Box Office Boffo: “Captain Marvel” Crosses $500 Mil Monday, But “Captive State,” “Wonder Park” Disappoint Fans, Investors

Today, “Captain Marvel” will finish out Sunday with $496 million. This means tomorrow is $500 million day. Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson added $68 million in their second weekend. It’s quite an accomplishment. “Captain Marvel” is the future of Disney-Marvel now, as she will also make an appearance in “Avengers: Endgame.”

The rest of the box office is dismal. “Captive State,” a movie no one knew about with John Goodman, was DOA as predicted. Apparently it’s not even rated. Is that possible? They made $3.9 million. Why even release it? Just so people who couldn’t get into “Captain Marvel” had a place to go in the cineplex?

And “Wonder Park” was less than animated but very cartoon like with $16 million. It cost over $100 million.

M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” is ending a nine week run with $110 million, most of it made in the first two weeks. I doubt anyone remembers that it was released. It came, it went. Bruce Willis hardly spoke in it, and was filmed oddly. Still, it was a Samuel L. Jackson film. He’s the theme of the box office this run.

Jordan Peele’s “Us” starts previews Thursday night, opens Friday and will be a BLOCKBUSTER.
