Can Johnny Depp Battle Back from Oblivion with “Ebenezer”? The Original Scrooge McDuck Hasn’t Had a Hit Movie in 10 Years, Since “Pirates 5”

Johnny Depp is trying to make a comeback.

He may have a Dickens of a time.

Depp hasn’t been in a hit movie since 2015’s fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, “Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

His most popular work in the last decade was his crazy performance on video in his divorce and lawsuit with Amber Heard.

Otherwise it’s been duds like “Minimata” and “London Fields.” And appearances in Marilyn Manson movies.

His next film, I told you a couple of weeks ago, called “Day Drinker,” was apparently a nightmare shoot. Many editors have come and gone trying to fix it.

“Ebenezer” reviews are embargoed by the way until next Thursday at 12 noon — just as the film opens in previews.

“Ebenezer” has the built-in ID of “A Christmas Carol” and Charles Dickens. Everyone knows the story. If Tim Burton had directed it, there might be some interest. Ti West’s credits include mostly TV and music videos. I do like the name of his wife, Alison Wonderland.

In the video, Depp makes his case for playing the infamous Scrooge. I don’t know who that guy is lurking around in the background. It’s not Johnny’s publicist, Melissa Nathan, currently in the news and courts for her part in the Justin Baldoni-Blake Lively debacle. But that guy does look serious, doesn’t he?

Showbiz411 is now in its 13th year of providing breaking and exclusive entertainment news. This is an independent site, unlike the many Hollywood trades that are owned by one company. To continue providing news that takes a fresh look at what's going on in movies, music, theater, etc, advertising is our basis. Reader donations would be greatly appreciated, too. They are just another facet of keeping fact based journalism alive.
