Hunter Biden GUILTY on All Three Counts in Gun Trial: He’s Probably Going to Prison (UPDATED with Statement)

0

Hunter Biden has been found guilty on all three counts in his gun trial.

The son of President Joe Biden will likely go to prison when he’s sentenced. President Biden has already said he will not pardon him or commute his sentence.

“I am more grateful today for the love and support I experienced this last week from Melissa, my family, my friends, and my community than I am disappointed by the outcome,” Hunter Biden wrote in a statement following his guilty verdict. “Recovery is possible by the grace of God, and I am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time.”

Biden was found guilty of making a false statement in connection with the sale of a firearm, a false statement in a firearms transaction, and possessing a firearm while being a drug user or drug addict.

He still has another trial to face in Los Angeles this September where he’s charged in federal court with failing to pay taxes on more than $1.4 million in income over several years.

Noted: unlike Donald Trump — convicted on 34 counts — Hunter Biden has not attacked his judge or prosecutors.

Motion Picture Academy Criticized in Signed Petition Over Lacking Jewish Influence Exhibit

0

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has had a day that started with promise but ended with criticism.

Earlier in the day, AMPAS announced their new slate of governing directors, returning and newly installed.

They also announced the A list names that would be honored in October at a dinner to raise money for the newish Academy Museum. They are Rita Moreno, Quentin Tarantino, and oddly, actor Paul Mescal. The latter is rather a new name in Hollywood, and unexpected for any honor yet.

But the real drama concerning the Museum broke a little later when the New York Times revealed the tug of war going on inside the museum over a new exhibit designed to highlight how Jews built Hollywood and the studios. The Times revealed a petition that was signed and sent to the Academy objecting to the shabby presentation of the men who gave us the studios that still roar like turbo engines.

No names were released, but I knew this was going on a few weeks ago when “Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital” opened. That night, I got many phone calls from guests who were severely disappointed that the exhibit was skimpy and bordered on antisemitic. They said that night that the wording on signs was offensive.

What followed was anger among Academy members and the ouster of museum director Jacqueline Stewart. She was instantly replaced by Amy Homma, considered more sympathetic to the actual origin story of Hollywood and not the new woke alternative.

But now the Times reports that the petition has surfaced, signed by over 300 Academy members. Many of them are big stars in their different areas, and many whose names came up on the day after the opening. After all, the Museum first opened last fall there was no nod to Hollywood’s Jewish roots. This was supposed to be an improvement, but it backfired.

“While we acknowledge the value in confronting Hollywood’s problematic past, the despicable double standard of the Jewish Founders exhibit, blaming only the Jews for that problematic past, is unacceptable and, whether intentional or not, antisemitic,” said the letter. “We call on the Academy Museum to thoroughly redo this exhibit so that it celebrates the Jewish founders of Hollywood with the same respect and enthusiasm granted to those celebrated throughout the rest of the museum.”

All of this comes as the Museum itself has been under pressure to raise money and attract visitors. The Form 990 tax filing for the Museum shows ballooning expenses not off set by donations. If the Museum is hoping for influx of revenue from the big names in Hollywood, offending the local community doesn’t seem like a good idea.

So what was wrong with the “Hollywoodland” exhibit? According to the signed petition,it began with the use of words including “tyrant,” “oppressive,” “womanizer” and “predator” in its wall text. They called the exhibit “antisemitic” and described it as “the only section of the museum that vilifies those it purports to celebrate.”

I do know that on opening night, many guests left shaking their heads in disbelief. Hollywood is the town built by Fox, Goldwyn, Mayer, Warner, Wasserstein, Zucker, Cohn et al. Much of the history can be found in Neal Gabler’s terrific book, “An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood.” The Museum is now expected to embrace these stories, not denigrate them, and quickly, before that fundraiser in October.

Tony Awards This Sunday Battle Internal, External Forces Including Competition and Exclusion

0

The Tony Awards are coming this Sunday on CBS.

