There will be a three year break between the end of “Star Wars” and the beginning of a new “Star Wars.”
So says Disney and Lucas Films in a list of dated releases that includes three “Star Wars” movies following the end of the Skywalker saga that began in 1977. Disney and Fox have also released prospective dates for “Avatar” movies, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one. James Cameron has been talking about sequels for years.
They’ve also moved James Gray’s “Ad Astra” with Brad Pitt to September. Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” will come in 18 months. Channing Tatum’s “Gambit” has been removed, it looks like, for good. Marvel has one “X Men” movie set for next spring called “New Mutants,” but nothing else is on this docket.
The “Star Wars” movies could be Rian Johnson’s trilogy–he’s working on one. The guys from “Game of Thrones” are, too, but theirs might be all medieval. (You can see Emilia Clarke as a “Star Wars” heroine, cantcha?)
Anyway, “Star Wars” will go on in some way, in 2022, 2024, and 2026. That will bring us to the 50th anniversary of George Lucas’s vision. OMG.
