussed without them.

What Goldstein didn’t want the jury to know is that four days into the trial, the Toronto Police, had given prosecutor Renna Weinberg an email confirming that its computer system, had “systematically deleted” three and half years of email evidence related to Nowack’s case. The emails dated back to the the very first day of the case.

Nowack’s defense attorney, Paul Slansky asked Goldstein to conduct a voire dire (a trial within the trial) to determine the truth of the facts, as to what exactly had happened to these “systematically deleted” emails. Justice Goldstein refused, and strangely blamed the loss of the emails on Nowack. He said that none of the missing emails would assist Nowack with his defense. Goldstein denied Nowack his statutory and constitutional right to make full answer and defense.  .

Goldstein almost certainly knew this revelation of the deleted emails was a smoking gun that could damage the prosecution’s case.  Goldstein said that if the jury found out about the missing emails, it would, in his words, “derail the trial.”  At the start of the trial he’d begun to hear a disclosure motion before the jury was seated. But he abruptly adjourned it after two days and let the trial begin without it– something that never happens.

The judge also issued a ruling preventing Slansky and  Nowack from telling the jury about the deleted emails. Goldstein threatened Nowack throughout the trial with incarceration, if he dared to attempt to make the jury aware of the deleted emails. It wasn’t until after the trial and conviction that Slansky was able to get a disclosure hearing, and the government’s heretofore unknown activities were exposed.

We now know this:  in February 2019,  during  the trial, prosecutor Weinberg confirmed for herself that three and half  years of the Toronto Police emails about the Nowack case had been “systematically deleted” from the Toronto Police computer system. Valerie Dahan, Detective in the Financial Crimes department of the Toronto Police, had responded to an email about the missing evidence from Weinberg on February 14, 2019: “Throughout the Steven Nowack investigation, I believed that as the emails were automatically being archived, this resulted in them being safe from deletion.  As I did not have a need to access archived emails, I did not realize that as time went on the emails were being systematically deleted.”

During the trial on April 15, 2019, Slansky tried to introduce the subject of the missing evidence, by asking Nowack questions on the stand, under oath. Goldstein blew a gasket when Nowack tried to  bring the subject of the Toronto Police “systematically deleted” emails up, before the jury. Justice Goldstein was furious and excused the jury.  Justice Goldstein then went on to say: “There is no evidence, whatsoever, that the Toronto Police systematically destroyed emails.  That is not the evidence.  Mr. Nowack may believe it.  That’s his opinion.  It has nothing to do with anything that the jury has to decide.  I don’t want to hear it,” he said, and then acted very oddly. He said: ” I’m going to take a break now while I calm down.”

When Goldstein returned to court after his hissy fit, defense attorney Slansky argued that there was a potential fraud being perpetrated on the Court. Slansky said the explanations of  The Toronto Police and the Crown — confirmed by their very own email — that they had “systematically deleted” three and half years of email evidence related to Mr. Nowack’s case were questionable. Justice Goldstein replied, ” The only fraud that – okay, maybe there’s been a fraud perpetrated on the court.  That could be.  But, you’re objection is noted.  I do not agree, because in fact, Mr. Nowack certainly asked questions.  I will ask you to please refrain from getting involved in things that have, that Mr. Nowack has no personal knowledge of. “

This was shocking. Goldstein denied the very existence of the evidence that he had seen and heard and then conceded it was possible a fraud had been perpetrated on the court, by the Toronto Police and the Crown.  Yet he did nothing. He didn’t stop or dismiss the trial, or recuse himself. He chose instead to continue on with the trial and Nowack was convicted.

From prison, Nowack actually wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and to the Attorney General of Canada and the Attorney General of Ontario alleging serious and grave acts of misconduct by Goldstein, asking them to stay the proceedings. (The government has the discretion to do this in the rare instance of acts of misconduct by a judge.)  Trudeau and the Attorney General’s and Justice Minister of Canada, David Lametti, didn’t respond to Nowack’s allegations, although Prime Minister Trudeau’s office did write to Mr. Nowack, on behalf of Prime Minister Trudeau,  saying they understood his concerns.

But no one did anything about it.

After  Nowack had been in prison for 346 days, Slansky was finally able to win a bail, pending appeal motion for Nowack. He was released on April 6, 2020, but not without a hitch. The order was for April 3rd, a Friday. Why did it take three days to secure the release? The prison refused to release Nowack and made him stay over the weekend, violating the court order on purpose.

