Ryan Gosling “The Fall Guy” Debuts with Underwhelming $3 Mil in Previews, Aims at Low Weekend

“The Fall Guy” opened last night in previews to underwhelming numbers.

The Ryan Gosling- Emily Blunt action comedy certainly has had strong promotion. But the numbers from last night and Wednesday showings came to just $3.1 million.

The weekend take looks low — around $35 million — unless word of mouth kicks in. Reviews are good with 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. But it’s unclear how that will translate at the box office.

“The Fall Guy” is a reminder of the malaise right now across the business. A new “Planet of the Apes” movie comes next week, followed by the new “Mad Max Furiosa.”

But Memorial Day weekend looks like it’s going to be a snooze, and the summer doesn’t seem promising. There should be worry now about the fall and Oscar movies. Unless there’s a surprise coming, “Dune Two” is in the lead right now. There’s no “Oppenheimer” or “Barbie” event film apparent on the path.
