Home Celebrity Mickey Rooney: Michael Jackson Used to Sing to Me Over the Phone

Mickey Rooney called me on Monday night with his talented wife, Jan. I was thrilled to hear from them. I told them I was worried this year because I hadn’t seen them at the Oscars. Our meetings on the red carpet are a tradition.

“We were there!” Mickey and Jan said in unison. “We missed you, too!” They’ve been touring, doing their musical sketch show everywhere.

Do you understand that Mickey will turn 90 in September? He is the elder statesman of Hollywood. When Mickey was a kid, he was Justins Bieber and Timberlake, Michael J. Fox, and a little David Spade all rolled into one. He was Warren Beatty before there was Warren Beatty. I mean, the boy got around!

So Mickey wanted me to tell everyone that at Saturday’s Michael Jackson event at the Bev Hilton, it was his devoted Jan who knocked everyone out. “I just introduced her. She sang “You Are Not Alone,” Michael’s song, and Charlie Chaplin‘s “Smile.”

Jan said: “You know, Michael used to call us up and sing with us on the phone.” She got a little teary. “His death is such a tragedy.”

The Rooneys are busy, busy. They were recently guests at an intimate dinner thrown for them by Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw. The other guests were J.J. Abrams and his wife, Katie.

In the last week, they were also part of a surprise birthday for 50s bombshell and Howard Hughes hottie Jane Russell. The other guests included Esther Williams and Debbie Reynolds. According to the imdb.com, Russell just turned 89 on June 21st. God bless them all, having surprise parties! How cool is that?

Here’s Mickey as Andy Hardy with Judy Garland. There’s nothing like it:

  1. Michael Jackson was a nice person. The media want to say what a wacko jacko he was, but he was a special human being. Who will be miss greatly. Miss you MJ.

  2. I met Jan and Mickey in 2001. They were so cordial. I fell in love with them. When I was watching the show – I met so many nice people. This all took place in MN. Jan was so sweet to me after the show. And I can tell you one thing about their show – Mickey is as spunky as he always was…and Jan is so beautiful and has this voice that you can close your eyes and just fall in love with her voice and it floats you away. I love Judy Garland too. I am so sorry for their loss of Judy. And I am so sorry for their loss of Michael Jackson who used to sing to them over the phone. I can’t really get to know Mickey and Jan in real life – but some day in heaven. I am going to introduce them to my grandma and spend a day or two with them. Its a date – Right Jan and Mickey?? I love you guys. And I love Jessie Heuer who runs your fan club. God Blessed us all with Jessie and what she has done with the Mickey Rooney Fan club. And Mickey is a wonderful actor and singer and musician. He has done wonderful things with his life. And Jan is just amazing. I adore them. God Bless everyone!!! My favorite movie of Mickey’s is “Boys Town”…but I love any movie he is in like the Andy Hardy ones with Judy. <3 them!

I found this article through Jan and Mick’s page on the net… Great article. So nice hearing what everyone’s been up to. So thank you for that. No surprise that they shared a love for Michael Jackson. And what an awesome thing to have them there at the memorial I’m sure it was quite touching.

Jan and Mickey are just exactly how you described…Mickey is the elder statesman of Hollywood and his wife Jan the darling damsel at ever at his side. I love them both.
