“Emilia Perez” Star Karla Sofia Gascon’s Past Racist Tweets Unravel A Year of Oscar Campaigning

Share

Karla Sofia Gascon, star of “Emilia Perez,” has destroyed the movie’s entire Oscar campaign in one day. It’s tragic because so many people worked so hard to make this movie a hit and to get it the most Oscar nominations of the year.

But the discovery of Gascon’s past racist Tweets has burned down Jacques Audiard’s movie faster than the recent wildfires. Certainly the people who worked on the film like Audiard, the cast and crew must have known this was Gascon’s personality.

But here we are, and it’s terrible.

A post from from Sept. 2, 2020, with a photo of a Muslim family in a restaurant, including a woman in a burka, reads: “Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.”

And it just keeps getting worse.

When “Nomadland” won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2020, Gascon wrote:

“More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”

Gascon expressed hate for Muslims and Asians. She had nothing good to say about George Floyd’s murder. She wrote: “I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys Without rights and consider policemen to be assassins,” she posted. “They’re all wrong.”

Gascon lost her mind during the pandemic. “So many scientists in the world making bombs, so many scholars constructing objects for space, so many medicinal factories and there’s no one who can get in line with this Chinese shit. (shrug emoji) In the end, it was a tremendous show for a new variant of the flu, avian or coronavirus.”

Journalist Sarah Hagi dug up the Tweets, and while it seems like an effort to undermine “Emilia Perez,” the reality is Gascon’s level of hate is shocking. She wrote these things, for better or worse. The wore part is that she’s the first trans actress to get an Oscar nomination and she’s not a role model for anyone.

My sympathies to Netflix and everyone who worked on the film.
