“60 Minutes” Will Have to Rely on NFL Games Because Segments are Underwhelming: Two GOP Women Fight About Voting, “Ali G” Redux, Helium

Tomorrow night’s “60 Minutes” looks pretty underwhelming.

The Bari Weiss-Nick Bilton overhaul so far has not been a great success editorially. CBS will be depending on an overflow audience from NFL games, mostly the Kansas City Chiefs, for an improvement in ratings.

The three segments set for tomorrow night are each a little suspect.

Lesley Stahl, coming off her controversial Israel report last week, looks like she lost a bet. Her piece on voter fraud is about two GOP women locked in a feud. One is from the DOJ, the other is the Lt. Governor of Utah. The latter is resisting the former trying to voting records from the state. The latter says it doesn’t affect the current elections, so don’t get excited. Don’t worry, we’re not.

Jon Wertheim has a report on helium gas in short supply because of the Iran war. Google ‘helium shortage’ and see dozens of pieces on this subject. I don’t want to take the air from his balloon, but this isn’t a pressing matter. We’ll see what’s news.

New contributor Ariel Levy profiles Sacha Baron Cohen on the eve of his new “Ali G” movie. She couldn’t have predicted that Amazon is dumping the film. They’re showing it for one weekend in theaters. And then what? So far, it’s not listed on Amazon Prime.

So many subjects the show is not covering, and the reporting seems not up to standards of depth. They better hope those NFL games are close and go into overtime.

It’s notable that the “60 Minutes” Twitter account is full of stories from previous seasons.