While this has been an excellent season on Broadway, the show — which begins at 8pm — is battling internal and external forces.

Let’s start with external and ratings. HBO is launching the second season of “House of the Dragon” at 9pm, and will repeat it when its over. Is there a cross over audience? Probably. “Dragon” and “Game of Thrones” are hugely popular. The possibility of the Tonys being crushed at least from 9 to 10pm is upsetting.

Then there are the internal issues. The Tony Awards were for years staged at Radio City Musical, where there is plenty of room — 5,000 seats. But union issues have increased the rental price so much that the Tonys had to go looking for a new home last year.

The show wound up at the United Palace Theatre in Washington Heights. The place was cavernous but not modern enough to accommodate anyone comfortably. Audience members in the orchestra section lost weight because it was so hot down there. Access to bathrooms and snacks was incredibly limited. The whole United Palace experience was one best forgotten.

So this year the Tonys are coming from the David Koch Theater in Lincoln Center. Capacity is about half of Radio City’s. All I’ve heard about it for weeks is producers, investors, guests of nominees all fighting for tickets. We may have to watch this from PJ Clarke’s across the plaza!

The party that follows — which used to be at the Plaza Hotel — is in the lobby of David Geffen Hall, formerly Avery Fisher Hall, which is also smaller than the previous venue. Luckily many shows head to their own parties, and that seems the case this Sunday.

There’s one other internal problem: not all the nominated musicals or plays with music will perform on the CBS broadcast. “Stereophonic,” a hybrid, is nominated for Best Play. It’s also nominated for Best Score, as the play –which may win — is loosely based on Fleetwood Mac. It has terrific songs and performers, yet they have not been invited to perform! The “Stereophonic” gang would have driven up ratings.

Will it all get resolved? Of course. And Broadway will close one season and get ready for a new one that also looks very promising.

Does Vanity Fair Hate Ayo Edebiri? You’d Think So From This Month’s Cover

0

Vanity Fair used to be the place every publicist wanted to have the cover of for their clients.

Under Tina Brown, then Graydon Carter, the covers were sensational, beautiful, sometimes provocative.

But since Radhika Jones took over, ‘ugly’ has been the main description. Month after month, celebrities on the cover of Vanity Fair look like they’re in pain.

That’s certainly the case this month for Ayo Edebiri, star of “The Bear.” Could they have made her look any worse? Renell Medrano, the photographer, is certainly no Annie Leibovitz, or Jonathan Becker.

I’ve met Edebiri many times since “The Bear”
exploded into a crossover hit. On the show, her character, the ingenious Sydney, is as clever and cute as she could be, even when the marinade is turning bad. In person, I actually told her recently, You’ve become too glamorous! (Sydney is not this glam! She laughed.) Ayo Edebiri s a talented, smart, beautiful young woman.

So why does Vanity Fair make her look so awful? Ayo is slouched back from the camera in a huge pink chair, wearing a bland colored pink hoodie — an expensive one, no doubt, that becomes the main feature of her portrait. Her face is hidden and she looks nothing like Ayo Edibiri. She looks unhappy, or scared, and I can tell you why: she knows this is wrong.

There’s more of this inside the magazine. For some reason, the editors didn’t want to use color photos of Ayo. Everything is washed out. The only decent picture is on Page 46. It’s in stunning color. The actress looks like herself. There’s real expression. You might see that on a newsstand and recognize her. God forbid.

One more problem with the Vanity Fair cover. The cut line is not helpful. Under Ayo’s name, the cut says: “Wins At All.” Wins what. What are you talking about? There is no reference to “The Bear.” Nothing, nada. Are we playing a game here? It should have read something like “Ayo Edebiri: Bearing Up” or “Cooking with Gas on The Bear,” or above her name “The Bear’s”, and below her name, “Chef’s Kiss.”

