Up until now, I’ve paid no attention to a movie called “Klara and the Sun.” (The only press release I received for it was a 4pm screening last Monday. Daytime screenings are difficult if you’re, um, working.)
But now things have changed.
The movie, directed by Taika Waititi, is sitting in 800 theaters with dust balls rolling down the aisles. Since last week, it’s made $1 million from all those showings.
Waititi is best known for the antisemitic “Jojo Rabbit.” He’s joined here by actress Jenna Ortega, whose main work in “Wednesdays” on TV and being anti-Israel. So you can imagine the clamoring for this film. Critics don’t like either, giving it a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Word comes now that “Klara,” which features our beloved six time Oscar nominee Amy Adams, is getting pulled from its international release plan by Sony Pictures.
This would be Sony’s second box office disaster, after “The Social Reckoning,” also this month.
All summer, Sony rode the box office with “Spider Man: Brand New Day,” taking in $2 billion worldwide.
But these two films don’t have Peter Parker, or anyone swinging around in the city stopping crime.
You can still catch “Klara” in those 880 theaters, probably once a day, until Sony yanks it next Thursday. But apart from a “Resident Evil” movie this fall, Sony’s enormous gains in 2026 are being erased even as we speak. Such is the roller coaster world of movies. Sony has one more shot this year, with a “Jumanji” movie.
