Dolly Parton is in heaven, but here on Earth the tributes continue.
Dolly’s death yesterday has triggered an avalanche of sales unlike any I’ve ever seen as a memorial.
On iTunes, Dolly has the top 5 singles. But she also no less than SIXTY of the top 100 spots. Her records occupy most of the top 30. The whole chart has shifted because of fans turning out for Dolly.
It’s kind of amazing. Any song with her name on it, any collaboration, and all her solo records are included.
At number 1 is Dolly’s version of her signature song, which she wrote, “I Will Always Love You.” Whitney Houston’s version is at number 14.
And that’s just singles. Dolly also has 8 of the Top 10 spots on the album chart. Then Dolly fans have lodged 17 more spots in the top 40, bringing the total to 25 of 40.
There 14 more albums on the way to 100, including Whitney Houston’s Greatest Hits. So the total is 39 out of 100.
And that’s just on iTunes. Amazon sales are similar. Dolly has 8 of the top 10 CDs or vinyl, and dozens more through the top 100 in physical sales.
Parton’s catalog goes back 60 years and is chock full of other releases. Plus, inevitably, there will a series of unreleased music that will follow. Fans are grabbing up anything with Dolly’s name on it, including things like Kenny Rogers’ greatest hits.