Jennifer Hudson’s Talk Show is a ‘Go’ at Fox Stations as A Replacement for Ellen DeGeneres

0

She’s got the Oscar and a bunch of other awards. Now Jennifer Hudson is coming to afternoon TV.

JHud will host her own syndicated talk show beginning in the fall, from Warner Bros. Telepictures. The show will have Ellen DeGeneres’s old producers, Andy Lassner and Mary Connelly. It will air on Fox TV Stations, at least for now, as it makes its way into the crowded field of syndicated shows.

What is clear is that JHud will be a competitor for Kelly Clarkson. Now we will have two talk shows hosted by “American Idol” graduates. How long before Carrie Underwood tries this?

Hudson will be able to do what Clarkson does– sing her heart out as much she wants. I will watch every day if she does that! She has the best voice in pop R&B, hands down.

She also has tremendous empathy. Hudson has a lot of loss in her life, so I think she’ll be good not just with celebrities but in those crucial segments with real people.

“I have experienced so much in my life; I’ve seen the highest of the highs, the lowest of the lows, and just about everything in between, but as my mother always told me, ‘Once you think you’ve seen it all, just keep on living,’” Hudson said in a statement Wednesday.

Want to See “The Batman”? Ticket Prices Vary from 8 Bucks in West Virginia to $29 in Manhattan

0

“The Batman” is supposed to fight crime.

But the movie — three hours long — is going to rob you faster than a Gotham City mob if you live in the wrong place.

AMC Theaters is applying variable pricing for “The Batman” depending on demographics and location.

On New York’s Upper West Side, for example, tickets are $28.99. Per person. Yes, you read that correctly.

An hour north, in Port Chester, New York, the price is $23.00. Further north, in Danbury, Connecticut, just 15 bucks.

Around the country, the price to see “The Batman” is really variable. The lowest price I could find was in Elkins, West Virginia: just eight dollars and fifty six cents. Next best was Broken Arrow, Oklahoma: $12.62.

Up in Chicago, the “Batman” ticket was priced for richer folks, at $23.17. Down in Creve Coeur, Missouri you get a deal at $14.16. And at The Grove in the heart of West Hollywood adjacent, $19.99, just 70 cents more than Miami, Florida.

So seeing “The Batman” may take a little shopping  — and driving — to save money. But you do get the total bang for your buck. But two people, gas, baby sitter maybe, a bite to eat and you won’t be forgetting that this movie is about vengeance against corporations and billionaires. That’s the irony.

War is Good For Prime Time Cable: CNN Shows Rise by a Million or More Viewers During Ukraine Crisis

0

End of the world? Nuclear war? Not such a good thing.

But for CNN, break out the Champagne!

When I wrote the story of Jeff Zucker’s ouster from CNN on February 3rd —  one month ago– CNN’s prime time ratings were shockingly low. All the shows — Jake Tapper, Anderson Cooper, Don Lemon — were averaging 600,000 viewers a night. Erin Burnett was doing a little better with almost 700.000.  But Fox News was bringing in two-and-three- million at the same time. Things were bleak at CNN.

But then came crazy, evil Vladmir Putin. Mad Vlad threatened to blow up the world. His invasion of Ukraine is no joke. It’s serious and legitimately scary. And when that kind of news breaks, people turn to CNN.

In the last week, all the CNN prime time shows are up by a million or more viewers per night. When the network sent Anderson Cooper to Ukraine last night, his numbers shot up by 2 million! Last night, he scored 2.3 million viewers! It’s kind of amazing that he went there since his second son was born just three weeks ago.

But Cooper live from a catastrophe has always been a hit. Remember when he was standing hip deep in flood waters during Hurricane Katrina? The CNN viewers like a cliffhanger.

The Russian invasion has been good for Fox News, as well. After Trump lost the election in November 2020, their numbers receded as well. But now their prime time block is averaging 4.5 million a night for viewers who want a lot of misinformation and jaundiced views about how Biden is handling this disaster. (He’s done a great job, which Fox News refuses to admit.)

So war is hell, but not for ratings. If only Zucker hadn’t had his other issues, he could be enjoying the fruits of his staff’s labor right now!

