Tom Cruise has made a lot of great movies. Recently, I really liked both “American Made” and “Edge of Tomorrow” among his non franchise movies.
But with “Digger,” opening October 2nd, things don’t look so good.
Social media reactions, which arrived yesterday, were definitely split. Actual reviewers and journalists didn’t like it much. Influencers raved about it.
For some reason, the words “bold swing” turned up in a lot of the sentiments. Great minds think alike? Or were they fed some ideas? Influencers have become the fluffers of the movie business lately.
The result of the real reactions hasn’t been positive for “Digger”‘s Oscar predictions. GoldDerby.com has dropped “Digger” to number 8 on its list, and that number is falling. It seems unlikely that “Digger” could make the Oscar cut off, and if it does, it will be at the bottom of the list.
So what happens with Tom Cruise? GoldDerby has him at number 3, but that may be optimistic unless Academy members feel sorry for him. He has no shot at beating Matt Damon from “The Odyssey” and John Malkovich from “Wild Horse Nine.” There are others on the list, also, with better chances including Ryan Gosling, if he campaigns, and Robert Pattinson. Brad Pitt is also a question mark since his “Heart of the Beast” has gained a lot of traction, and he still has “Mis-adventures of Cliff Booth.” It’s a good season for Brad Pitt.
Where “Digger” should fare well is in the below the line artisans. Cinematography, editing, and production design are all top notch. Expect nominations in those categories.
