Strike Fallout: ABC’s “General Hospital” Has Lost 300,000 Viewers Since May 1st, Hit Lowest Ever This Month

0

What is going on with ABC’s “General Hospital”?

I told you earlier today that one veteran actor is taking time off to battle blood cancer, so that’s first.

But now it seems that the show’s ratings are also ailing. Two weeks ago, the number of total viewers dropped to 1.8 million, the lowest ever or in anyone’s recent memory.

On May 1st, the soap had 2.1 million viewers, and that was also the case a year ago.

What’s happening here? Since the middle to end of June the show has been using scripts supplied by scabs of writers who’ve elected to be fi-core (keep writing, forfeit union benefits like voting). The new writers may have changed storylines and characters’ prominence. These things can make fans unhappy.

Disney-ABC has also had fights with various carriers resulting in their shows not being broadcast everywhere. But a lot of that is recent, and doesn’t account totally for the drop off.

Of course all three remaining broadcast soaps have had big dips this summer. A fourth show, “Days of our Lives,” airs on NBC’s Peacock and doesn’t release numbers.

“General Hospital” is starting to try stunt casting to bring back viewers. They announced today that Rena Sofer, last seen on the show 26 years ago, is returning. They’ve also been bringing back characters from now defunct ABC soaps “All My Children” and “One Life to Live.”

Something had better goose the numbers soon, or there will likely be changes when the strikes are over.

Strike News: Is CBS’s “The Talk” Really Coming Back Next Week? They Taped a Rehearsal Today, But So Far There’s No Way to Reserve Tickets

0

Is CBS’s “The Talk” coming back next week?

The word was the afternoon chat show was returning on Monday September 18th, same as Drew Barrymore’s show. It’s been off the air since May when the WGA strike began, as opposed to “The View” on ABC which has been live almost the whole time without writers.

Both shows are produced by CBS, but “The Talk” comes from Los Angeles while “Drew” is in New York. The latter show is now the subject of a very active protest and picket line, which is harming its PR.

So far there is no way to reserve audience tickets for “The Talk” next week. On the site for 1iota.com, there are tickets for “The View,” “Live with Kelly and Mark,” and other live shows. There is nothing for “The Talk.” One Twitter follower got a message from 1iota that the show was on hold until after the strikes are resolved.

On the CBS website there’s no mention of the new season of “The Talk.”

One person on “The Talk” who may be fighting the return is host Jerry O’Connell. He’s been photographed on the SAG picket line many times. (His Instagram page is full of supporting photos.) He’s a member and so is his wife, actress Rebecca Romijn. As glib as O’Connell is, it’s unclear if he could steer a daily hour without writers.

At “The Talk” production office in Los Angeles, someone who answered the phone said they had no idea if the show was returning next week.

PS I’m told they taped a rehearsal today, and will return on Monday without writers. The show will be ad-libbed live.

Hamptons Film Fest Scores Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” “Nyad,” “The Holdovers,” Paul Simon Doc, “Rustin,” and Ron Delsener Doc Among Others

0

The Hamptons Film Festival schedule is up, and it’s quite exciting.

The fest secured Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” for closing night, plus a raft of heavy hitters including George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin,” Alex Gibney’s Paul Simon doc, and Jake Sumner’s great film about concert impresario Ron Delsener. A big attraction coming is Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers” starring Paul Giamatti, which is so good there will be lines around the block!

Simon will turn up for a Q&A as well.

Netflix has a heavy hand in the proceedings. Along with “Rustin” and “Maestro,” they also have the opening night film, “Nyad,” plus Todd Haynes’ “May December” starring local actress Julianne Moore. They are all being touted for Best Picture nominations. “Nyad” is exceptional– well so is “Rustin.” (Haven’t seen the other two yet.)

I’m really excited to see “Orlando, My Political Biography,” directed by Paul B. Preciado, which tells stories of transition through unique reenactments and visual interpretations of Virginia Woolf’s “Orlando.” It’s my favorite of Woolf’s novels. Read it before the festival, it will blow your mind!

I’m also curious to see Frederick Wiseman’s “Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troigrois,” which centers on the day-to-night operations of the legendary French restaurant Troisgros, founded 93 years ago and currently being passed down to the 4th generation in a family of chefs.

There are lots of other activities including a tribute to “Past Lives” director Celine Song who will receive the 2023 Breakthrough Artist Award.

