The Hollywood Foreign Press dealt some blows to several movies this morning.
The biggest disaster is “Cats,” from Universal Pictures. With an all star cast and huge budget, “Cats” would have been the toast of the Globes in past years. The HFPA screened it and gave it one nod, for the new song by Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Otherwise, “Cats” didn’t make Best Comedy/Musical even though it was technically the only musical of the year. This movie will now have to survive on its following among the zillion people who saw it live on stage. Most of those were Japanese tourists, however.
Universal’s “Ford v Ferrari” was also ignored except for Christian Bale’s performance. Luckily the film is already a $100 million hit. But a few noms wou;d have been nice.
Warner Bros. struck out with Clint Eastwood’s excellent “Richard Jewell,” and the important civil rights movie, “Just Mercy.” One nod for the former, nothing for the latter.
Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” and Marielle Heller’s “Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” each from Sony Columbia, struck out too. Only Tom Hanks made it in from the latter. “Little Women” has a Best Actress nod and nothing else. Very surprising and wrong.
“Bombshell” about Roger Ailes and Fox News got nothing except a nod for Charlize Theron. It’s out of the game.
