Home Celebrity Beyonce Super Bowl Half Time Show: Swagger But Not Much Singing (Full...

Beyonce put on a good show of pyrotechnics and dancing, but I wouldn’t say there was much actual singing as we used to know it. She has two good songs–“Crazy in Love”–  which is really just a repurposed song by the late great Eugene Record of the Chi Lites–and “Single Ladies.” Another song, “Halo” consists mostly of Bey belting out the word “Halo.”  It was neither terrible nor great. One big problem is that Beyonce doesn’t have much of a catalog to pull from. She just has a great swagger, and no one struts lie her, and that may be all you need these days. Anyway, she sang live and that’s all that matters at this point. No lip synching all night. But the 49ers maybe should have lip synched the first half.

Update: The Ravens just scored again. If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to bring some flowers to their grave…Jeesh…

And quoth the Ravens: Never more, never more.

  1. Let’s face it, she doesn’t have any real vocal talent, she is waaaay overrated and I don’t get it at all – I thought she was awful and people at work thought her outfits were not ‘family’ friendly, shall we say.

  2. I love her, but I concur … it was like a club show; all lights and dancing … she’s a talent, but she needs someone like an Alicia Keys to pen her some songs … but, she is easy on the eyes …

  3. Don’t get the hype with this woman, she’s sexy and a good mover but the show was all about lights and fireworks any of the pop stars could have done a good job of this. She doesn’t have the star quality she claims to have… she’s no MJ, Prince, Tina Turner etc….. She just has a great marketing team.

^^ This is true. But what artist today has a large catalog? Some of the best songwriters are dead (Marvin Hamlisch) and even popular songs are being diluted with rappers interrupting the flow of the song. Interesting that the best selling song of the past 2-3 months has been “Home” by Phillips2. Home is a “standard” song and will be played over and over. I don’t think too many people will be singing/playing “Ray of Light” or some of the other songs being released.

  5. (Roger, you should allow freedom of speech on your site). I didn’t see what was wrong with the performance. I’m kind of tired of this “contest” at Superbowl time – who was the best who was the worst? It’s free TV entertainment, why do we get to vote?
My next thoughts were she was very entertaining, and I don’t think Beyonce is on anyone’s list of “best singers” just as Madonna and Gaga aren’t on that list. I mean, these ladies are NOT Celine, Barbara or Aretha, they don’t have powerhouse voices. They are more performance artist. Beyonce is very good at marketing herself (like Madonna) and she’s very versatile and she’s got a long long career ahead of her.

  6. Pretty much any pop artist who expects to sell records post-Michael Jackson has to be able to give as much of a visual performance (high energy dance/special effects) as a musical/audio performance. I’d definitely say Beyonce did that.

The days when artists could perform at an event like the Super Bowl and just stand flat-footed and sing or play guitar and sing (half out-of-key) are long gone. MTV, and later YouTube, killed them dead. Audiences essentially want to see music videos brought to life.

  7. I think Beyonce’s half-time show was fabulous…and I really enjoyed the Destiny’s Child reunion (even though it was too brief)….but it wasn’t the all-time best, that still belongs in my opinion to Prince in 2007, and Michael Jackson in 1993 in terms of showmanship and spectacle. Out of 10 I give Beyonce an solid 7. Looking forward to her new album.

  9. Roger, I kind of agree with you. Her material needs to be better, but I consider her more of a Performance ARTIST than a really good singer. I mean she can’t touch Jennifer Hudson, Aretha, Celine, some of the great powerhouse voices and she knows it. So she puts on a GREAT SHOW! And if you go to some of these concerts, they have a lot of pyrotechnics and splashing lights. The bands just stand there and there’s a light show behind them.
Nothing like OLD SCHOOL, some of the BEST singers are the old school groups and singers (Gladys, the Temptations, Charlie Wilson). Because they have a large catalog of songs and hit songs.
Now back to Beyonce, she has a lot of songs, but they’re forgettable. But let’s say that about a lot of these newer younger singers.

  10. The show was awful the entrance was uninspiring, She sang way less than she danced. The sound was terrible and im a fan of hers.It was like a really bad stripper review. The breaks in between songs made it feel uneven and unpolished. Like Madonna or not she raised the bar in production and showmanship at twice her age and this ended with a merciful thump.

What do you think?
