Beep beep!
“Coyote vs. Acme” was pretty Looney this weekend, with a $15.4 million take.
Not bad for a movie we almost never saw after it was dumped by its original studio.
The live action-animated four star film finished second for the weekend and should hold up nicely through Labor Day weekend.
The #1 movie, of course, is Sony’s “Spider Man: Brand New Day.” The biggest movie of the year will hit $900 million by Tuesday, with $1 billion now in its sights. The worldwide total is over $2.1 billion. How much longer can this go on? A lot, apparently.
Less wonderful is “The Dog Stars,” which cost around $110 million. Ridley Scott, Jacob Elordi, and Josh Brolin did their part, but they could have used Lassie and Old Yeller as guest stars. Total is $8 million.
“The Odyssey” is staring down $600 million US with $563 mil now. Worldwide total is $1.5 million. Odysseus is probably thinking of how he could get a sequel even though Chris Nolan sent him off to a happy retirement.
Sony’s “Insidious” is slowing down after a front-loaded start. Total is now $43.6 million after 10 days.
And A24’s “Tony” is getting backburnered despite great reviews. This week was off by 55%, totaling $11 million. Unless marketing can cook something up, “Tony” is heading ta good life on streaming and home video.
One more weekend left for summer and we head to fall releases. Awards races are starting, but they should be modest considering “The Odyssey” pretty much has a lock on everything.