War of Oscar Parties Won By Elton John: Lady Gaga Tapped to Co-Host Hollywood Gala with Billy Porter, Eric McCormack

0

Which of the two biggest galas will draw the most celebs on Oscar night? I’d say Elton John’s AIDS Foundation.

EJAF has just announced three co-hosts for the annual soiree; Lady Gaga, Billy Porter, and Eric McCormack.

Just to see what Gaga and Porter will be wearing should bring out the A list. McCormack, I assume, will just be in a tuxedo. But he’ll also have his “Will & Grace” contingent. too.

Porter will fetch the Broadway crowd, and drag queens galore from “Pose.”

But Gaga will bring out the music and movie crowd. In droves.

Plus, Brandi Carlile is performing, and David Furnish will be the Foundation’s host for the evening.

Sadly, Elton John will be on tour, performing in of all places Lincoln, Nebaska. But maybe he’ll Zoom in for a duet with Carlile or Gaga.

The EJAF Oscar party usually brings out stars like Sharon Stone, Steven Tyler, Smokey Robinson, and all the Oscar winners from the evening.

In anticipation of the iconic event, Elton John AIDS Foundation will present an Instagram Live conversation with Billy Porter (@theebillyporter) and David Furnish (@davidfurnish) on March 3, 2022 at 8:45am ET/1:45pm GMT. Visit @EJAF’s social media for more details.

And so the Oscar party wars are on! Vanity Fair’s party is much diminished from previous years as the magazine’s popularity has faded. Their current web traffic is less than half of Vogue or New York magazine. Circulation has been dwindling as well.

The annual Academy Awards Viewing Party is aligned with the 30th anniversary of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and also marks its return to live events. Since the event’s inception in 1992, the Viewing Party has supported the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s efforts by raising more than $86 million for its lifesaving work. All funds raised support the Foundation’s network of partners and local experts across four continents to challenge discrimination, prevent infections and provide treatment, as well as influencing governments to end AIDS.

Broadway: James Earl Jones Becomes Only Living Performer to Have Theater Named For Him

0

Luke Skywalker, I am your theater!

The great actor James Earl Jones is getting an amazing honor. The Shubert Organization is renaming  the Cort Theater on West 48th St. the James Earl Jones Theater.

The Tony winning actor will be the only living performer with his name on a Broadway house. He will also be the second Black person to have one, after late playwright August Wilson’s theater on West 52nd St.

Jones, who turned 91 in January. has appeared in fourteen Broadway productions at Shubert theatres, including two at the Cort Theatre. Most recently Mr. Jones portrayed Weller Martin across from Cicely Tyson’s Fonsia Dorsey in the 2015 Broadway revival of Donald L. Coburn’s The Gin Game at Shubert’s John Golden Theatre.

The actor has two Tony Awards, an Emmy award, and a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award. He has received a Kennedy Center honor. JEJ deserves all the accolades he can receive, and this one may be the sweetest of all.

Bravo to the Shubert Organization. Plus, the Cort is a little gem on West 48th St., home to a long history of great productions.

Kevin Costner Shows Political Colors, Makes “Yellowstone” Doc Deal with Ultra Conservative Fox Nation

EXCLUSIVE Kevin Costner was always a rare right wing Republican in Hollywood. But when it didn’t serve his purposes, Costner backed off for a time, at least publicly.

Oddly, now Costner has revealed himself again. It seems like a funny moment, but money talks. Costner has made a deal with Fox Nation, Rupert Murdoch’s ultra right conservative streaming service, to make a documentary about the 150 years of Yellowstone National Park.

The four part doc, called “Yellowstone: One Fifty,”  will be produced by Costner’s company and narrated by him for Fox Nation.

Costner, of course, is having a career revival with the “Yellowstone” TV Series on the Paramount channel. So this seems a little odd. Why isn’t the doc for Paramount Plus or Paramount TV? And why did Costner decide to make a deal with Fox Nation? That is one scary outfit. They are just right of right and down the hall.

But Costner doesn’t do anything blindly, so he’s definitely making a point. And “Yellowstone” fans who didn’t get the message before should now.

The irony, of course, is that conservatives would drill and hunt in national parks if they had the chance. So I’m not even sure how the National Park Service agreed to have a documentary on Fox Nation. Costner’s partner on this, Marc Pierce, owns Warm Spring Productions, home to reality shows about hunting, roping, and shooting. Pierce is a robust Republican donor to many GOP candidates.

Kevin, we see you.