Everyone I know talks about how Vanity Fair is no longer an important read. It’s an Oscar party. Otherwise, the magazine has none of the resonance of its halcyon days. I know Jones wants people of color on the cover — which is great, wonderful — but use a bright palette against seamless white like they do for white stars. Make the covers snap, shine, and be witty— Ayo could have had some unusual kitchen tool in her hand. They did this to Simone Biles, too. That cover was horrendous, too.

Miscellaneous VF rant: Glenn Powell on the inside for Hit Man? Huh? Jean Smart relegated to the back page? (Isn’t this the TV issue?) And the magazine is only 106 pages. Very disappointing.

PS Simone Biles, from February. Believe me, Nicole Kidman or Penelope Cruz would not be presented this way.

Television Critics Snub Colbert, Nominate Only One Male Performer (Jeremy Allen White) in Comedy

0

The TCA’s– Television Critics Awards– have snubbed Stephen Colbert for their annual nominations. Colbert wins Emmys, is always nominated for everything, and is often the ratings leader of late night.

Weird. Colbert suffered from the TCAs pitting specials and weekly shows against the nightly shows. Big mistake.

They also chose five women of the six nominees for acting in comedy. These are gender free nominations, which cuts the opportunities in half. Only Jeremy Allen White was nominated in comedy for “The Bear,” a show that is not a comedy.

Go figure.

The big winners were FX and Netflix, with 16 noms each. HBO was third with 13.

Naomi Watts, Billy Crudup Had Their 2nd Wedding in Mexico– Just Like I Said They Would

Congrats to two of our best actors and nicest people.

Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup had their official wedding in Mexico this weekend. I told you they would back on May 15th.

Naomi’s brother, Ben Watts, the photographer, posted some videos and pics to his Instagram page. The bride and groom are glowing.

Who went besides family? Justin Theroux is in Ben’s photos. But I’m sure there were plenty more actor friends.

Kristi Noem’s Book Drops off Amazon Top 10,000 as She Welcomes Nazis to State Capital

0

A little over a month since it was released, Kristi Noem’s book is deader than dead.

In “No Going Back,” Noem admitted to killing her dog because he misbehaved. She also lied about meeting North Korean dictator Kim Jung Un.

The book has dropped off the amazon top 10,000 — that’s ten thousand — as no one bought it. Also MAGA is so illiterate I don’t know why publishers print books for them.

Anyway.

Turns out yesterday Noem welcomed the Nazi party to the state capital in Pierre. They really decorated the building, too, and came in costume. Noem said on Twitter X that she was against Nazis, but they clearly felt comfortable visiting her at home.

JFK Grandson Jack Schlossberg Back to Normal After Weeks of Weird Videos

Maybe Jack Schlossberg is schizophrenic. Or has multiple personality syndrome.

In any case, he’s back to normal on social media. After a run of weird videos, Jack has put on clothes, combed his hair, and posted a video for the JFK Library Profiles in Courage awards.

This is in stark contrast to his numerous posts from surfing in Hawaii, where he appeared shirtless, or in shorts and a t shirt, using different accents and attacking his cousin, Robert Kennedy Jr., or just taking the piss, as the Brits might say.

Did Jack’s mother, Caroline Kennedy, pull the plug on the mania? he boy was not acting like a Kennedy, that’s for sure. Will this new chapter last, or will the Presidential Grandson — who seems vastly unemployed — revert to slacker fun?

Little Steven van Zandt Praises Knockout HBO Doc About His Extraordinary Life: “More coherent than the way I lived it”

EXCLUSIVE Fans of Little Steven van Zandt, Bruce Springsteen, the E Street Band, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes got a real treat Saturday night at the Tribeca Film Festival. We got to see the first screening ever of “Stevie van Zandt: Disciple,” a nearly three hour documentary which will debut on HBO June 22nd.

We weren’t the only ones to see “Disciple” for the first time. It was also the first time for Little Steven to sit in an audience and watch Bill Teck’s sensational film. On stage afterwards, the self-effacing van Zandt said of the film’s take on his wild life, “It was pretty coherent, more coherent than the way I lived it!” (He also joked, “I wanted to see you tell how I lived my life.”)

