Broadway: In the Bizarro World, “The Great Gatsby” — No Tony’s — Gets 11 Audience Nominations, But “Suffs” and “Doubt” are Out

In the world of the Tony Awards, musicals like “The Great Gatsby,” “The Notebook,” and “Back to the Future” are considered, well, “bad,” and get no nominations.

But in Broadway.com’s Audience Award world, they are hits!

Almost all of the nominees for the Audience Awards were panned by critics, ignored by other awards groups, or taken seriously. But somehow they’ve all sprung back to life with this group. I hope all the nominees got expensive gift baskets.

Even “The Wiz” pulled off two noms, for Wayne Brady and Deborah Cox. “Lempicka,” which just posted a closing notice, got some love, too.

The Audience Awards love Big Stars! Four of the five leading men in a play got no Tony nominations. Serious work like “Suffs” and “Doubt” received one nom each. Of course!

Isn’t it nice? Everyone gets something.
