It’s sad to say, but now it’s time for the Clive Davis estate auction of his art collection.
Davis left us in June at age 94, unbelievable to his friends who miss him dearly.
Christie’s is making the collection the centerpiece of its November auctions, and valued it at $35 million.
Among the artists involved aew Jean -Michel Basquiat, Fernando Botero, Jean Dubuffet, David Hockney, Hans Hofmann, Alex Katz, Joan Mitchell, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, and more.
There’s a Warhol portrait of Aretha Franklin which will start the bidding at $2 million. It was also used as an album cover for Aretha. It hung in a prominent spot in Clive’s entry way he loved it so much.
Of course maybe the greatest painting is not in the collection. That’s David Hockney’s portrait of Davis that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.