Despite its length, “Disciple” moves fast and tells the comprehensive life arc of Bruce Springsteen’s self described consigliere, the leader of the E Street Band famous for his gypsy wardrobe and searing guitar, his run as Silvio Dante on “The Sopranos,” as a political activist, educator, and rock philosopher.

The audience was pretty starry down at the Tribeca Fest and later at Drew Nieporent‘s still delicious Tribeca Grill, with the great Jackson Browne, Ruben Blades, Luba Mason, Michael des Barres, former Senator Bill Bradley, rock legends Darlene Love, Eddie Brigati of the Rascals (with wife Susan), and Gary US Bonds, plus Springsteen manager Jon Landau, Soprano Vinny Pastore, record producer Russ Titelman, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos, newsman Brian Williams, director Thom Zimny, and Steve’s popular, talented, beautiful wife, Maureen van Zandt.

If you’re a fan — and who isn’t? — “Disciple” is a well crafted gift that tells van Zandt’s story as it ebbs and flows with Springsteen’s, how the rocker became part of the “Sopranos” cast and later star of his own Netflix series, “Lillyhammer.” There’s also the fabled saga of how van Zandt became socially aware on many subjects, particularly how he led the way to get musicians not to play Sun City in South Africa until apartheid was toppled. Nelson Mandela makes an appearance.

Director Teck managed to get his hands on lost archival film never shown before including unseen footage of Springsteen, “Southside” Johnny Lyon, and Little Steven playing together years ago. (Apparently there’s a whole concert of this stuff in Bruce’s archives.) What Teck captures through the film is van Zandt’s unending passion for rock and roll and R&B, whether in performance or just in conversation starting from his earliest days.

There are plenty of interviews conducted over the last few years including Springsteen, Paul McCartney, director Chris Columbus, “Sopranos” creator David Chase, musician Jesse Malin, Bono, rocker Palmyra Delran, most of last night’s guests, van Zandt’s brother and sister, and several other characters from van Zandt’s world. We even get to meet his first manager, a lovely now-94 year old named Big Mama McEvilly.

All these famous people are great, but it’s because van Zandt — who is such a charming and endearing storyteller — that we care about “Disciple.” Just as much a genuine product of New Jersey as Springsteen, van Zandt — who is Italian despite the last name — tells it like it is. He just narrowly avoids saying fuhgedaboutit. But you know he’s thinking it. He’s actually an erudite artist as well as a gifted musician. He also has incredible amount of optimism. Even through dark times, he managed to pull himself up by the boot straps. We’re certainly glad he did.

PS Van Zandt and Landau head back to Europe today, Sunday, to join up with the Springsteen tour when it resumes this week in Madrid.

Circle the whole night of June 22nd for a not to be missed event.

Here’s a bit of the Q&A that followed the screening.

Slapshot! Big Saturday Night Propels Will Smith’s “Bad Boys” to $56 Million Weekend

Will Smith triumphed this weekend, overcoming the stigma of his famous Oscar slap.

Will’s “Bad Boys Ride or Die” scored a whopping $56 million from early shows on Wednesday through today. This is a lot more than expected. A big walk up audience on Saturday carried the weekend. Advanced ticket sales didn’t indicate that would happen.

Smith was persona non grata after his March 2022 live Oscar incident in which he slapped — really punched — Chris Rock on stage. And then cursed him out. After that Smith was banned by the Academy and lost a bunch of jobs.

But time heals all wounds, and at least for Will Smith’s fans, that wound. It helped that the movie got high marks from anyone who saw it. The fun of seeing Smith and Martin Lawrence together again after 20 years overcame whatever shade was thrown.

What does it mean? Will Smith is back, and there will be another “Bad Boys” movie. Never ever bet against producer Jerry Bruckheimer, too. He knows what he’s doing more than almost anyone else!
