You Can See Everything — Except Chris Rock’s “Misty Green,” Rescued by Netflix After A24 Dumped It for Other Projects

A24 Studios is very busy right now.

They’re juggling “You Can See Everything,” which is a phenomenon, and “Prime Time,” and anticipating “The Debut.”

So who had time for Chris Rock’s “Misty Green”? Not A24. Even though the New York Times, the New Yorker, Variety and other big outlets gave the film positive reviews, there was dead silence around the opening.

I haven’t seen “Misty Green” yet but I wrote hopeful things about it. Star Rosalind Eleazar looked a like a winner. I had high expectations for her and the film considering Chris Rock’s last one, “Top Five,” was so good.

But “Misty Green” never had a chance. After 10 days, it’s made $141,126. That’s it. For the first week it was in six theaters. Since then, 125. By Friday, it will be out of theaters. “Misty Green” was ignored, and dumped. And now it’s dead.

Good news: Netflix has stepped in. They will start streaming it on November 7th. This might be because Peter Rice, one of its producers, has just been named Chief Content Officer. Rice has excellent taste. He can see that “Misty Green” could be revived. So could its awards chances, since it’s played in theaters.

So let’s start over. Maybe Netflix will do the PR and marketing A24 shrugged off. From what I’m told Eleazar has a shot at Best Actress slots with various awards groups. Maybe I’ll even get to see it! But it’s too bad A24 didn’t think it was worthy of attention.