The festival runs from October 5th to the 12th. All the info is at  https://hamptonsfilmfest.org/

REM’s Michael Stipe on Monkee Micky Dolenz 4 Song EP of New Wave Giant’s Songs: “This is the pinnacle of wow for me!” (Listen)

0

Micky Dolenz is a shiny, happy person.

The forever Monkee has made a 4 track EP of REM songs, all approved by the group.

First one out is “Shiny Happy People” (below). The other tracks are excellent choices — “Radio Free Europe,” “Man on the Moon,” and “Leaving New York.” I’ve heard them and they’re terrific!

It’s a great idea. I miss REM and the Monkees. This is a perfect combination!

In a throw-back, definitely old-school, Dolenz will be hosting an in-store at Wuxtry Records in Athens, GA, for the EP’s release on November 3rd.

The store, shown on the EP sleeve it is the spot where the members of R.E.M. first met and decided to form a band.

Fully sanctioned by R.E.M., Michael Stipe of the band tweeted today: “This is the pinnacle of wow for me. I love The Monkees and I love Micky Dolenz.”

R.E.M. has praised The Monkees and wonder why they’re not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I do, too!

PS The band is led by Christian Nesmith. son of late Monkee Mike. Back up vocals from Micky’s sister, Coco Dolenz.

Amazing Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Just 95, Recovering from “Incident,” Grimaces Happily During Physical Therapy

0

Dr. Ruth Westheimer is an amazing lady.

Just 95 years young, she’s posted pictures from her physical therapy at RiverSpring (aka the Hebrew Home in Riverdale, the Bronx).

She says she’s recovering from an “incident” and she’s grimacing — happily — in the pictures. She says she’s being treated royally.

Dr. Ruth is a Holocaust survivor whose parents died in concentration camps. As a young woman in Israel she joined the army and was trained as a sniper. In France she became a psychologist. Moving to the US, she became famous as sexologist and author. Her Wikipedia bio is stunning. I’m surprised no one’s made a movie about her yet!

Get well soon, Dr. Ruth! You’re one of our living legends,

“General Hospital” Star John J. York Looking for Bone Marrow Donor, Will Take 3-4 Months Off Show to Battle Blood Cancers

0

Actor John J. York has been playing Mac Scorpio on and off for 30 years on “General Hospital.”

Yesterday the longtime favorite star announced he’d be taking “three to four months” off the soap opera to fight blood cancers. He’s looking for a bone marrow donor as quickly as possible.

York turns 65 in December and looks like the image of good health. But his ailments are serious.

He says in the video below: “So last December of ’22, I was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes, or MDS, and multiple smoldering myeloma — two blood and bone marrow disorders.” He added: “Over the past many months, I’ve had three bone marrow biopsies, many chemo treatments, I have another one coming up in a couple of weeks, and I’m closing in on a blood stem cell transplant.”

As for the donor part, it’s an emergency. “If it’s possible and you would consider being a donor, joining their registry, for not just me but thousands and thousands of other people who are in need of a donor, go to bethematch.org/matchformac,” he said. (You must be between the ages of 18-40.)

Despicable Donald Trump Jr Teaches 14 Year Old Son to Murder Prized Game in Tanzania, Africa on Hunting Trip (Video)

0

PS Sorry– Junior took down the video which showed him and the kid murdering unsuspecting animals in Africa, and high-fiving each other. But the picture of Donnie III grinning over a dead zebra says it all.

So the cancerous mind of Donald Trump Sr, which we knew traveled to the mind of his idiot son, Junior has now infected Jr’s son called Donnie.

Junior has posted a disgusting 14 minute video of a hunting trip he and Donnie took to Tanzania in Africa. There they are are killing precious animals — which they call game — including zebras.

If looking at Junior in his coke-fueled videos wasn’t enough to make you vomit, this should do it.

All bets are off now on Donnie Trump, who’s 14 and is being raised to follow in the moronic and dangerous footsteps of his forebears. Every pro-animal organization in the world should condemn these asshats.

If only one of these brave animals turned around and ate this pair for lunch! Or if only they shot each other by accident!

(Listen) Justin Timberlake Reunites NSync for First New Song (And More — Super Bowl?) in 20 Years on Coming “Trolls” Soundtrack

0

NSync is back!

Justin Timberlake has reunited his boy band for their first new recording in roughly 20 years.

The song is called “Better Place” and the full version drops September 29th. Below is a clip. It comes from the new “Trolls” soundtrack– the movie and CD are due in November.

The marketing plan for this began Sunday when NSync appeared on the MTV VMA Awards.

