Emmy Nominations: Netflix “House of Cards” Scores a First for Non Network, Non Cable Show

Share

The big news out of the Emmy nominations this morning: “House of Cards,” shown on Netflix, not a network or even a cable outlet, is nominated for Best Drama. Its stars, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, are also nominated. Netflix is a video service you get from subscribing to the web having a box attached to your TV (or included in your TV if it’s Smart.) That changes everything, doesn’t it? Now the broadcast networks have not just cable to worry about.

All of the drama series this year came from cable or Netflix, none from ABC, CBS, NBC, or Fox. Even “The Good Wife” didn’t make it. One nice nomination: for USA’s “Political Animals,” a limited run show from last summer. HBO’s The Newsroom got several noms but not Best Drama.

Jane Fonda, a two time Oscar winner and multiple Oscar nominee, received her first Emmy nomination in about 30 years for playing Leona Lansing. (Her last was for “The Dollmaker.”)

Not nominated” any of the supporting actors from “Mad Men” starting with John Slattery. Only Robert Morse got in, as a Guest Star. Slattery was robbed! Elizabeth Moss and Christina Hendicks were each nominated, however.

Also snubbed: The Office, ending its run, got just a writing nod for the finale.

Some multiple nominees: Bobby Cannavale, Elizabeth Moss.

And movie stars galore: Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, and Al Pacino are all up for Best Actor in a Mini Series or Movie. Laura Linney, Sigourney Weaver, Jessica Lange and Helen Mirren are all up for Best Actress in in a Mini Series or Movie.
