The wild world of rock superstars U2 may be coming to an end.
In a new interview, Bono drops a little bomb into the mix with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.
When Lowe observes that the band’s new album, “Carnaval de Luz,” sounds like a goodbye and hello, Bono has a surprising response.
“It’s more of a goodbye,” he says.
The new album drops on November 13th. A worldwide tour is developing and it could go on for some time. But once it’s all over — 18 months from now, let’s say — Bono has indicated that the five decade journey will be over.
It would be hard to think of U2 retired, especially with groups like the Rolling Stones, and Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr solo each still out there after 60 years. Of course, we’ve seen many farewell tours from The Who, and still they’ve come back.
One irony of all this is that “Carnaval de Luz” — which I’ve heard just once — is remarkably modern. The group sounds like they worked very hard to not make “another U2 album,” but something unique and exciting.
Of course, there are problems for any legacy artists. New music doesn’t sell like the old. It’s almost impossible to get radio play. And ticket prices for live shows are through the roof. So I guess we’ll see where this all goes, or if Bono was just waxing poetic.
