The big box office winner this weekend?

“Godzilla Minus Zero” swept through with $31.6 million.

The monster crushed everything its path, leaving just a little room for “The Cat in the Hat,” giving Warner Bros. a needed boost. Dr. Seuss’s classic story drummed up $20.5 million, restoring our faith in the fundamentals.

“You Can See Everything” is now revving up for $100 million, a record in either fact or fiction. Now up to almost $80 million with no sign of flagging. Also, there are more parodies and memes than ever. There was one on “SNL” last night. They’re all over social media. The Oscars next March will undoubtedly begin with one.

Elsewhere, new movies hoping for Oscar attention are all starting to arrive in theaters. “Wild Horse Nine,” “I Play Rocky,” “Fjord,” “Fatherland,” “Once Upon a Time in Harlem” are all looking for audiences. “Wild Horse Nine” came out of the gate strong on Friday night, but lost speed Saturday and Sunday. Awards time will save it. “Rocky” is a novelty picture. We’ll see how it goes.

Tonight is the Critics Choice Documentary Awards on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and criticschoice.com at 7pm. I’m so glad it’s streaming because it’s one of the best produced awards shows of the season.

Last night I watched Mike Leigh’s “Tender Loving Care,” remarkably moving and funny, opening December 4th. Marion Bailey deserves a Best Supporting Actress nomination, Picture and original screenplay nominations. Baily is Mike Leigh’s partner. I loved her in “Vera Drake.’ The whole movie is A plus. You sit there thinking, I adore these people are great. What a pleasure.

Showbiz411 is now in its 13th year of providing breaking and exclusive entertainment news. This is an independent site, unlike the many Hollywood trades that are owned by one company. To continue providing news that takes a fresh look at what's going on in movies, music, theater, etc, advertising is our basis. Reader donations would be greatly appreciated, too. They are just another facet of keeping fact based journalism alive.