Timberlake has been involved with the “Trolls” movies’ soundtracks since they first began. One of his best and biggest singles ever was “Can’t Stop the Feeling” in 2016. But Justin — after a couple of big hit solo albums — stopped the feeling with his weird album, “Man of the Woods,” in 2018. It was a flop. So this idea of reuniting with NSync is gold. A new album is sure to follow, and then a big tour. It’s a win win for everyone including the rest of the group.

Could NSync be headed to the Super Bowl come February 11, 2024? Most definitely. Jay Z controls halftime. He and Justin are old friends. NSync would be a huge in Las Vegas at the Bowl and bring in substantial ratings no matter which teams make it to the finals.

Bill Maher Will Bring Real Time, His HBO Talk Show, Back with Guests But Without Writers

0

Peripatetic talk show host Bill Maher used to have a show called “Politically Incorrect.”

That described him a T. So now, going against popular opinion, he will resume his current show, “Real Time,” without writers. His statement is below. Like “The View” and “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” he’s going to wing it rather than stay dark like the other late night hosts.

Maybe Maher will moderate a weekly examination of the WGA and SAG strikes until they are resolved, and please god, not take the side of management.

His post:

“Real Time is coming back, unfortunately, sans writers or writing. It has been five months, and it is time to bring people back to work. The writers have important issues that I sympathize with, and hope they are addressed to their satisfaction, but they are not the only people with issues, problems, and concerns. Despite some assistance from me, much of the staff is struggling mightily. We all were hopeful this would come to an end after Labor Day, but that day has come and gone, and there still seems to be nothing happening. I love my writers, I am one of them, but I’m not prepared to lose an entire year and see so many below-the-line people suffer so much. I will honor the spirit of the strike by not doing a monologue, desk piece, New Rules or editorial, the written pieces that I am so proud of on Real Time. And I’ll say it upfront to the audience: the show I will be doing without my writers will not be as good as our normal show, full stop. But the heart of the show is an off-the-cuff panel discussion that aims to cut through the bullshit and predictable partisanship, and that will continue. The show will not disappoint.”

Toronto Review: “Irena’s Vow” Is a Sublime Real Life Holocaust Fable That Doesn’t Flinch from the Horrors of War

0

Thirteen years ago, “Irena’s Vow” had a short run on Broadway starring Tovah Feldshuh. She got good reviews but it didn’t quite work and closed after about 100 performances.

Now writer Dan Gordon has adapted the true life story of a Polish Catholic girl named Irena Gut for film and the material makes more sense. Louise Archambault deftly directs Sophie Nelisse (from Yellowjackets), Dougray Scott, and a cast of Polish actors. It’s a Canadian production shot in Poland and tells how Irena, as a young woman, saved a dozen Jews in Warsaw from being killed by the Nazis.

Gut died in 2003 but before that she was interviewed by Gordon extensively, Her own daughter, and a very much alive older man who is featured in the real life story as a baby, came to the screening in Toronto. “Irena’s Vow” was maybe my favorite film of the whole festival and is now looking for a distributor.

The story will remind you of Anne Frank’s. A young Irena began witnessing atrocities against the Poles– the Jews– by the invading Germans. She hid the dozen Jews– including several couples — in the basement of a mansion occupied by a ranking German official, Major Eduard Rugemeier. She was working in the house as a servant to save herself, eventually became his mistress as a trade off when he discovered what she was up to. When the Russians finally arrived in 1944, Irena went to a displaced persons camp while the major fled with the Germans.

Irena eventually wrote a memoir and was honored in Israel at Yad Vashem for her heroism in 1982. Thirty years later, in 2012, Rugemeier was also honored by Yad Vashem, although his protection of the Jews, I think, had more to do with wanting to keep Irena under his control.

Chemistry is everything in movies, and Archambault has made a seriously gripping film that seems almost like a light-hearted fable but never flinches from the horrors of the Holocaust. Archambault and Gordon introduce her to the Holocaust when a Nazi soldier brutally kills a baby outside a window. Irena is catalyzed from that moment on/

Nelisse is remarkably poised for a 23 year old, she’s an old soul who gets it. Glamorous in person, Nelisse — who has a flat Canadian accent — stuns because her Irena is so vibrantly drawn on screen. She’s a plain girl heroically keeping one step ahead of death — not for herself but for the people she’s decided to protect.

If the old Miramax were still around, Harvey Weinstein (now Public Enemy Number 1) would have turned “Irena’s Vow” into an awards season event. Maybe someone less odious can step up and do that now.
